Abstract

This study aims to reveal three leadership elements of the female leader at Nurul Ummah Putri Islamic Boarding School (PPNU-Pi) by exploring the nature of leadership, the decision-making process, and the leadership style. This study is grounded on qualitative research using a case study approach through interviews, observation, and documentation. This study highlights that nyai as the female leader at PPNU-Pi possesses a firm, caring, intelligent, straightforward, communicative, and optimistic nature of leadership. The decision-making process at PPNU-Pi is conducted in a relatively modern way. It starts with identifying the problem. Then, it will be followed by looking for alternative solutions. After selecting alternatives which are conducted together with the female leader, they will implement the solution. After applying the solution, there is a trial period to see how effective the solution has been implemented. Finally, this study discusses the implementation of female leader leadership in PPNU-Pi, which represents essential characteristics of transformational leadership such as female leader as an ideal influence, inspirational and motivational leader, and intellectual stimulators.

Abstract

This research is an effort to find the relevance of the relationship between religion and the state are ideal. Because the formalization of Islamic shariah issue in political discourse is an interesting study in the relation between religion and state. By using the library approach, this article analyzes the involvement of the state in regulating citizens to implement Islamic shariah in Indonesia. Neutrality of the state to be the key in finding the relationship of both. Theoretically, this study provides an explanation that neutrality is not only understood as a state of devotion to give the rights of citizens to pray by faith, but also to limit citizens. For the implementation of shariah will be established and run well, when the state has a neutrality. So the state does not attract Islamic shariah becomes an official policy or state laws (shariah formalization). So also a Muslim can bring religion into the political circle, but only in the level of political ethics.

Abstract

This article explores the challenges that immigrant Muslims faced in pre-1965 America in their efforts to find acceptance within the American host society. To understand this phenomenon I have used the ethnographic methods of research and collecting data focusing on a Palestinian Muslim family (Abukhdeir) who came to America in 1910 and settled in Provo, Utah as Kader family and adopted Mormonism. As such, this article demonstrates that the identity crisis of early generation Muslim immigrants resulted in the following consequences: (1) Who assimilated to the prevailing American melting pot culture of mainstream society, including converting to American religions; (2) Who did not assimilate, rather escaped the pressure of assimilation by returning to their home countries and resettled there without coming back to live in America; and (3) Who both assimilated and preserved their Islamic identities, as they were the children of returnees, which coincided with the wake of multiculturalism in America in the late 1960s. These grown-up children of the returnees then shared the new process of assimilation into multicultural America, replacing melting pot culture, and affiliated with the fastest-growing Muslim communities.

Abstract

Although wakaf has much importance for social living and practiced since a long time ago, but in fact wakaf has not maximally functioned. Still much numbers of people living under poor line level showed this fact. Some causes make wakaf is not effective. In one side, the cause is related to the human resources, especially in the side of the organizer (nāẓir). Other cause is the weakness of the accountability of wakaf institution. Applying doctrinal and non-doctrinal approach, this research showed that in PKPU the organizer implemented the principle of transparency and accountability in managing waqaf in the institution. The principle of accountability is implemented in the form of audit, both internally and externally by public accountant. Applying the principle of accountability had been increasing the publict trust to the wakaf institution.

Abstract

Salatiga is known for its diversity as there are more than 33 tribes living harmoniously together in this city. The existence of two religious-based education institutions, i.e. Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana and Institut Agama Islam Negeri Salatiga further proves the diversity of this city that already exists. Moreover, Salatiga respectively gained the predicate as the most top 10 tolerant cities in Indonesia within three years from a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that promotes tolerance. Based on functional-structural paradigm, society is assumed to be an organic system that has relationships among its parts to maintain the existing system. This study uses the constructivism approach with qualitative methods. The harmony established by CSOs, NGOs, the Government, and religious leaders through programs or activities is aimed to provide motivation and encouragement to the community or society so that they are able to maintain harmony amidst the diversity in Salatiga. Yet, it does not mean that there are no problems or obstacles threating this harmony such as the acts of radicalism from the groups originating from outside Salatiga. The radical groups are trying to mess the tolerance and harmony that has been established for a long time in Salatiga.

Abstract

The idea of Gamwell on“religion as rational” was based on the concept that religious freedom is nothing other than a political discourse that can be figured out only through a democratic resolution. Changing the paradigm from “religion as non-rational” to “religion as rational” is a necessary condition for entering a public debate. Yet, the sole public debate or public view is not enough to solve the modern political problem. The public debate must be guided by a constitutional procedure affirmed by the body politic so that it fulfills the criteria of formal claim about justice. Applying qualitative research and literature review this research tried to reveal: Gamwell’s idea of religious freedom, the features of the Islamic State as described by Abdul Rauf and Gamwell’s concept of religious freedom and the idea of establishing the Islamic State advocated by Abdul Rauf.

Abstract

This paper reviews a book entitled al-Sanī al-Maṭālib written by Kiai Nur Iman Mlangi Yogyakarta. This book is written in Arabic containing an interconnection between Arabic grammar and mysticism. This book is very interesting due to the fact that those two knowledges have its own rules. In addition, there is only small number of authors who had written with the same model, to name one of them is Shaikh Abdul Qadir bin Ahmad al-Kuhany with his work entitled Manniyat al-Fāqir al-Munjarid wa Sayrat al-Murīd al-Mutafarrid”. The book al-Sanī al-Maṭālib was predicted written in the late 18s Century or the beginning of 19s century, it is based on the period of Kiai Nur Iman’s life in which around the mid of 18s century. The grammatical rule of Arabic in this book was explained theosophically, it is started with the explanation of tauhid (oneness) as the basic learning for Muslim, followed by the meaning of each Arabic rule in mystical aspect.***Tulisan ini mereview buku yang berjudul al-Sanī al-Maṭālib yang ditulis oleh Kiai Nur Iman Mlangi Yogyakarta.
