Abstract

This paper discusses the effects of inter-ethnic conflict in 1999 on the social life in Sambas. Therefore, any effort dealing with post-conflict situation is needed, through the concept of Islamic character education to modify the Besaprah local wisdom in Malay-Sambas society. This study used a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach which tries to interpret the phenomena in Sambas society since the post-conflict of Malay-Madura in 1999. The research findings show that the inter-ethnic conflict in Sambas, West Kalimantan, occurring in 1999 led to some problems, i.e. moral and social problem, as well as the crisis of local wisdom values. Accordingly, empowering local wisdom values in Besaprah tradition has a contribution to Islamic education concept as it gives an alternative solution to cope with negative effects of the inter-ethnic conflict.

Basic issue on waqaf is the management, especially on the management of cash money. The institutions having in charge for managing the waqaf of cash money, have some management specific characteristics and patterns. Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the value of tolerance reflected in the stone-sculpture production in Muntilan. This study used a sociology research approach with an ethnographic research design. The data collection techniques were conducted through ethnographic observation and interviews as well as document data. The results showed that the stone craft production in Muntilan is local wisdom that reflects the value of tolerance. Most of the rock artisans are Moslems, but they continued stone sculpture production that is part of the Hindhu-Buddist tradition. The product is oriented towards consumer demand, which is a contrast to the beliefs of sculptors such as Buddha statues, Hindu deities, statues of Jesus, as well as statues of other religions. The sculptures separated themselves between work and religious issues. It illustrates an open attitude as well as tolerance in accepting and understanding differences. Such local wisdom with a long-standing tolerance value in the community is a potential for community development in realizing a harmonious and peaceful life.

The findings of this research are, multicultural society can be understood as a society that consists of several cultural communities with their overlapping but distinct conception of the world, a system of meaning, values, forms of social organizations, histories, customs, and practices. The idealized profile of a teacher of religious education is a type of teacher who meets the certain qualifications prescribed by Islamic teachings and is guided by the law and regulation in Indonesia, in particular.  Teacher of religious education has a very important role in preparing students to be good citizens in a multicultural society. Abstract

This paper is not only dealing with depiction of hell (divine punishment) which is very popular depicted by the speech and media news in Indonesia, but also description on meaning, and the possibility on motive behind that description. Applying Burke theory on logology, this paper revealed that the depiction of hell punishment constituted the ritual of purity. Based on the cycle of order, feeling of guilty, redemption through sacrifice to achieve the purity, general depiction on hell are a reflection of the challenges and complexity of legal rules and regulation that exactly will be broken off. This violation of the rule creates a sense of guilty and sin which come out as all the problems and difficulties that the majority of Indonesian must hold – the situation that generates scapegoat. The victims of the scapegoat became the apparent sinners, and the punishment is the sacrifaction which create satisfaction and a sense of clean up.***Tulisan ini tidak hanya untuk membahas penggambaran neraka (hukuman akhirat) yang sangat populer sebagaimana digambarkan dalam pidato dan media di Indonesia, tetapi juga untuk mengungkapkan makna dan kemungkinan motif di balik gambaran tersebut. The tradition of establishing a house in Tanjung Pauh, Kerinci contains noble educational values such as deliberation, mutual cooperation, togetherness, knowing and helping each other, monotheism, recalling kindness, and courtesy. Those values are aligned with the concept of character education proposed by Thomas Lickona. The values can be implemented into family education especially in rural communities of Tanjung Pauh, Kerinci. The character values in harvesting rice carried out by the community teach civilized attitude towards plants and sharing with others. Besides, the community also has principles of respect, attention, respect, and compliance with customs regulations. The ceremony is performed based on custom and religious teachings with the intention to reject any disasters experienced by human beings, plants, and animals. Besides, the ceremony performed contains meanings of gratitude to God Almighty in order to reduce the punishment of the grave space, especially for parents who died and owned rice fields. For those who are still alive, these activities are carried out with the hope that everything done runs well, gains healthy bodies and longevity.

Abstract

Paguyuban Sumarah is one well-known aliran kepercayaan in Indonesia existed since the 1930s. The group practised Sujud Sumarah as the most essential ritual attended by the whole member of organizations from multiple religious backgrounds and identities, gathering them in a venue of interreligious ritual participation. This paper will discuss the aspect of interrituality in Sujud Sumarah, considering it is practised by multi-religious believers through the discourse-analysis method following the framework of interrituality offered by Moyaert, an interreligious scholar from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This research concludes that it is acceptable to define the implementation of Sujud Sumarah as an interreligious ritual participation, yet it could not explicitly be categorized as ‘inner-facing’ or ‘outer-facing’ interrituality as it was classified by Moyaert. This paper also demonstrated, in general, the fundamental system of belief of Sumarah was derived from syncretism and transcendent unity of religions, leading the discussion to be possibly elaborated further in the study of interreligious relations.

Abstract

In Islamic perspective, researching universe is not only investigate the universe materially but also what is behind the universe itself. So, the universe was not viewed autonomously. This paper tried to elaborate significance of philosophy of science for humanity in Islamic perspective by using three fundamental structures of knowledge, namely ontology, epistemology, and axiology. Both Islam and science have to put humanity as center for research. The paradigm of Islamic science opens up an integral-holistic thought, and can not be separated from axiological meaning, that the purposes toward the enlightenment, progress, welfare, safety, and happiness for the whole human being in this world. So, Islam and science could give the most important roles to human’s welfare and safety.
