Abstract

Piranha (Pygosentrus nattereri) is a fish that has been conserved at Conservation Center of Bali Safari and Marine Park. In May 2012 there was a case that twelve Piranhas suffered from illness and two of them died without any specific clinical signs. The dead Piranhas were necropsied and the tissues or parts of organs were collected for microbial examination interests. Spesies specific bacterial examination was also included using Microgen GNA TM + B-ID system test The bacterial examination found that the fishes were infected by Aeromonas hydropila and Aeromonas veronii. Further examination about antibiotic resistance tests showed that those Aeromonas spp were resistant to chloramphenicol and a combination of trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole. It can be suggested that, next, the usage of other antibiotics is strongly recommended for the case of Piranha infected by Aeromonas spp at Bali Safari and Marine Park.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to know the resistant pattern of Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) isolated from wolf fish (Hoplias malabaricus) to antibiotics in Bali Safari and Marine Park. S. typhi was isolated from fecal swab collected from the illness fish. The S. typhi was confirmed with MicrogenTM GN A ID test’s method. The antibiotic sensitivity of the S. typhi was tested using streptomycin, gentamicin, penicillin, vancomycin, and chloramphenicol according to the Kirby bouer method. The results showed that the isolate of S. typhi was resistant to penicillin and vancomycin, but sensitive to streptomycin, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol.

Abstract

Genomic selection has a high potency to improve the genetic quality of Bali cattle. In effort to find out a molecular marker or DNA segment which is linked with a certain phenotype, we examined the association between BoLa-DRB3 microsatellite polymorphism and dam body weight and birth weight of calves in Bali cattle. A total of 40 dams from Abuan Village, the District of Susut was investigated. The total DNA was extracted with QIAamp DNA blood mini kit. The locus was amplified using PCR technique with a 54OC annealing temperature.. Alleles were separated through PAGE 6%, and visualized with silver staining. We found 10 alleles which their length varied from 145 bp to 233 bp. Allele 195 had the highest frequency that was 35.0%. The HE, HO, PIC were 0.821, 0.875, and 0.791 consecutively. Statistical analysis showed that the polymorphism of DRB3 microsatellite had a marginally significant association (p < 0.1) to the dam body weight. However, it had no significant association to the birth weight of the calves. The results of the research reflect that the DRB3-BoLA gene has a weak potency in controlling the body weight.

Abstract

Live Bird Market (LBM) has a high potential for spreading Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) between fowls or from fowl to human. Up to now, a dinamic of avian flue incidents at many LBMs in Bali has not been reported. This research aimed to reveal a dynamic of seroprevalences of avian influenza in ducks at Beringkit (Badung) and Galiran (Kelungkung) LBMs. A total of 35 duck blood samples was collected from each of LBMs. Sampling was conducted monthly from March to August, 2012 . AIV antibody of duck serum was measured using Rapid Hemagglutination Inhibition (Rapid HI) test. Seroprevalence differences were analyzes with Chi-square (?2) Nonparametric statistical test. The results showed that seroprevalences of AIV H5 in ducks at Beringkit and Galiran LBMs were very high, ranged from 68.6% to 100% and 65.7% to 97.1% respectively. A Dynamic of AIV H5 seroprevalences in ducks at Beringkit and Galiran LBM had a similar pattern, except in July 2012. This indicates that VAI H5 has been circulating for a long time and has been to be an endemic virus infection in ducks at LBMs in Bali. It can be suggested that an Avian Influenza Virus monitoring should be done continuously over a long period.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine Bioactivity of Aloe vera gel on gonad of male white rats (Rattus norvegicus). This research used complately random design, with three treatments namely T0, received placebo as a control; T1, received gel of Aloe vera 300 mg/kg body weight orally; and T2, received gel of Aloe vera 400 mg/kg body weight orally. Aloe vera gel was administrated every day for 21 days. All the treatments repeated three times, and each experimental unit used one white rat. Data found was analyzed using one way of Anova, and the Least Significant Differences (LSD) Test was applied for further analysis. Results showed that Aloe vera gel administration with a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight had effected significantly on the number of spermatogonia cells, live-daed rasio of spermatozoa, and the percentage of sperm abnormality. The result of the research indicates that Aloe vera gel is potentially cytotoxic to testes cells, and so, it’has a high possibilities as an alternative herbal contraceptive agent for animals

Abstract

The study aimed to determine seroprevalence of Toxoplasmosis in goats sloughtered at Kampung Jawa, Denpasar, Bali and to evaluate their pathogenicities through bioassay in cats. One hundred serums and meats of goats were collected. Anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibody was determined using Indirect Haemaglutination (IHA) test. The pathogenicity bioassay of Toxoplasma gondii was carried out through inoculating the meats of goats which had seropositive of Toxoplasma gondii to the cats. The pathogenicity was evaluated using the intensity of oocyte sheding from the cats. The result showed that the seroprevalence of Toxoplasmosis was 46%. There was not significant difference between pathogenicity of Toxoplasma gondii in cat inoculated with meat of goat which had a high and low titer of antibody against Toxoplasma gondii.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the sensitivity pattern of E. coli isolated from pigs with colibacillosis to antibiotics. The total of 21 fecal samples was collected from pigs with white scour at the District of Kerambitan and Tabanan, the Regency of Tabanan, Bali. The isolation and identification of pathogenic E coli used Sheep Blood Agar medium, and serotype grouping of those bacteria was designated through agglutination test using serum’s antibody Polyvalent 1-5 and 6-11. The pathogenic E. coli found was then examined it`s own resistance to streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole, gentamicin, cefotaxime, and chloramphenicol according to Kirby Bouer method. The result showed that the isolates of E. coli polyvalent 1-5 were resistant to streptomycin and chloramphenicol, whereas that of polyvalent 6-11 was resistant to sulfamethoxazole, gentamicin, streptomycin and chloramphenicol.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to measure the levels of estrogen and the onset of estrous after administration of Buserelin on bali cattle experiencing anestrous postpartum due to ovarian hypofunction. This research used twenty seven bali cattles which were divided evenly into three groups of treatment, namely group-one as control group (P0, without treatment), group-two, receiving a single injection of Buserelin at dose of 0.02 mg (P1) and group three, receiving repeated injection of Buserelin at dose of 0.02 mg at 24 hours interval (P3). Serum estrogen levels were measured at a time off before estrous, a time of estrous, and five days after the onset of estrous using ELISA method. Data were analyzed using statistical analysis of variance and a Duncan’s Multiple Range Test for a further analysis. The results showed that at the stage of estrous, the estrogen level of P0 was lower significantly (p<0.05) than two others treatments (P1 and P2), but those of P1 and P2 were statistically the same (p>0.05). The onset of estrous on P2 was shorter than those of P1 (p<0.05). It can be concluded that the administration of Buserelin can trigger an estrous on Bali cattle that experiencing anestrous postpartum due to ovarian hypofunction and repeated administrations of Buserelin can shorten the onset of estrous.
