Abstract

Spatial ability is one of the essential abilities to be mastered by students, especially in geometry. There is not much research, especially in Indonesian, that examines students' spatial abilities and their relation to Descriptive Geometry. This study aims to analyze students' misconceptions in the Descriptive Geometry course and describe the profile of students' spatial abilities in online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study's subjects from the Mathematics Education Department of Universitas Negeri Jakarta. This research is descriptive qualitative. The learning was carried out in 16 meetings with three initial meetings offline, and the next 13 meetings online. The test was given twice at the 8th and 16th meetings accompanied by interviews with students who made mistakes in taking the test. The test results showed that students who made mistakes did not have the ability to spatial perception, spatial relation, and spatial orientation. However, there was a case of students who made mistakes still having the ability to spatial perception, spatial relation, and spatial orientation. The obstacles that affect students' spatial abilities are online learning that is not supported by technical matters, namely: limited internet networks and internet quota availability.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the role of the context to enable the students to understand the concept of volume of a sphere in class VIII. The context of this research was using a watermelon as teaching aids by using PMRI approach. The method used in this study was design research; the stages were preleminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. The results of this study indicated that the role of watermelon as teaching aids supported the students to develop their knowledge about the concept of volume of a sphere, and enhance their understanding about the material so that the learnin becomes more meaningful. In giving the volume of a sphere its better not to be taught the students by giving formula directly, however they were given the opportunity to understand the volume of a sphere with their own concept in real situation. The existence of such a situation, the student will be easier to learn the material volume of a sphere at a higher level.

Abstract

Learning mathematics has a significant contribution to the students’ daily activities, one of which is on social arithmetic topic. The implementation of social arithmetic, in general, is mostly found in buying-selling and banking activities. However, students still find difficulties in understanding this topic. It is because the teaching and learning activities still use a conventional approach, which restricts the students to imagine how it is implemented in daily life. Therefore, this paper aims to describe the innovative learning activities of social arithmetic among junior high school students using the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. This research was conducted in three meetings, and the researcher acted as the teacher in the class. The results showed that the innovative learning of social arithmetic using the RME approach and word problems could improve the students’ learning outcomes with an average score of 81.92% and 92.59% of the total of students scored above passing grade.
