Abstract

The democratization process in Indonesia is in line with the emergence several Islamic mass organizations which accept or rejected the concept of democracy. Since the pre-independence era, Indonesia has been facing some Islamist groups that opposed to state’s ideology of democracy. This article presents the discussion among scholars about the compatibility between Islamic norms and democratic values, and in what position Indonesia is. The dealing question with the discussion is; does the proliferation of radical Islamist movement signify the incompatibility of Islam and democracy? By using sociological and historical approach, this paper analyzes in order to what extent the values of democracy and Islamism adapt in the frame of a democratic country. The analysis of this research results that the existing radical Islamist movement is not a failure of Indonesia’s effort to harmonize Islam with democracy. Thus, neither the presence of pro-democracy Islamic mass organizations nor the radical Islamist movement cannot be used as the final argument to answer whether Islam compatible with democracy or not. The results of this study reveal that democratization in Indonesia has been accompanied by the proliferation of Islamist movements. The proliferation of Islamist movements nowadays precisely indicates that democracy in Indonesia has a special experience regarding new formula of peacefully religion-state relations.

Abstract

Kidung Wahyu Kalaseba (KWK) is a new literary work echoing psycho-cultural resilience due to the negative impact of modernization and religious puritanism. KWK contains Javanese spiritualism that could encounter religious challenges and revive cultural values. KWK spreads through popular musical performances, such as dangdut, gamelan, and mix, unlike classical written literature. Today, it could reach wider audiences through social media platforms. This study employs a socio-historical and pragmatic approach. The former is used to analyze the socio-historical context when KWK was being written. Then the latter is used to see the function and benefit of KWK amid society. The study revealed that the revitalization of local tradition through KWK as a pop culture had attracted the millennial generation. KWK functions to revitalize Javanese spiritualism to deal with the destructive impact of modernization. Therefore, KWK proposes the importance of the spiritual journey by purifying the human soul to achieve true happiness.

Abstract

The dichotomy of sciences caused both the positive and negative effects for development of civilizations; such as poverty, economic colonialism and dehumanization. Therefore, the unity of sciences is an interesting and important to be discussed for developing a new and prosperous civilization. This paper discussed the unity of sciences according to Imam al-Ghazali (d. 1111) and its urgency to the issue of human life. For al-Ghazali, science must be unified in the aspects of ontology, epistemology, and axiology. These three aspects of knowledge united in one entity; such as three angles in a triangle. From the pespective of ontology, knowledge comes from God and cannot be separated from God, so all sciences are commendable. Epistemologically, the nature of science is the light coming from the illumination light of God. Science can be obtained by optimizing the function of reason and through revelation or inspiration. The validity of science is depended on how and sources used to obtain it. Knowledge is not for knowledge, but knowledge for human prosperity. To realize the concept of the unity of sciences it is needed a hard work, patience and many-stage processes; namely equal treatment on scientific and religious knowledge, dialogue, integration and interconnection between science and the end is the unity of sciences..

Abstract

Indonesia consisted of multiculture, ethnic and religion. There are six legal religions in Indonesia. Religious plurality is part of Indonesian life. In Religion, adherents always tried to compare between their own religion with other religions that can cause a truth claim of superiority of their religion. This caused any conflict like the case of GKI Yasmin in Bogor, three massive bomb blasts of Bali, and conflict of Ambon.  This is a library reseach applying sociological approach. To analyze the problem, author used the conflict theory of Gillin and Gillin saying that conflict can be caused by deferences. Therefore, it is necessary to understand how the intersection of religions in order to prevent the conflict, included religious intolerence.  This research find that the intersection of religion can be found in values of humanity or the horizontal aspect (ḥabl  min al-nās). While the vertical aspect (ḥabl  min Allāh), they are different. By understanding the intersection of religions and nature of these differences, it is expected that religious harmony can be reinforced.

Abstract

The community of Singkawang constituted the multi cultural society, in religion, ethnic, and culture. Historically Singkawang society was able to maintain inter religious harmony. The associative social interaction seemed to be potential to support the harmony in the society. Based on the paradigm of functional-structural, society was assumed as an organic system having inter-relatednes between one organ and another in order to maintain the existence of the society. Social interaction within Singkawang society was developed by the the interaction in the cyrcle of family, neighbourhood, economical activities, religious leaders, and the relation within culture and tradition. Inspite of this the relation between the element of society is still cosmopolitant, on which the society members are less active in developing community harmony.***Masyarakat Singkawang adalah masyarakat yang terdiri atas berbagai kelompok suku bangsa dan agama.
