Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the quality of multiple-choice items in chemistry for tenth-grade students at SMA Srijaya Negara based on validity, reliability, difficulty level, and discrimination power. The research method employed was descriptive quantitative. The subjects of the research were 10 multiple-choice questions tested on 26 students. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel to calculate validity coefficients, reliability using the Kuder-Richardson 20 (KR-20) method, difficulty level, and discrimination power. The results indicated that 60% of the items were valid; however, the instrument's reliability was low (0.502). The difficulty level of the questions was predominantly in the difficult to very difficult categories (60%), and the discrimination power of the items varied. It was concluded that this evaluation instrument requires significant improvement to enhance its quality as a measurement tool for student learning outcomes.

Abstract

21st century education demands a learning approach that is able to develop students' scientific skills contextually and applicatively. This study aims to describe student activities and analyze the development of students' scientific performance through the application of project-based worksheets in kombucha making activities. The method used is pre-experimental with a one-shot case study design. The research subjects consisted of 35 students. The results of the study showed that the implementation of project-based worksheets was carried out very well, as evidenced by the observation results of 91. Students' ability to complete project-based worksheets is in the very good category, with an average score of 89. The students' scientific performance also showed excellent results, with an average score of 100. These findings suggest the use of project-based worksheets on kombucha making is effective in developing students' scientific performance. Therefore, project-based worksheets can be used as an alternative to innovative learning strategies in developing students' scientific skills in the 21st century learning era.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of gum arabic composition on the solid content of organic ink made from sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan) as a natural dye. The study uses a quantitative method with an experimental approach. The main focus of this research is the solid content test, which is important for determining the quality and durability of organic inks. Variations of gum arabic were used as a binder in the ink formulation, with the tests conducted using screen printing on cotton combed fabric. The results indicate that the lower the composition of gum arabic used, the higher the solid content obtained. The ink with the lowest gum arabic composition (5 grams) produced the highest solid content at 78.79%, compared to 75.00% for 10 grams and 60.00% for 15 grams of gum arabic. Additionally, physical characteristics such as color intensity and viscosity were also influenced by the solid content, with darker colors and thicker textures observed as the solid content increased. These findings contribute to the development of more eco-friendly organic inks with improved stability and performance, supporting the sustainability trend in the printing industry.

Abstract

Batik is a world-recognized cultural heritage of Indonesia, but the batik industry still relies on synthetic dyes that pollute the environment, especially water pollution. This study aims to develop natural black batik ink from coconut fibre through pyrolysis and analyse its colour density. The process is carried out by heating coconut fibre at 150-250°C to produce charcoal, which is then pulverized into pigments. The pigments were mixed with distilled water (variation of 1-7 g pigment and 6-12 mL distilled water) and tested for density using a spectrodensitometer. The results showed that the formulation of 6 grams of pigment and 11 mL of distilled water produced the highest concentration (2.68). The average concentration of all samples reached 2.57, indicating the consistency of pigment quality. This study proves that the ratio of pigment and solvent affects colour density, while providing an environmentally friendly solution by utilizing coconut fibre waste as a natural dye with economic value.

Abstract

Tobacco smoking is known to have adverse health effects, including an increased risk of cancer , cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders. These health risks are largely attributed to the presence of toxic compounds in tobacco smoke, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and cyanide, both of which are carcinogenic. One potential method to mitigate these harmful effects is by using adsorbent materials, such as polyurethane foam, as smoke filters. This study aims to: (1) analyze the characteristics of polyurethane foam modified with aluminum metal, (2) evaluate the adsorption capability of the material against carcinogenic compounds in cigarette smoke using GC-MS analysis, and (3) determine the optimal adsorbent composition for maximum foam performance. Material characterization was conducted using FTIR to identify functional groups, swelling degree tests to assess water absorption capacity, SEM-EDX to examine surface morphology and aluminum distribution, and GC-MS to identify the carcinogenic compounds adsorbed. FTIR analysis revealed the presence of N-H, C-H, C=O, and C-C functional groups in the polyurethane structure. The swelling degree test showed a positive result, indicating good water absorption ability. SEM-EDX analysis demonstrated that aluminum particles were successfully distributed within the foam’s pores, resulting in smaller pore sizes. Furthermore, GC-MS results confirmed the adsorption of several carcinogenic compounds, including pyridine, eugenol, and benzenamine. These findings suggest that aluminum-modified polyurethane foam has the potential to serve as an effective filtering material to reduce exposure to toxic compounds in tobacco smoke.
