Abstract

Injuries contribute to disability and morbidity in countries around the world. Among the elderly, falls are the most common type of injury, with an incidence rate of approximately 2.3–7% per 1,000 individuals. Injuries can lead to physical impairments, including reduced limb function. In the elderly population, particularly those aged 65 years and older, injuries are associated with a high risk of mortality and severe disability. Preventing injuries and falls is a critical public health concern. Families serve as essential support systems for addressing injuryrelated issues within households and the surrounding environment. This activity aimed to provide families with education on preventing and managing injuries in vulnerable populations. Health education sessions were delivered to health cadres and community members through lectures, discussions, and expert-led questionand-answer sessions. Educational materials included PowerPoint presentations and pocketbooks. At the conclusion of the sessions, a group demonstration was conducted on the management of splints in community settings. Knowledge was assessed using a questionnaire developed based on the health education materials. Fall risk screening was conducted using the First Time Injury Falls (FIF) instrument. The results revealed that among the 27 respondents, knowledge levels significantly improved after the educational sessions (p-value < 0.05). Fall risk screening outcomes indicated that 20 respondents (74.1%) were at low risk for falls, 5 respondents (18.5%) were at moderate risk, and 2 respondents (7.4%) were at high risk. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that health education is effective in enhancing family knowledge about injury prevention and management in vulnerable populations.

Abstract

Central Java ranks fourth among regions for the highest number of diabetes melitus (DM) cases, following Jakarta, Yogyakarta, and East Kalimantan. Grogol District in Sukoharjo Regency had the greatest prevalence of DM cases in 2019, accounting for 18.41% of the total. Diabetes melitus significantly impairs the overall well-being of individuals as it affects individuals across all age groups, including those who can work and those who cannot. If left unmanaged, it can lead to a range of outcomes. The Karanglo Village community is considered at high risk for diabetes melitus (DM) due to a history of health ailments and elevated blood glucose levels. Furthermore, this region is still lacking any health education interventions. This activity aimed to do earlier screening and monitoring of blood sugar levels, as well as providing health education, using the SEE approach (Screening, Health Education, and Exercise) to monitor diabetes melitus. The program was implemented in the period from November 2023 to January 2024, which includes a total of 27 participants, all of whom are female. The implementation of the programs involves the following methods: conducting blood sugar level screenings, engaging in diabetes exercises twice a week, providing health education in six meetings that cover topics such as the epidemiology and etiology, risk factors and prevention, symptoms and diagnosis, complications and management of DM, as well as blood glucose monitoring. Apart from using tools in the form of presentation slides, health education also utilized educational posters. At the end of the program, there was an increase in knowledge by 21.5% (p=0.024) based on pretest and posttest scores, improvements in blood sugar levels, total cholesterol levels, and body mass index. To follow up on the program, a group of independent blood sugar observers has been formed who is responsible for further monitoring blood sugar in program participants.

Abstract

Straw, a byproduct of rice harvesting, is a waste material from farming activities that can be repurposed as animal feed and organic fertilizer. Rice straw, when supplemented with probiotics, can enhance feed nutrition, and its high potassium content contributes to the fertility of agricultural soil. The purpose of this community service activity was to increase the knowledge of the Sri Warga farmer group about the benefits of rice straw and the application of organic waste shredding machine technology. The physical shredding of rice straw improves its quality as animal feed and accelerates the composting process for organic fertilizer. The results of the community service activity demonstrated the farmer group members’ enthusiasm for adopting organic waste shredding machine technology and utilizing rice straw. There was a notable increase in their understanding of the dual benefits of rice straw—as a nutritious animal feed and as a resource for enhancing soil quality through organic fertilizers. This activity significantly improved the knowledge and awareness of Sri Warga farmer group members about the potential uses of rice straw. A post-activity questionnaire revealed that 95% of the farmer group members understood the benefits and nutritional content of rice straw for use as organic fertilizer or animal feed, compared to only 70% before the activity. This highlights the success of the community service initiative in empowering the Sri Warga farmer group wi

Abstract

The village of Jagaraga, located in the Sawan district of Buleleng Regency, Bali Province, had significant potential in both culture and agriculture, particularly in rice farming. More than half of the village’s land area was rice fields, and over two-thirds of the villagers were rice farmers. However, ensuring healthy soils and crops through effective fertilizer solutions remained a major challenge. The aim of the community development initiative was to empower the village farmers to become innovative through collaborative learning and by inventing and commercializing a slow-release nano fertilizer. A participatory action and learning approach was used to engage the rice farming community. The Subak Babakan farmer organization and the local rice milling enterprise, PB Suwela Amertha, were involved in the empowerment activities, which included information sessions, training, technology application, guidance, evaluation, and sustainability planning. As a result, four formulas of slow-release organic nano fertilizers in pellet form were successfully developed. Additionally, a four-helix partnership involving academicians, the farmer community, enterprises, and the government was established to build a business platform for commercializing the innovation. Through this collaboration, academicians and community farmers successfully learned to address the primary challenges in rice agriculture innovatively while promoting sustainable practices to maintain the health of the land and the well-being of the villagers.

