Abstract

This study is aimed to identify the kinds, functions, and meanings of rhetorical schemes applied in Obama’s speech. The data of this study were taken by documentation method and note-taking technique from the winning speech delivered by Barack Obama on November, 4th 2008 at Grant Park in Chicago. The video is uploaded by Marc Schulz on October, 19th 2012 in YouTube and its transcript is available on ABC news (internet). In addition, the data were analyzed descriptive qualitatively using Holman’s theory about rhetorical devices (1960). This study revealed that there are three schemes in rhetorical devices namely phonological, morphological, and syntactical applied by Barack Obama. Furthermore, two functions applied are to give vivid example and to emphasize points. The meanings from applied rhetorical schemes are constructed based on the reference Obama does in his speech towards socio-historical events in America.

Abstract

Book prohibition in Indonesia has been going on since the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soekarno. This prohibition continued in greater quality and quantity during the reign of the second President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto. In the reform era, when freedom of expression found its space, book prohibition continued. This article examines the historical and cultural responsibility behind book banning. How about the prohibition of books in the Soekarno, Suharto era, and the reform era. What are the pros and cons that occur, as well as what solutions satisfy various parties. The method used is the library method, by reading, inputting data, and studying based on library data. This article explains that the author of the book must be responsible for the content of his writing. Themes such as the Movement of the PKI are sensitive themes, therefore writers must have historical and cultural awareness. Likewise, the government is expected to be able to review a book, and not to unilaterally freeze or ban it. Bringing a book into the realm of law is supported by the necessary evidence, so that all parties get justice based on the law, history and culture of the nation for the unity of the Republic of Indonesia based on the pillars of development and survival as a nation.

Abstract

A sentence structure involves the packaging of meaning. Words and their order decide the meaning of a sentence conveyed. This study discussed two points of problems. The first one is locative inversion structure in sentences taken from Corpus of Contemporary American English. The other problem is the constraints of locative inversion in the English grammar. The problems are discussed based on the theory of inversion by Hewings (2005). Method used to collect the data was documentation method. The analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative method. The result of the analysis is shown using informal method. As results, this study shows that locative inversion structure is different from canonical structures. It has a distinct feature contrasting it with canonical structure. It also has several constraints regarding subject, predicate, and salient information affecting its formation.

Abstract

This study is entitled The Survival of Sanglah Traditional Market in the Middle of the Effect of Modern Markets in Denpasar in 2000-2018. Sanglah Market is surrounded by many modern markets. Economic developments that occur at this time lead to competition between the Sanglah market and the modern market in Denpasar. The research method used is the historical research method which consists of four stages, namely heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. The results of this study indicate that the Sanglah market is one of the engines of economic growth for the City of Denpasar. The rise of the development of modern markets in the city of Denpasar requires traders in the Sanglah market to innovate more in maintaining their existence. The many modern markets in Denpasar City have their own impact on traders in the Sanglah market both economically and socially, such as the decline in the income of traders, besides that the modern market also impacts on people's lifestyles.
