Abstract

Kampung Cakrawala is an informal settlement in Semarang City without formal institutional structures or legally recognized leadership, which limits residents’ access to administrative and social services. This study examines the dynamics and challenges of leadership within the Kampung Cakrawala paguyuban, addressing the limited research on leadership in settlements outside formal institutions. Using an ethnographic approach through participant observation and in-depth interviews, the study finds that the paguyuban leader functions as a coordinator, conflict mediator, and liaison with external parties. Drawing on Victor Turner’s concept of liminality, the findings show that the kampung’s “titipan” status creates administrative ambiguity that shapes leadership patterns and social life. In this context, the paguyuban leader performs roles similar to those of a neighbourhood unit (RT), exercising flexible, trust-based leadership without formal legitimacy. The study concludes that leadership in Kampung Cakrawala represents a form of collective adaptation within a liminal condition, characterized by egalitarian social relations and a combination of spontaneous and normative community forms.

Abstract

Families play a crucial role in the recovery process of patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Still, at the same time, they can be a source of stigma that exacerbates patients’ psychological and social conditions. This study aims to analyze family beliefs, forms of stigma within the family environment, and family behaviors toward MDR-TB patients in the urban area of Bandar Lampung. This study employs a qualitative, constructivist approach. Data analysis draws on Social Pathology Theory to understand stigma, prejudice, and discriminatory behavior as resulting from negative social constructions and misunderstandings about the disease. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation involving seven key informants who were immediate family members of MDR-TB patients. Data collection reached saturation, at which point no new information was found. The results indicate that family stigma manifests in three main forms: feelings of shame, a tendency to blame the patient, and excessive fear of transmission. This stigma is reinforced by the misconception that MDR-TB is highly contagious, difficult to cure, caused by an unhealthy lifestyle, and a frightening disease. These family beliefs influence how patients are treated, ranging from avoidance and discrimination to support during treatment. These findings underscore the importance of family-based health education in correcting misconceptions and reducing stigma, thereby improving the quality of family support and treatment adherence among patients with MDR-TB.

Abstract

Cross-border labor mobility is a continuously growing phenomenon in the Indonesia-Malaysia border region, particularly in the Aruk area of Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan, which shares a direct border with Sarawak. This study analyzes the role of transnational networks in shaping the dynamics of informal workers in the Aruk border zone of Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, with the research site located in the area of the Aruk State Border Crossing Post (Indonesian: Pos Lintas Batas Negara (PLBN) Aruk) and surrounding villages. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation studies involving cross-border workers, migrant worker families, and local community figures. The findings indicate that from a border studies perspective, border zones function not merely as dividing lines between states but also as dynamic and productive social spaces that shape cross-national economic interactions. Transnational networks formed through kinship ties, shared ethnicity, and geographical proximity facilitate informal labor mobility. Social capital in the form of transnational networks serves as a resource that provides access to job information, trust, and support for migrant workers. Beyond serving as channels for distributing information, transnational networks also function as informal social protection mechanisms capable of reducing economic and social risks throughout the labor migration process. The dynamics of informal workers in the Aruk border area demonstrate that socially networked cross-border connectivity is a key factor in linking local communities to the labor market in Sarawak, while simultaneously strengthening the survival strategies of border communities within the context of regional economic inequality.

Abstract

This research tries to analyze the motives behind young adult involvement in oil palm fruit bunch theft in Sikakak Village and to explain the phenomenon through the perspectives of social anomie and strain theory. This study used a case study design and a qualitative methodology. Purposively chosen informants were used to gather data through in-depth interviews, documentation, and observation. Results show that adolescent involvement in oil palm fruit bunch theft is driven by various motives: economic needs, entertainment needs, the desire for parental attention, and peer recognition. These findings suggest that theft functions as an adaptive response to the structural and relational pressures experienced by youth. From a strain theory perspective, the dominant pattern observed is innovation, particularly in economically motivated actions, while motives related to consumption and peer recognition tend to reflect rebellion. Meanwhile, from an anomie perspective, this phenomenon reflects the weakening of normative regulation due to economic inequality, family dysfunction, and shifting social values. This study concludes that adolescent involvement in oil palm theft reflects broader social dynamics.

Abstract

Food security is a fundamental human right, yet agricultural workers in rural areas remain vulnerable due to structural limitations and economic instability. This study employs a qualitative, descriptive approach. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design. The data collection instruments and procedures used included in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. A total of 8 informants working as farm laborers were interviewed to understand their perspectives and life experiences regarding livelihood uncertainty. Data analysis was conducted using qualitative descriptive methods based on the Theory of Sustainable Livelihoods proposed by Chambers and Conway and further developed by Scoones, which emphasizes the interrelationship between livelihood assets, household strategies, and the context of vulnerability. The research findings indicate that: (1) the food security of farmworker households is driven by several factors, including food availability, economic access, income diversification, the role of government social assistance, and land management. Meanwhile, inhibiting factors include dependence on seasons and weather, limited economic access to food, lack of land ownership, and limited alternative employment. (2) To survive, farmworker households employ adaptive strategies. These strategies include adjusting consumption patterns by reducing the types and quantities of food, managing food reserves from harvests, changing economic behavior during crises through saving and seeking additional work, dividing roles within the household—particularly women’s roles in managing consumption and finances—and leveraging social networks with family and neighbors as sources of social support. In conclusion, farmworker households maintain food security through adaptive livelihood strategies that optimize available assets, diversify income, and strengthen social support networks despite facing significant structural and seasonal constraints.

