Abstract

The leaves of star fruit plants (Averrhoa carambola) have been traditionally used to cure many diseases, such as hypertension and fever. Besides, the leaves of this plant have also widely been used as the main raw material in lawar (a Balinese traditional food) making. In this research, the methanol extract of this plant leaves was analyzed and identified for active compound contents. The main objective of this research was to investigate types of possible active and applicable compounds contained in such leaves, previously extracted/macerated in methanol solution. Analysis was conducted by applying GC-MS instrumentation using methanol solution. The results showed that 10 possible active and applicable compounds (Butane, 1,1-diethoxy-3 methyl-(CAS)1.1-DII, Dodecanoic acid, methyk ester(CAS) methyl, Dodecanoic acid, methyl ester (CAS) Ethyl Laun, Pentadecanoic acid ethyl ester, Hexadecanoic acid methyl ester (CAS) Methyl pa, OCTADECA 9.12 DIENOIC ACID METHYL, 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester (E)-(CAS), Octadecanoic acid methyl ester, and (E) 9-Octadecanoic acid ethyl ester) were identified in methanol extract of such leaves. Among those compounds, Butane, 1,1-diethoxy-3-methyl and Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester was two most abundance constituents with percentage of peak areas of 35.67% and 26.93%, respectively.

Abstract

Lactobacillus spp. FBB (isolates 60, 72, dan 75), isolated from feces of healthy infants, were tested for resistance in a modified gastric juice in vitro, before being applied in in vivo tests. These isolates were exposed for 7 hours in the modified gastric juice (added with pepsin, pancreatin, and NaDC) with various pH of 2, 3, 4, or 8. Isolates of FBB that showed the most resistant properties in this test was identified by applying molecular method or by sequencing its 16S rDNA. In this test, the FBB isolates showed various degree of resistance to the modified gastric juice conditions. FBB72 was found to be more resistant than the two other isolates. This isolate appeared to have the ability to reach colon (viable when reach colon), although its density was very low (104 CFU/ml and 103 CFU/ml at pH 4 and 3, respectively). Based on its 16s rDNA nucleotide sequence, this FBB72 was found to be closely related to Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG ATTCC53103 with 99% similarity.

Abstract

Sucrose, electrolyte, vitamin, as well as probiotic bacterial contents of palm juice (Arrenga pinnata Merr) areuseful for the maintenance of the healthiness of human body. Due to its low glycemic index, palm sugar issafe to consume and has high potential for use as an alternative companion sugar for diabetes mellituspatients. In Taro village, almost 90% of the people there manage palm sugar plantations, but their ability toprocess and distribute their products is still limited. This program of Science and technology for the Societyaims to improve the quality and value of FEs palm juice by applying revitalization and diversificationmethods. Revitalization was conducted by socializing pre and postharvest preparation techniques andprocedures and the outcomes were measured by questionnaires. Diversification methods were conductedthrough training and advisory preparation of isotonic and probiotic drinks, as well as production of sugarcrystal. The results of this socialization showed that there was an increase in average knowledge of farmersfrom 22.57% (before socialization) to 73.87% (after socialization). Product diversification did not onlyincrease the value of FEs palm juice, but also saved energy and time of processing. As the product wassupported by credible results of laboratory tests, this product is currently marketed in some touristdestinations, such as Tegallalang, Gianyar.

Abstract

Probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amount confer health benefit to the host. Our previous studies revealed that Lactobacillsus spp isolated from infant feces potential to be developed as probiotics. Since the functionality of probiotic is strain specific, it is worth to screen the antioxidant activity of those lactobacilli, which will be developed as antioxidative probiotic. The aim of this study was to screen antioxidant activities of Lactobacillus spp isolated from infant feces. A numbers of 20 Lactobacillus spp strains isolated from infant feces were used in this study. The antioxidant activities was determined in in vitro studies by measuring the lipid peroxidation, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, and ferrous chelating activity. The result showed that inhibitory activity of lipid peroxidation, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, and ferrous chelating activity exerted by of Lactobacillus spp was 10.12 - 83.02%, 16,50-46,73%, and 3.94 - 44.52%, respectively. The Lactobacillus sp FBB 60 and Lactobacillus sp FBB 81 showed the high antioxidant activity compared to the others lactobacilli. The antioxidant activity of Lactobacillus sp FBB 60 were 61,20%, 46,37%, 31,54%  and the activity of Lactobacillus sp FBB 81 were 57,01%, 29,31% 44,52 for the lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and ferrous chelating activity, respectively. This finding implied that the Lactobacillus sp FBB 60 and Lactobacillus sp FBB 81 are promising strain to be developed as antioxidative probiotic.

Abstract

This project investigated the potential of microbial consortia obtained from several sources to reduce or eliminate detergent concentration in the wastes of launderette businesses found in the capital city of Bali. Before being used as active starters, the consortium of microbiota contained in the 3 waste sources was enriched in a medium containing (g/l); 1 glucose, 0.05 K2HPO4, 0.05 KH2PO4, 0.05 (NH4)2[Fe(SO4)2].6H2O, 0.01 MgSO4, 0.01 yeast extract, 1800 mL distilled water, and 200 mL of wastewater of launderette industries. An important parameter used to indicate microbial growth was the level of the volatile solid substrate (VSS) in the enrichment medium. The microbial culture that showed the highest VSS only was further investigated in the main experiments by observing its effectiveness in reducing detergent linear alkyl-benzenesulfonates (LAS) and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of launderette wastes. In this project, microbial consortia developed from detergent-containing launderette wastes were the most active starter to decrease the COD and LAS detergent content following 7 days of exposure. This starter (microbial consortia developed from this launderette waste) showed the highest value of VSS when compared to those collected from other sources, and this was reached on day 4. In the main experiment, 85.5% and 91.9% reduction of LAS and the COD of the wastes, respectively, were observed following exposure of the launderette waste with this culture starter. This indicated that these microbial consortia have the possibility to be developed as a potential starter in larger scales of detergent bioremediation.
