Abstract

This paper discusses the struggle of environmental NGO in protecting the environment. Through the case of PT Indorayon paper pulp and rayon fiber plant in North Sumatra, this paper highlights a new approach of NGO's strategy in protecting environment from industrial exploitation. By combining traditional approach such as protest and demostration with formal and legal channel as well as network among NGOs, the movement has successfully forced PT Indorayon to close down. This paper suggests that the case of NGOs movement against PT Indorayon, could becomea model of social movement in Indonesia, particularly in environmental issues.

Such problem is easily understood, but has not been succesfully dealth by Indonesian government, as it is purely as a housing problem. Abstract

The concept of ambidexterity in organization theory refers to an organization's ability to innovate in explorative manners (Duncan, 1980). Ambidexterity can be identified into structural ambidexterity and contextual ambidexterity (Tushman, O'Reilly, 1990). In small medium enterprises, for example, innovation activities take contextual form since most owners act both as entrepreneurs and business leaders (Kusumastuti, et.al., 2015), while in established corporations innovation activities generally occur in structural form. Thus research takes academic institution as its locus, within which innovation activities are mandatory for all civitas academica (academic community). The study uses mixed method for collecting data through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. It shows that university has the capacity to provide context in institutional support and remuneration system as a means stimulate lecturers and researchers to be more innovative. The scheme also provided structure at the university and faculty level as tools to coordinate and integrate research projects. The organizational learning at the individual level reflects the pattern of contextual ambidexterity process.

Abstract

This article scrutinizes the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) concept on the recognition of indigenous society’s rights over agrarian resources. It is argued that the concept is relevant to study forms of social relation between corporations and indigenous societies. Publication about that is little. Indigenous societies across Indonesia insist that they have rights over agrarian sources within their customary territory and the rights are recognized by the Indonesian state as well as international bodies. Academicians only pay attention to the government’s responsibility to recognize and respect the indigenous society’s rights. It is contended that from the concept of CSR a corporation is responsible for recognizing and respecting indigenous societies’ rights over agrarian sources, but this article demonstrates that realization of indigenous community’s rights by corporations is dependent upon pressure from indigenous communities rather than coporations’ initiative.

Abstract

This article aims at addressing the question on the role of global civil society movement and its significance to the WTO and developing countries. The WTO has been critized as the Rich Man's Club since it primarily serves the benefits of developed countries. The emergence of global civil society movement can be considered as the opportunity to diminish the undesirable effects of the existing trading order. However, the findings show that despite the rapid growth of such a movement, their agendas do not always correspond to the developing countries needs. Some facts even demonstrate that sometimes their activities are conflicting with developing countries main interests.

Democray as communicative action involving the ruler and ruled is underthread by the increasingly popular ide of mass media privatization. The supposedly efficent mode of marked-based system, in fact, fails to satisfy the need to facilitate people's actualization of their citizenship rights, and enhancing their communicative competence. The idea of citizenship is replace by 'customer service' for the sake of capital accumulation and control.

Abstract

Applied in most countries, neo-liberalism has shifted the orientation of mass media from the public to the market. Journalism, as a result, tends to be driven by the market in which this leads to the failure of mass media in advancing democracy. This article demonstrates how the market-driven journalism creates the crisis of democracy.

Abstract

After 11 September 2001, hijab and women with hijab have become the new subaltern in the contemporary social and cultural relationships in France. It is interesting to see how political elites, society and women with hijab are seeing those symbols as part of their subject position—emphasizing the concept of ‘self’ and ‘others’. This paper is based on research which employed Critical Discourse method, specifically to examine the level of actor’s positioning in order to elaborate how positioning is used to examine the dynamics of social relation in France, including the various forms of its transformation and its resistence.
