The Indonesian Journal of Occupational Safety and Health is an open access and scientific journal published by the Faculty of Public Health, Universitas Airlangga, and supported by Indonesian Occupational Safety and Health Association (AHKKI) East Java Region, Indonesian Occupational Health Experts Association (PAKKI), and Indonesian Industrial Hygiene Association. The journal aims to publish original articles and review articles on recent developments related to occupational health and safety. Articles were published after a peer-review process with two reviewers and the editor. Since 2017, this journal is published regularly three times a year, in April, August and December. Since 2019, all articles have been published in English. This journal has been certified as a Scientific Journal by the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (RISTEKDIKTI) since October 3, 2022 valid through August 2026 (SINTA 2).

Abstract

 The laboratory is a place of activities for research, education and product quality test. The laboratory is also a place to conduct experiments and research that has a source of danger and can cause work accidents. The research objectives are aware of risks and hazards in the laboratory, hence the need to identify hazards, risk assessments, and risk control. Data collection method used is observasional, based on the analysis of properties and data analysis hence this research including descriptive research. In review from the time of the study including cross sectional. The sample of this research is 6 laboratory personnel in 2 laboratories. The data used are the primary data from the observation, interview and questionnaire and secondary data obtained from the Faculty of Pharmacy. The results of the study can identify as many as 8 hazards. In the risk assessment obtained the highest danger level is high risk. High risk risk level of 3 hazards ie HCl solution spills, nitric acid spills, sulfuric acid spills. This laboratory is still quite dangerous because it is still found high risk. The existing risk control in the laboratory is well implemented and needs to be improved by the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Keywords: hazard identification, risk assessment, risk control

Abstract

Using personal protective equipment (PPE) is the last risk control to protect the workers from occupational safety and health hazards. Applying safety culture through obedience behavior of wearing PPE is important to do as the responsibility of the company to protect its workers from occupational safety and health hazards. The purpose of this research was to analyze factors which have correlation with obedience of wearing PPE in aluminum sulfate unit production PT. Liku Telaga Gresik.This research was analytical observational with a cross sectional design. Subject of this research was total population that consist of 114 workers. Data would be shown in a frequency distribution and cross tabulation afterwards analyzed using statistic chi square.The result of research showed that most of workers obeyed to wear PPE in workplace. Statistic analytical results showed that education (p=0.005; r=0.336) and attitude to the policy (p=0.045; r=0.233) are factors which has correlated with obedience of wearing PPE. Age (p=1), time of work (p=1), knowledge (p=0.483), motivation (p=1), personality (p=0.464), training (p=0.559), communication (p=0.72) and availability of PPE (p=0.652) have no correlation with obedience of wearing PPE.Keywords: behavior of wearing PPE,safety culture, workers in aluminum sulfate unit production

Abstract

Research in the fabrication unit of PT. Bangun Sarana Baja Gresik to determine hazard identification and risk assessment in grinding machine operators. This research uses Systematic Human Error Reduction and Prediction Approach (SHERPA) to determine error in identify hazard consisting of task stage, error mode, error description, consequence analysis and recovery analysis. The AS/NZS 4360: 2004 standard is used to determine the severity, likelihood and risk matrix scales in assessing risks consisting of frequency analysis, severity analysis, and criticality analysis that results in the level of risk at each stage of the task. Population in this research is all grinding machine operator at PT. BangunSarana Baja Gresik which are 60 operators. The sample of this research is as much as 20 grinding machine operatorsfabrication unit of PT. Bangun Sarana Baja Gresik with purposive sampling technique.Hazard identification on the grinding process such as falling material, unstable material condition, cracked grinding wheel, grinding wheel specifications are incompatible with the grinding machine and vice versa, the cable is flaked, melted, even broken, cracked cable terminal, starter (switch on/off) is damaged, sparks, gram sparks, ergonomic body positions, high speed grinding wheels, welding rays, noise and tool hand vibration can result in scratches, abrasions, dislocations, fractures, scratches broken grinding stones, electric shock, pincers, burns, low back pain, sore eyes, hand arm vibration syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome in the worker's body. Risk assessment for low risk task stage is 6 error descriptions which means acceptable risk and no action required, medium risk is 31 error descriptions which means more alert and corrective action is recommended if cost effective, and high risk is 12 error descriptions which means the risk to be aware and there are actions needed to control the risks. Keywords: grinding, hazard identification, risk assessment

