Abstract

This article analyzes the story of aṣḥāb al-fīl in Tafsīr Al-Munīr with Emilio Betti's hermeneutics. Meanwhile, in essence, the Al-Qur'an itself contains various kinds of miracles which contain various unseen information and of course the story of the past aṣḥāb al-fīl, cannot be represented and stated rationally sense. The research method in this article uses descriptive analysis obtained through library research, with relevant and reliable sources, such as books, journals, theses, dissertations, and so on. Before obtaining a detailed understanding of Emilio Betti's analysis of Tafsīr Al-Munīr, the author first describes the biography and theory of Emilio Betti's hermeneutics. This is so implicative, because it is able to produce a reflective reinterpretation to be applied critically and systematically. Based on Emilio Betti's hermeneutical analysis, the story of aṣḥāb al-fīl is interpreted by Wahbah Al-Zuhaili by giving nuances of methodological privilege and uniqueness in understanding the meaning contained in the Al-Qur'an. Because it requires an objective interpretation, in Emilio Betti's analysis, Al-Zuhaili quite meets the requirements of his hermeneutic theory, both looking at his linguistic phenomena, emptying himself of any interest, even penetrating the dimensions of reconstruction by including situations and conditions, in addition to both revealing and showing as an interpreter existential in search of meaning, must be aligned with the intent of the author of the text itself.

Abstract

This paper discusses the use of verses of the Qur'an in the Robo'-Robo' prayer tradition in Selat Remis Village, Teluk Pakedai District, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan. This tradition uses verses of the Qur'an by reading selected surahs in its implementation which is carried out once a year, namely on the last Wednesday of the month of Safar. Therefore, to find out the meaning of the use of the verses of the Qur'an in the Robo'-Robo' prayer tradition is to use the sociological theory of knowledge introduced by Karl Mannheim. The source of the data was obtained from observations and in-depth interviews at the research site. The results of this study are: 1) the objective meaning in the perspective of the Pakedai Bay community, namely preserving tradition as a form of obedience to a cleric named Guru Haji Ismail Mundu by finding manuscripts or hand notes that are used as references in that tradition. 2) expressive meaning in the view of the Pakedai Bay community, namely as a means of repelling reinforcements, avoiding disease, gaining safety, wanting a harmonious household, and after carrying out the tradition feel peace, comfort and tranquility. 3) the documentary meaning of the Robo'-Robo' prayer tradition is the formation of a habit as a forum for togetherness and intimacy for the Pakedai Bay community.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the concept of religious pluralism expressed by Nurcholish Madjid in his renewal ideas and Nurcholish Madjid's interpretation of the verses of the Qur’an about religious pluralism is like. This research is library research is research that makes books that discuss the themes studied as a source of data in research. The object to be studied in this research is Nurcholish Madjid. The results of this study indicate that religious pluralism in the idea of Nurcholish Madjid is a plurality of paths leading to one truth, namely the truth of God. This is based on his belief that the One Truth is only God, so only God cannot be more than one, while the path to God as the One Truth certainly varies, according to human ability to obtain and reason information from the procedures to God. Nurcholish Madjid, interprets religious pluralism from two contexts, namely, First, the Indonesian context and modernity. Second, the context of the meaning of the word al-Islām "an attitude of surrender to God" as a meeting point of semitic religions.

Abstract

This article explains the thoughts of Mahmud Yunus in studying the epistemology of Tafsīr Qur`ān Karīm which is in Indonesian, complete in 30 chapters, to test its truth or to what extent the interpretation can be justified. According to the author, what is interesting to discuss: first, what are the sources used as references Mahmud Yunus in Tafsīr Qur`ān Karīm, secondly, what is the method of Mahmud Yunus in writing his book and thirdly, what is the validity of Mahmud Yunus's interpretation in Tafsīr Qur`ān Karīm. In order to achieve this purpose, this study uses analysis-based library research methods. The results of this study show: that the sources of interpretation referred to by Mahmud Yunus in Tafsīr Qur`ān Karīm include an-naql and al-aql sources, namely the Qur’an, hadith, qaul companions, qaul tabiin, holy books and opinions of scholars, reasoning, Arabic, scientific discoveries or scientific theories, and reality. However, the use of the al-'aql source is more dominant in its interpretation so that it is classified into the interpretation of bi al-ra'yi. Regarding the validity of his interpretation, Mahmud Yunus adheres to the correspondence theory of truth in which his interpretation of the kauniyah verses can be said to be in accordance with reality and scientific facts. Besides that, he also adheres to a pragmatic theory in which he tries so that the product of his interpretation can be an alternative solution for solving socio-religious problems faced by society.

