Abstract

Indonesia faces decreasing in its number during period of 2018-2019 according to SINTA (Indonesian scientific indexing) database. This situation is alarming amid country’s effort to improve its research and development from which the scientific publication has been used as a measure. This article presents a dataset of bibliometric from all Indonesian institutions (424 institutions as of January 2020) indexed by Scopus database. We collected data on documents per year and document type. Different from other datasets, this article presents longitudinal data from 2014-2019, in which during this period dramatic change occurs from steep rise, exponential, and degradation during 2018-2019. We analyzed publication number from leading institutions at different points in time and compared document types (i.e., number of journal article and conference paper, in which both types are the driving force of Indonesia’s growing scientific publication number). Since this dataset covers all country’s institutions, it is potential for reuse by policy makers in research and development, researchers from each institution, as well as other stakeholders.

Abstract

The study of a thin-walled column structure has gained much attention due to its potential in many engineering applications, such as the crash box of a car. A thin-walled square column usually exhibits high initial peak force, which may become very dangerous to the driver or passenger. To address this issue, introducing some shape patterns, e.g., origami folding pattern, to the column may become a solution. The present work investigates the compressive properties and behavior of a square box column structure which adopts the Miura origami folding pattern. Several test pieces of single-cell Miura origami column with varying folding angle and layer height are fabricated by a 3D printer. The filament is made of Polylactic Acid (PLA), which is a brittle material. Then, compression tests are carried out to understand its compressive mechanical properties and behavior. The results show that introducing a Miura origami pattern to form a thin-walled square column can dramatically lower down the initial peak stress by 96.82% and, at the same time, increase its ductility, which eventually improves the energy absorption capacity by 61.68% despite the brittle fracture behavior.

Abstract

Nowadays, motorcycle is considered as one of the most practical transportation mode in Indonesia. It has become a common practice that a motorcycle rider often brings a small child using a child seat while riding. However, the used child seat is usually not safe and can easily fall off from the motorcycle due to the lack of safety consideration. Moreover, it is very risky to ride a motorcycle with a small child, knowing that motorcycles are the highest contributor to road traffic accidents. For this reason, this paper proposes a primary design idea of a foldable child safety-seat that can be placed on the front part of a scooter motorcycle. This design is also completed with strength analysis to evaluate the components’ safety for children under five years old with a weight of around 50 kg. The strength calculation of the frame is done by a theoretical approach under static and dynamic loading. According to the analysis, the proposed child seat design could provide a factor of safety of more than 3.6 for static loading and 1.6 for dynamic loading. This study is expected to be used as a reference for developing a more reliable child safety- seat for motorcycle rider in Indonesia.

Abstract

With the growing rate of the COVID-19 case that has not decreased significantly, healthcare workers are required to work extra both in the hospital and for the corpses' funeral process. Since the corpse condition is different from a normal corpse, the treatment must also be different. The objective of this paper is to propose a portable device as an education tool that can ease the burial process of COVID-19 corpse. This device can be operated by only two people, and the load is bearable because there is a worm gear system that helps the pulley system. Other supporting features will be explained in this paper. Theoretical strength analyses are conducted under static and fatigue loading. From the static case, based on the Maximum Shear Stress failure criterion, the safety factors on the critical parts are 1.28 and 5.67. Then, fatigue strength analysis is conducted to provide life prediction for this device. As a result, the fatigue safety factors are found to be greater than 1. These findings indicate that the proposed design is appropriate for real-world use and can be further studied for manufacturing.

Abstract

The increasing number of deaths due to COVID-19 followed by an excessive number of burials had risen the emergence of a safety plan, supporting the burial process to minimize the dangerous impact on the human. The conventional way of burying the corpse with infectious disease in Indonesia utilizes ropes to lower the coffin and involves four to eight people. However, this is not practical because it is energy-wasting and crowding. This paper aims to propose a design of a safe, practical, and robust coffin lowering machine. The proposed design is available for all ages with a weight of up to 200 kg. The design has a 2000 x 600 x 750 mm dimension, in which the width can be extended from 600 to 1000 mm. The straps for lowering the coffin are mounted on the left and right-side shafts. Each of the components is connected with a pin joint. Then, the components are analyzed by calculating the static and fatigue strength to obtain the safety factor and to determine the service life. As a result, the proposed design demonstrates the safety factors for static and fatigue condition that are higher than one, indicating it can be considered for fabrication. In addition, the presented work can be referred as a problem-based learning case study in Machine Element Course.

Abstract

In Indonesia, floods become an annual disaster, especially in the rainy season. The number of floods occurs in Indonesia in 2019 reached 1,277 cases. The floodwater can cause massive damage to the home appliance, especially when contacted with electronic devices. Moreover, the lifting machine comes as an excellent solution, securing the electronic device when floods come. A preliminary design of a hydraulic scissors lifter for elevating the home appliance during floods is introduced along with its static and fatigue strength analyses. The proposed design comes up with a combination of scissors lifter mechanism combined with the hydraulic jack device. The analyses in the critical components of the lifting machine - the support link and the scissors rod link - are presented. The lowest and upper conditions are assumed and resulted in a dynamic safety factor of 1.252 for the lowest position and 3.11 for the highest position. These values indicate that the proposed design offers excellent safety. Additionally, this work can be classified as teaching material for the machine element course.

Abstract

The problem considered in this work is formation control for non-identical linear multi-agent systems (MASs) under a time-varying communication network. The size of the formation is scalable via a scaling factor determined by a leader agent. Past works on scalable formation are limited to identical agents under a fixed communication network. In addition, the formation scaling variable is updated under a leader-follower network. Differently, this work considers a leaderless undirected network in addition to a leader-follower network to update the formation scaling variable. The control law to achieve scalable formation is based on the internal model principle and consensus algorithm. A biased reference output, updated in a distributed manner, is introduced such that each agent tracks a different reference output. Numerical examples show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract

Almost every year, floods disaster becomes the scourge of many countries in the world, including Indonesia.  When the flood comes and submerges the houses, every item and household furniture in it will also be submerged in flood water. Furniture that is heavy and difficult to move, especially electronic equipment such as refrigerators, may be left by the owner when a flood occurs. To prevent the furniture from submerging, a lifting kit is needed. For this reason, the purpose of this work is to design a mechanical tool/kit that can lift or elevate the electronic furniture such as refrigerator to a higher position and avoid the damage caused by flood. The kit is expected to be able to cover a 100 x 80 cm base of the refrigerator with maximum load of 200 kg. The elevation of the lifting kit is set to be higher than 50 cm. Calculation for the stress and fatigue analysis is also performed to determine the strength of the structure. As a result, the obtained safety factors for the critical components under static and fatigue loading conditions show values of more than one, indicating the product is safe for real operation. In addition, the required torque to produce the elevation is also calculated and discussed.

Abstract

This paper discusses the methodology of design and analysis of a child seat for motorcycles. After realizing the dangers of an unrestrained child in motorcycles, this seat offers a solution to the problem. The seat features sliding beams that allow the user to access the under-seat compartment of the motorcycle and the fuel tank, without requiring any disassembly of the child seat. The dimensions are measured and considered when designing in a graphical application. Once the assembly drawing is completed, the seat is analyzed to identify critical parts of the seat to ensure failure does not occur. It is concluded that our design can withstand static loading but is predicted to fail due to fatigue after 81× 103 cycles under the assumption of accelerating from 0 to 50 km/h in 5 seconds. However, since that is not deemed to be fully optimized due to having a finite life, the material and dimensions are changed so that an infinite life can be predicted.
