Abstract

This study investigates the framing and presences of the protest paradigm in Reuters' coverage of activism events in Southeast Asia involving The Hunger Games' Three Finger Salute. In recent years, several protests in the region have adopted this salute as a means of expressing dissent against their respective governments. These diverse activisms not only attract media attention as political events but also signify interconnected political phenomena through a gesture inspired by popular narratives such The Hunger Games. Reuters, an international news agency, has shown a heightened interest in this phenomenon compared to other news agencies that focusing solely on political activities. While it is common for news reports to embody the protest paradigm when covering activism, Reuters' coverage specific focus on events involving the Three Finger Salute sets it apart. The protest paradigm highlights the media's tendency to depict social protests with a negative sentiment. Through text and framing analysis, this research delves into how Reuters selectively emphasizes certain aspects of these fan activisms. The findings reveal that Reuters framed the coverage of fan activisms around authoritarian government, youth and student, and royalist. Reuters also has negative sentiment and continues to perpetuate the protest paradigm.

Abstract

Abstract

The growing prevalence of social media use among adolescents and young adults has raised concerns about its potential impact on mental health. This study was guided by the hypothesis that higher intensity of social media engagement is associated with adverse psychological outcomes. A systematic literature review was performed in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines by searching Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Proquest, and Google Scholar for empirical studies published between 2015–2025 involving individuals aged 12–24 years. Twenty eligible articles were analysed, encompassing cross-sectional, longitudinal, and randomized controlled trial designs. The synthesis revealed that excessive social media use, particularly exceeding three to four hours daily, was consistently linked to depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, emotional dysregulation, loneliness, and increased risk of self-harm or suicidal ideation. Key mediating mechanisms included fear of missing out, negative social comparison, cyberbullying, and poor sleep quality. Conversely, evidence from randomized controlled trials demonstrated that limiting usage to approximately 30 minutes per day or temporary abstinence significantly improved well-being, life satisfaction, and psychological resilience. These findings highlight the importance of targeted preventive strategies, including digital literacy, healthy lifestyle promotion, and structured time management, to mitigate the negative consequences of excessive social media use in adolescents and young adults.

Abstract

The last ten years have seen the overall trend in the loss of democracy around the world identified as being connected to three significant assumptions: (1) the digital world is fully taken over by surveillance capitalism and dominated by political elites; (2) Generation Z (born circa 1997-2012) is apolitical; and (3) democratic backsliding seals the potential of renewal. In this article, the authors provide an alternative view. They investigate Gen Z activism in Indonesia, Nepal, and France. The purpose is to determine the role of Gen Z involvement in such countries in reopening the democratic space. The research design is a qualitative study using the critical discourse analysis (CDA). The paper is based on media coverage, global databases and records of the different protests worldwide. The findings indicate that democracy is not completely repressed; on the contrary, digital spaces despite monitoring and control, remain the avenues of resistance. The political activity of Gen Z is conducted through innovative spontaneity and popular culture and even in the conditions of democratic deficit, these political outpourings are the signs of the potential democratic rejuvenation. To sum up, the paper emphasizes that Gen Z members are not just the objects of democracy but also the participants of the process of creating a transnational democratic future.

Abstract

The presence of Korean-style beauty products made in Indonesia serves as tangible evidence of the popularity of South Korea’s beauty industry, commonly referred to as K-Beauty, in Indonesia. These locally-produced Korean-inspired beauty products provide an alternative solution for young Indonesian women who are unable to access or afford original Korean beauty products, which are often categorized as high-end in the Indonesian market. This phenomenon, therefore, presents an intriguing subject for further study. The primary aim of this research is to examine how symbolic consumption practices, or lifestyling, are expressed through the use of Korean-style beauty products in Indonesia by young women, who serve as informants in this study. Additionally, the study explores the identity narratives that emerge from the use of Indonesian-made Korean-style beauty products. Using critical phenomenology and interviews conducted with four young women as users of these products, the findings reveal that the use of Indonesian-made Korean-style beauty products is primarily aimed at constructing an ideal self-identity.

Abstract

This article analyses how young queer people in Indonesia navigate a world of work governed by heteronormative, religious and moral norms. Drawing on developments in Queer analysis within the tradition of Critical Youth Studies, this research relies on Mary Anna Robertson's thinking to understand the transition of queer youth as a non-linear, fragile process of becoming, shaped by institutional relations, rather than as a linear progression towards professional stability. Conceptually, this analysis also draws on Sara Ahmed's concept of orientation, Eve Sedgwick's theory of the closet, and Judith Butler's notion of performativity. These three concepts help to reveal how work transitions are experienced as processes of negotiating the direction of life, visibility, and bodily presence in everyday work. Affective orientation shapes choices of safe spaces and relationships, closet practices enable strategic management of knowledge about oneself, while professional performativity normalises the body while opening up limited spaces for resistance. Based on semi-structured interviews with seven young queer professionals in various sectors, this study shows that work compatibility is constructed as a temporary affective-moral achievement. Professionalism is thus understood as the result of ongoing queer negotiations so that the body can be present, work, and be recognised without fully submitting to normative order.

Abstract

This article discusses strategies employed by young Japanese-language learners to accumulate cultural capital related to Japanese language proficiency within a field that is undergoing significant transformation due to the development of internet technology. These technological developments have reshaped the field by enabling autonomous accumulation of Japanese-language cultural capital, expanding opportunities for flexible learning, and opening up spaces for personalized learning. Based on a qualitative study of four informants, this article identifies three main patterns of youth strategies for navigating online learning activities. These strategies are shaped by reflexivity, which interacts with their habitus, digital capital, and previously accumulated forms of capital. These strategies are referred to in this article as systematic exploration, selective-limited exploration, and affective exploration. Through these strategies, the youth, who are agents in the field of Japanese language learning, mobilize their habitus, digital capital, and other previously accumulated capital to respond to, adapt to, and negotiate within the dynamics of a field increasingly structured by digital technologies.