Abstract

The farmers' efforts to reduce pests are using pesticides. But, there is an adverse effect farmer’s health, namely pesticide poisoning. Based on Litbang (2004), the incidence of poisoning were about 80% in the developing countries. The purpose of this study is to analyze factors which are affected with cholinesterase levels of rice farmers who sprayed pesticides in Sumberejo, Kecamatan Balong Kabupaten Ponorogo. This study used an observational study design with cross sectional analytic. The sample was all rice farmers who sprayed pesticides in rice plants between 1-7 days before they blood was taken for examination of the enzyme cholinesterase. Total respondents are 40 farmers. The study was in Sumberejo, Kecamatan Balong Kabupaten Ponorogo in July 2013-February 2014. Variables in this study were age, education level, knowledge level, smoking status, used of PPE, work period, the last spraying, direction, time, and duration of spraying, and cholinesterase levels. The primary data was obtained by observation, interview, and spectrophotometer. The technique of data analysis is linier regression test. The results showed that the value of cholinesterase levels is between 5602 U/L-15668 U/L were categorized into moderate and normal. There are no affect characteristic factors (age and work period) on cholinesterase levels. Has affect method of spray (last of spraying) on cholinesterase levels.The conclusion was there is effect between the last of spraying on cholinesterase levels.Keywords: farmers, pesticides, cholinesterase levels

Abstract

The development of science in health world may let use radiation to diagnose a disease. Radiation have some bad effect if excessively exposed, so that management should be create radiographer’s safe behavior to prevent an accident. Management could applied behavior based safety  with a behavioral intervention effort and external factor to encourage radiographer’s safe behavior. The aim of this research was to analyze safe behavior by using behavior based safety approach for radiographer in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. This was a cross sectional study with qualitative approach in order to know about behavioral intervention effort and external factor in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. Respondent of this research was 11 people who all authorized as radiographer in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. The results of this research represent that radiographer’s behavior in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya 100% included in safe category. Management has used behavioral intervention effort properly, by applied activator and consequence to direct and motivate radiographer’s behavior. As discovered that the external factor of instalasi radiodiagnostik has support radiographer to perform safe behavior. The conclusion of this research was radiographer’s safe behavior created by behavioral intervention effort which used activator and consequence to direct and motivate radiographer’s safe behavior and external factor supporting radiographer’s safe behavior in Instalasi Radiodiagnostik Rumah Sakit Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. Keywords: behavioral intervention effort, external factor, safe behavior

Abstract

Working in confined space has very high risks, therefore, one of the hierarchy control to manage identified risk is administrative by implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). The implementation of SOP correlates with the worker behaviors. The purpose of this research is to find out correlation between knowledge, facilities, and supervision to implementation behaviors of sop in confined space. This study is an observational descriptive research using cross sectional approach. The subject is a total population of 19 cleaning workers in Ducting Dust Collector PT. X . The data provided in distribution of frequency tables and was analyzed using crosstabulation followed with Phi and Cramers V Coefficient to see the relation strength. The result of the study shows that most of the workers has a good behavior in implementing the working SOP in  confined space. According to Phi and CramersV Coefficient, Knowledge (0,57) and Facilities (0,57) has a strong relation with the implementation behavior of SOP in confined space. Supervision has no relationship at all with the implementation behavior of working SOP within the confined space. Keywords: confined space, behavior, SOP

