Abstract

The Incidence Rate (IR) of dengue hemorrhagic fever has increased sharply. Indonesia is the country with the highest incidence rate of dengue in South East Asia. Denpasar municipality and Badung regency have the highest incidence rate of dengue in Bali. Community leaders hold an important role in decreasing the IR.This research aimed to explore the community leaders’ experiences in preventing dengue. This study was a qualitative research with a phenomenology approach. Participants of this study included five community leaders from Pererenan Village, Mengwi District, Badung Regency.Six themes assessed in this study included: 1) Inadequate knowledge of dengue vectors; 2) Perspectives in the prevention of dengue; 3) Low community participation; 4) The combination of prevention methods; 5) Inadequate coordination; and 6) Poor follow-up.Knowledge, participation, empowerment of the community, and the coordination between stakeholders including community, community leaders and health sectors holds an important role in the prevention of dengue.

Abstract

Pesticide use amongst farmers remains high in Bali. Pesticide use causes acute- to chronic- health effects. This study focusses on assessing the use of protective gear amongst farmers using pesticides and measuring their hemoglobin level. This was a cross-sectional study in 71 male farmers in the village of Riang Gede, Penebel, Tabanan, Bali. Data was collected by interview and blood test. Analysis was performed using SPSS 18.0.Mean age of farmers was 51,2 years and mean body mass index (BMI) was 21,5 kg/m2. Most of the farmershad an education level of primary school. Use of full protective gear was low for mask, boot, eye-protection, and gloves. Hemoglobin level was abnormal in 49,3% of farmers with a mean hemoglobin level of 12,2 g/dl which was lower than that of the normal population. This study showedthat the use of appropriate protective gear is low and that pesticide use might contribute to the lowering of hemoglobin level.

Abstract

Within different target audiences, the media and scholarly journals have significant roles in enhancing the awareness and influencing the development of HIV prevention-related policies. However, particularly in developing and poor countries, the media seem to affect policy development in contradictory ways. Thus, it is interesting to investigate how the increase in prevalence of HIV among female sex workers (FSWs) in Indonesia is represented in the media and to make a comparison of this representation with those in scholarly articles. Using three types of newspaper and peer-reviewed scholarly articles, this paper found that the media tend to frame the problem and its risk factors as merely a health problem produced by unsafe behaviours that are inappropriate to the local culture and belief. Efforts to challenge dominant values through the involvement of local media should encourage local journalists aware of the consequences of their chosen media template. Furthermore, given the fact that the majority of scholarly articles included in the analysis focused more on biological and behavioural factors of HIV infection, more social research is needed.

Abstract

The Nusa penida corn is locally produced in Nusa Penida. Corn starch, on the other hand, can be modified to produce food containing better nutrition values and overcome basic properties of natural starch that is less profitable in the production of food such as pie. Up to date, there is limited research studying the organoleptic characteristic and nutritional value of pie in Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to find the organoleptic characteristic and nutritional value of pie made from modified corn starch from Nusa Penida. This research used a simple complete random design with 5 levels of treatment of nusa penida modified corn starch (NCMS) starting from 0%, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%, with two repetitions. The total energy from pie was measured by proximate analysis meanwhile the organoleptic characteristic was determined by preferent test.Result showed that pie produced with 20% NMCS has the highest overall acceptance and has the best taste with a score of 4.8, significantly differrent (p<0,05) with other treatments. The pie contained 429.22 kcal, but did not show significant differences (p>0,05) with other treatments. It can be concluded that the pie produced by a substitution of 20% wheat flour with NMCS was the more preferred pie by panelists.

Abstract

Lactobacillus spp. FBB (isolates 60, 72, dan 75), isolated from feces of healthy infants, were tested for resistance in a modified gastric juice in vitro, before being applied in in vivo tests. These isolates were exposed for 7 hours in the modified gastric juice (added with pepsin, pancreatin, and NaDC) with various pH of 2, 3, 4, or 8. Isolates of FBB that showed the most resistant properties in this test was identified by applying molecular method or by sequencing its 16S rDNA. In this test, the FBB isolates showed various degree of resistance to the modified gastric juice conditions. FBB72 was found to be more resistant than the two other isolates. This isolate appeared to have the ability to reach colon (viable when reach colon), although its density was very low (104 CFU/ml and 103 CFU/ml at pH 4 and 3, respectively). Based on its 16s rDNA nucleotide sequence, this FBB72 was found to be closely related to Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG ATTCC53103 with 99% similarity.

Abstract

The target to decrease Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is one of the goals of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG`s) in 2015. Muntigunung`s village has a relatively high infant mortality rate (29.4 / 1,000 live births) compared by the infant mortality rate of Bali Province (8.19/1,000 live births). The area also have geographical conditions and different socio-cultural community with the surrounding area in Bali, so a more specific approach is required in handling the problems in the area. A qualitative study is needed to explore the factors underlying these conditions. The purpose of this study is to examine the behavior of mothers in Cangkeng Hamlet, Muntigunung in prenatal care practice, childbirth and puerperium. This study used the Rapid Assessment Procedure approach. The qualitative method was used in this study by interviewing 24 women participants and 10 man pasticipants. Participants were selected using purposive technique. The information gathered was analyzed using thematic analysis, and used triangulation of resources and method. The results of this study indicate that prenatal care, childbirth process and post-partum care in Cangkeng is still far from clean and safe criteria. Low education levels, lack of knowledge, negative attitudes towards health care, supernatural perception in the healthy concept of illness, difficult access, mother in-laws influence and lack of husband's role to be underlying conditions of infant morbidity and mortality in this region. This study suggests the existence of a partnership between goverment, NGOs or academic institutions in an effort to closer access to the health services such as forming “Posyandu” in this group;  increase knowledge about reproductive health (prenatal care, early sign of pregnancy, clean and save delivery, and infant care)  for  mother and husband.

Abstract

Village AIDS Cadres (KDPA) Program has been conducted in Denpasar district since 2010. Despite the importance of community participation for a successful community based program, no research has been conducted to explore community perception regarding KDPA program. This research is aimed to explore community perceptions regarding acceptability, utilization, and adoption of the KDPA program from community perspective. The design used in this research is descriptive with qualitative data collection method through six focus group discussions in six villages in Denpasar. Data was analysed using thematic analysis.KDPA is well-accepted as it is perceived as an important issue to be tackled in the community. However, many opinions arise concerning who should be given the role "cadre". Lack of program introduction to the community, also high stigma and discrimination resulted in low utilization of the program. Villages with active KDPA have conducted a variety of HIV-related activities rarely carried out by the less active villages. There is Lack of community participation on HIV-related activities. Inequity of access to HIV information exists between adults and teenagers, between men and women, and between the member of traditional and non-traditional hamlets. Program adoption is hampered by the lack of commitment of village authorities and limited resources of KDPA program. The utilization and adoption of KDPA program are sub-optimal. Introduction of KDPA program to the community and provision of program resources should be improved.