Abstract

The conflict dynamics of revivalist and traditionalist Islamic groups always colorize development of ideological contest of religious live in Indonesia. One of the important episodes of this conflict dynamic occurred in the era of independence. Through this paper, the author is interested in portraying episodes of Islamic Revivalist dynamics in the independence era through the thoughts and works of influential revivalist scholars, namely Ahmad Hassan.  This study aims to reveal the form of mediation of Ahmad Hassan's Islamic renewal in his book of tafsir Al-Furqan. The author uses a descriptive method of analysis with literature study techniques in reviewing the interpretation of Al-Furqan as the main object of research. The results showed that in mediating Ahmad Hassan's Islamic renewal, Kitab tafsir Al-Furqan accommodates and mediates Islamic renewal in two ways, namely formative and substantive ways.  Formative way of mediation is indicated through the form of tafsir Al-Furqan as a literal and meaningful translation of tafsir. Critically, this form of translation aimed to make Al-Furqan accessible for Indonesian people at that time when they haven’t had proper understanding on Arabic literacy so that people could understand and refer to the meaning of the Qur'an directly. This is in line with Ahmad Hassan's renewal though about the Qur'an and hadith as the main sources of muslims. As for the substantive ways of mediation, tafsir Al-Furqan contains and expresses the thoughts of Ahmad Hassan's renewal as a substance in interpreting the verses of the Qur'an.

Abstract

In the era of modernization and in the current era of globalization, there are many demands and responsibilities for teachers, lecturers, professors, and Islamic educational institutions and Islamic research to innovate. Especially the policy makers the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Religion, are required to innovate. In this millennial era, it is necessary to understand the Qur'an as a reference and Islamic literature as an innovation for the benefit of the ummah in all aspects. The method used in this research is qualitative research through literature study and analytical approach. The researcher captures all the literature stored in books on innovation from the Al-Qur'an perspective, innovation from Islamic education perspectives, and journals that are relevant to this paper. The researchers took research samples at schools and Madrasas in Yogyakarta, namely SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta and MA MBS Pleret Yogyakarta with the method of observation and interviews objectively and validation. Data analysis was carried out by content analysis referring to Miles and Huberman's theory. The results of this study found that based on the results of the formal and material object literature, changes in human life cannot be separated from innovation. Innovation is inseparable from something new, creative and adaptive to the times. Educational innovation is an attempt to make changes in order to obtain better results in education. Educational innovation is able to solve various challenges of the times and make education go hand in hand with other aspects of life. Whereas based on the field that innovations in the Qur'an are taught directly in class, if students are given Al-Qur'an material in an innovative way, good teaching, offers interesting discussions, especially the methods used by teachers for the majority of students at the school-madrasah level. underwent significant changes.

Abstract

Lightning is a natural phenomenon that is both beautiful enough to be seen with the eyes and a threatening natural occurrence at the same time. Various sources define lightning as a very fast light containing an electric current that is then delivered to a cloud or the ground. The transmission of electric current when lightning occurs causes a threat to humans, which is one of these lightning threats as studied in the title of this study. The research method used is qualitative research with the study of the library using a case approach. The analysis used in this study is descriptive analysis. The problem raised is how the impact of lightning on the human eye is seen from the perspective of the Qur’an and science. The result or conclusion was found to be that lightning, from the perspective of the Qur'an, has a variety of meanings, with its very bright ability to blind or eliminate sight when seen by the eye. From a scientific standpoint, lightning can cause red eyes and blurred vision. Which, if not handled properly, can result in permanent blindness.