Abstract

Pro-environmental behavior is increasingly demonstrated by the younger generation across the globe. In Gunungkidul, a rural region of Indonesia, the young generation initiated the resan community that emerged in response to the Cempaka hurricane of 2017, focusing on revitalizing local springs as reservoirs to mitigate prolonged dry seasons caused by climate change. This study explores the formation, worldviews, and perceptions surrounding the resan community’s activities through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and social media analysis. Spanning 42 of Gunungkidul’s 144 villages, this youth-driven movement is rooted in Javanese cultural values, emphasizing water conservation and community resilience through local wisdom, tacit knowledge, and grassroots participation. Diverse perceptions about resan reflect an ongoing dialogue that requires further attention from stakeholders and policymakers. The Resan Gunungkidul Community provides a platform for individuals who care about the environment and wish to contribute to conservation efforts. Community participation, especially the young generation, is a cornerstone of this initiative, promoting water conservation rooted in collective action. The study highlights the importance of integrating localized efforts like tree planting with broader multidisciplinary approaches, aligning with global practices of ecological preservation and sustainable development.

Abstract

Breast and cervical cancer constitute the two most prevalent cancer types globally, with a disproportionately high mortality rate among women. While cervical cancer ranks eighth in terms of incidence, it remains a significant public health concern. A common challenge is the community’s delay in seeking healthcare attributed to a dearth of information, consequently leading to delayed treatment. The Pinrang Regency Health Department and the Family Empowerment and Welfare Team (TP-PKK) of South Sulawesi identified a high incidence of breast and cervical cancer among women in the Pinrang region. A primary obstacle to addressing this issue is the absence of public awareness regarding breast and cervical cancer, including early warning signs, symptoms, and associated risks. This problem is compounded by the district’s lack of an anatomical pathology specialist, hindering public education efforts and diagnostic capabilities. The objective of this activity was to enhance awareness of early detection for these two gynecological cancers in order to reduce mortality and morbidity rates associated with cancer. The method comprised an educational session on breast and cervical cancer, practicing SADARI, attended by 145 participants, followed by Pap smear tests for 45 volunteers. Program effectiveness was evaluated through pretest and posttest. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test was conducted to compare pretest and posttest scores. The results revealed a highly significant increase in scores p = 0.000 (p<0.005), suggesting that the educational program was successful in improving participants’ knowledge. A significant proportion of participants (57.8%) reported undergoing a Pap smear for the first time, highlighting the need for enhanced awareness and knowledge-sharing efforts regarding early detection of cervical cancer. The Pinrang Regency Health Department and TP-PKK provided essential support and participation. The Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) funds this community service project. The project was executed under contract number 0031/UN.4.22/PM.01.01.2024.

Abstract

The INDULA (Inovasi Daur Ulang Sampah/Waste Recycling Innovation) program for sustainable development in Mekarwangi Village was initiated to address the growing volume of waste and the community’s limited knowledge of waste management. These challenges negatively impacted the environment and public health, necessitating efforts to educate residents on the importance of recycling. The program employed a structured methodology encompassing preparation, implementation, and evaluation stages. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, focusing on individuals directly affected by the waste management issues. Data collection utilized pre-test and post-test instruments to assess program impact. The analysis revealed significant changes before and after program implementation. Initially, 75% of household waste in the village underwent no sorting, and only 20% of respondents had basic knowledge of recycling. The community also lacked recycling skills and access to markets for recycled products. Following the program, at least 80% of participants understood the importance of recycling and its practical applications. Housewives and youth began creating innovative products from waste, with 50 individuals trained to produce items of economic value. Recycled products were introduced to local markets and e-commerce platforms, leading to a 20% increase in local economic income within three months of training. Additionally, the village established a more structured waste management system, reducing landfill waste by up to 50%. This program demonstrated a measurable positive impact on community awareness, skill development, and local economic growth.