Abstract

Women batik businesses in Tanjungbumi Village, Bangkalan Regency, serve as important actors in maintaining cultural heritage while sustaining household economies. Despite the rapid expansion of digitalization, many of these entrepreneurs do not fully adopt contemporary marketing platforms such as Instagram or online marketplaces. Instead, they rely on WhatsApp and direct, relationship-based marketing. This study aims to examine the contextual rationality underlying these choices through Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach. Employing a descriptive quantitative design, the study involves all 49 women batik business owners in Tanjungbumi using a total sampling technique. The data analysis techniques used were preliminary inferential statistical analyses, including validity tests, reliability tests, and normality tests. The findings reveal that access to digital resources does not necessarily translate into enhanced capabilities, as not all actors utilize social media despite having the means. WhatsApp is preferred due to its perceived efficiency, familiarity, and ease of use within existing social networks. Furthermore, the functionings valued by these women include flexible working arrangements that accommodate domestic responsibilities while maintaining control over production and marketing processes. Importantly, resistance to full digitalization reflects a deliberate choice to preserve the quality of social interactions and trust-based relationships with buyers through direct transactions. These results demonstrate that economic decision-making among women batik entrepreneurs is shaped not merely by technological availability, but by contextually grounded evaluations of well-being, agency, and social relations. The study highlights the importance of understanding digital adoption through a capability lens that recognizes local values and lived realities.

Abstract

Social interaction plays a fundamental role in shaping social relationships and maintaining harmony within communities. This study aims to examine the patterns and forms of social interaction between the Bajo community of Torosiaje Laut and the local Gorontalo community. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed to explore the dynamics of social interaction within the community. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation involving village officials, traditional leaders, members of the Bajo community, residents, and visitors. The findings reveal that social interactions between the Bajo and local Gorontalo communities are harmonious and sustainable. These interactions are reflected through several indicators of social interaction, including social contact, communication, cooperation, mutual understanding, shared perceptions, empathy, openness, and social support. Cultural differences between the two communities do not lead to social conflict; instead, they strengthen social cohesion and community integration. This study concludes that constructive social interaction plays a crucial role in maintaining social harmony and strengthening community integration in Torosiaje Village.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga AFT Minangkabau's corporate social responsibility (CSR) program in relation to Kompak Raja Samudera. It analyzes it using Anthony Giddens' structuration theory to understand the relationship between agents and structures. The background of this research stems from a social mapping in Ulakan Tapakih District, which identified Nagari Seulayat Ulakan as an area with potential for developing conservation and biodiversity groups, aligning with this CSR program. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving informants from the company, Kompak Raja Samudera, and the Nagari Seulayat Ulakan government. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to obtain a comprehensive empirical overview. Research findings indicate that CSR practices can be understood through an enable-and-constrain perspective based on Giddens' structuration theory, in which programs provide opportunities to strengthen the capacity of conservation groups while simultaneously presenting limitations such as restricted access, participation, and program sustainability. This situation reflects the dynamic interaction between agents and structures in implementing community-based CSR. Success in CSR execution is determined by the ability of groups and communities to balance structural support with the maneuvering space of local actors. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of formulating contextual and sustainable CSR policies, as well as the need for further research to examine the long-term sustainability of programs.

Abstract

The popularity of padel in Indonesia has continued to rise in recent years. This growth has coincided with the expansion of social media as a space that shapes the image and social meaning of padel. The study aims to explain the process of producing symbolic value in padel and how this value is consumed in shaping players’ lifestyles. It employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to analyze players’ experiences and subjective interpretations of padel activities. The study involved five informants selected through purposive sampling, consisting of individuals involved in padel promotion, tournament organizers, and beginner players. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The findings indicate that symbolic value in padel is not produced individually but is shaped through collaboration between brands, communities, and social media. Social media functions not only as a communication tool but also as a space for the production and dissemination of meaning that drives symbolic consumption, where players engage in padel not for its functional purpose but for the social meanings attached to it. This symbolic consumption develops into a lifestyle, reflected in the documentation of playing activities and the use of leisure time. This finding extends the application of Jean Baudrillard’s theory of consumption to the context of sport by demonstrating that padel is not only consumed as a sporting activity but also as a symbol of identity and social recognition, which is reproduced as part of players’ lifestyle.