Abstract

The essence of jihad as a doctrine that has an orientation to present the ethical system of a group of people who are awareof the importance of justice is often not created, this cannot be denied because of the stagnation that occurs when reading the Qur'an only prioritizing textuality. This gap gives rise to behaviors that seem anarchic, intolerant, and destructive. Therefore, to encourage a contextual, dynamic and tolerant interpretation of jihadist verses, deradicalization efforts are needed, and one of these efforts is the dissemination of religious literature that supports this spirit. Sufis are one of the groups that formulate interpretations of jihad verses with peaceful meanings. This research tries to raise Ibn ‘Ajībah's interpretation of jihad verses in his book Al-Baḥr Al-Madīd fī Tafsīr Al-Qur`ān Al-Majīd. The author reveals the essence and method of interpreting verses about jihad in Al-Baḥr Al-Madīd fī Tafsīr Al-Qur`ān Al-Majīd, as well as their significance for deradicalization efforts, which means for the understanding of religious texts in Indonesia today. Ibn ‘Ajībah's view of jihad can be summed up in two ways, namely the meaning of peaceful jihad and the meaning of armed jihad. In other words, Ibn ‘Ajībah's reading uses the irfān epistemology, based on the bayān epistemology. The significance of the verses of Jihad in Al-Baḥr Al-Madīd fī Tafsīr Al-Qur`ān Al-Majīd can be seen in terms of its method and content. From a methodological point of view, Ibn ‘Ajībah's interpretation is important because it offers an open, contextual model of meaning. In terms of content, Ibn ‘Ajībah's interpretation of jihad verses shows that jihad is not something revolutionary and radical, its meaning is very important to inform the public that jihad means more than just war and violence.

Abstract

Along with the demands of modern and contemporary times, Muslim thinkers and scientists are starting to try, to respond, and find solutions to the crisis of how religious traditions are still able to relate to modernity and changing times in general. This article discusses one of the approaches used by contemporary scholars in understanding the Qur’an, one of whom is Abdullah Saeed, a professor of Islamic studies in Australia, who initiated the method of contextualizing the Qur’an. In particular, the author tries to explain methodological aspects from Abdullah Saeed’s point of view in contextualizing the Qur'an. To be able to find answers to these problems, the author tries to collect data from various sources, both primary sources, namely from Abdullah Saeed’s writings, and secondary sources, namely writings related to the main focus. To conclude, the writer tries to analyze the data that has been collected using the theory of character studies by analyzing the environment around the characters and the arguments that are built. The author concludes that the contextual interpretation initiated by Abdullah Saeed is a method of interpreting the text of the verses of the Qur’an which is related to the context of life and conditions society to answer various problems experienced by contemporary society today. Apart from that, in his thinking, Abdullah Saeed has the advantage of the double movement method initiated by Fazlur Rahman, namely he can provide systematic and operational steps in contextualizing the Qur’an.

Abstract

This article aims to redefine the word ḍaraba in the Qur'an Surah An-Nisā’ 34. Some interpreters and jurists say that beating a wife is permissible if she leaves her obligations as a wife (nushūz) on the condition that it is in the context of education and does not injure or cause injury. Some other interpreters argue that the meaning of ḍaraba is a metaphor, that is, it does not mean hitting. However, this problem does not just end because the understanding of the mufassir who interprets ḍaraba as an order to hit is clear in the language rules, namely literal meaning. Thus, the debate over the license to beat one's wife in Islam is still a polemic and Islam is still imaged as a religion that gives a license to beat one's wife. This image makes it difficult for Islam to harmonize with modern humanism and it becomes almost impossible for ethical values in Islam to be offered as part of the values of modern humanism. This qualitative research examines the literature related to the research focus and interviews religious experts, especially commentators, to solve research problems. Interpretation of the review of the word ḍaraba is carried out through text analysis using a spiritual hermeneutic approach as systematized by Abdul Hadi WM and strengthened by the understanding of religious experts through interviews. The research findings show that the spirit of Surah An-Nisā’ 34 is in accordance with the spirit of humanism, especially regarding emancipation and gender equality. But the meaning of ḍaraba needs to be resolved through spiritual hermeneutics. So, even though it has an ontological basis that is different from modern humanism, Islamic values can be in harmony with modern humanism through this approach.