Abstract

Based on data from the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration at 2009 construction sector was the highest place occupational injuries. Worker in the process of manufacture shear wall at surabaya apartment  should work at altitude. Working at altitudeis a workthat possess fatal impact in the event of an accident. Thus risk assessment is needed as one way to reduce the number of workplace accidents. The research was a descriptive-observational research usingcross-sectionalstudy design. In this research,risk assessment was used qualitative methods. In the process of  risk assessment, hazard identification performed by using the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and then risk assessment was conducted use a risk matrix, so that the level of risk on the job of making shear wall could be known.The residual risk assessment was performed using guidelines calculation control. The process of making shear wall is divided into four working steps, like installation of concrete bones, installation of form work, casting, and dismantling form work.Result of risk assessment is pure risks of falling from height and strucked by fallen material were 15, hand being wedged were 9, irritation and being hit were 4.There is still a residual risk on falling from height and strucked by fallen material were 3, hazards of hands being wedged were 2, irritation and being hit had residual risk as many as 1. Hazards identified were dropped from height, strucked by fallen materials, wedged, irritated,and being hit. Risk assessment in existencefor dropped from height and strucked by fallen material had a high risk, moderate risk for hands being wedged, being hitand  irritation had a low risk. Abstract

PT PJB UPHT is a company that runs a service in maintaining a unit of power station. The job description includes overhaul that is done manually by its workers. This work that is done manually has a risk of suffering musculoskeletal. The aim of this study is to examine the relation between the risk of ergonomic’s factor with musculoskeletal disorders on overhaul workers in mechanical turbine department. This study is an observational descriptive research. The tool used to measure musculoskeletal disorders was Nordic Body Map (NBM) checklist sheet. In order to measure the work postures of workers, REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) method was employed. Meanwhile, questionnaires were used to know types of work. The total population of this research was 17 workers in mechanical turbine. The data was analyzed using cross tabulation to see the relation strength. The result of this study shows that all overhaul workers in mechanical turbine suffer from musculoskeletal. It can be concluded that the risk of ergonomic’s factor in this case is type of work have strong relation to the suffering of musculoskeletal on workers.Keywords: mechanical turbine workers, musculoskeletal disorders, the risk of ergonomic’s factor

Abstract

Fatigue is a subjective feeling that different for everyone, which leads to loss of efficiency, decreases work capacity, health problem and the body's ability to survive resulting in work accident. The purpose of this research was examining the factors associated with subjective work fatigue on nurses working in dr. Mohamad Soewandhie hospital in Surabaya.This research was an observational study with cross sectional design. The respondents were nurses of emergency, outpatient, and inpatient units in dr.Mohamad Soewandhie hospital. The variables were individual factors were consisting of age, years of working life, nutritional status, gender, and occupational factors were consisting of the workload and the monotony condition of work toward work fatigue. Spearman correlation test was using to test the relationship of each factors, except the relationship of gender and the monotony condition were using  Mann-Whitney.The results showed that the most of the respondentss were 25-30 years old, female, 1-10 years of working life, had better nutritional status, had a moderate heavy workload and felt the monotony condition in her work. The result of fatigue measurement used the checklist which indicated that the most of the respondents experienced no relationship between age, gender, years of working life, workload, and the monotony condition the results also proved the existence of a relationship between nutritional status with p=0,00. It could be concluded that the nutritional status of nurse in dr.Mohamad Soewandhie hospital had a risk of causing fatigue.  Keywords: Individual factors, occupational factors, and work fatigue

Abstract

Work stress occurs when the demands of the job do not match with capabilities, resources, needs and worker discontent. One of the effects of   work stress is increased blood pressure. This study was performed to determine the effect of work stress on the increased of blood pressure in press cutting PT.X. This study is analytical study which is explain the influence work stress to increase of blood pressure. This study using  cross sectional methodology. The population of this study is people who work at press cutting PT. X  who ammount to 40 persons. The sampling technique  is total sampling. In order to knowing the influence of work stress to increase of blood pressure that is using logistic regression and then that is  explanning at naration and tables. The result of this study show that from 40 respondent 35.00 % getting  work stress. Respondent who get work stress and increased the blood preasure is 25.00 % from 40 respondent. And also that is showing mean of blood pressure and increase blood pressure respondent’s who get work stres higher than respondent who do not get work stress. Using logistic regression obtain  Exp(B)= 5.625.  It is showing at worker who get work stress have risk of increase blood pressure higher than do not get work stress. Keyword: increase of blood pressure, press cutting workers, workstress
