Abstract

Lesson study has commonly three stages in the implementation. They are plan, do, and see. In the process, a relationship occurs between people who are involved in it. They are the teachers, students, and observers. This research focuses about the positive relation happened between teachers and observers. Positive relation between people who are involved in learning process could improve classroom quality. The positive relation is named mutualism. In biological term, mutualism is when two organisms of different species "work together", each benefiting from the relationship. Meaning contained in the term is used by the researcher to indicate a relationship that occurs in the lesson study process. This research aims at finding out the mutualism in lesson study, especially the mutualism between teachers and students. The method used in this research was qualitative method. The research took place at English Education Study Program, Cokroaminoto Palopo University, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Teachers and students in this institution were taken as the participants of the research. Data gained through classroom observation and focus group interview. The result of the research shows that mutualism happens between teachers and observers.

Abstract

This thesis aimed at finding out the application of Directed Reading Thinking Activity strategy in improving the students reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Palopo. This research applied pre-experimental design and it was conducted for four meetings through lesson study activity in treatment process. The population of this research is 272 students. In determining the sample, the researcher used random sampling technique to choose sample and took class IIA consisted of 30 students. The instrument used to collect the data was narrative text. To collect the data the researcher used SPSS version 20. The researcher concluded that the application of Directed Reading Thinking Activity Strategy can improve students reading comprehension. It is proven by the significant difference between the students mean score in pretest and posttest. In pretest, the students mean score is 71.33 and the students mean score in posttest is 80.40. The researcher also finds that the P-value is 0.00 and the ? I s 0.05, therefore P< ? (0.00< 0.05). It is proven that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. It means that used directed reading thinking activity strategy can improve students reading comprehension.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find out significant correlation between reading interest through the students reading comprehension. In this research, the researcher used quantitative method by Pearson correlation product moment. There are four variables in this research. Students interest as prediction variable and Reading comprehension as criterion variable, the technique of collecting data was by using a questionnaire and test. The questionnaire consists of 20 items and 46 items of reading comprehension. The object of study is 30 students from class D at the third semester. After getting the score of the students interest and reading comprehension, the data were statistically computed to find out the correlation between those variables. From the calculation by using product moment formula, it was found out that the mean scores of the students interest 75.53. The mean of the scores of the students reading comprehension is 5.53. The result of applying the variable rx1y (ro) distribution shows that the coefficient correlation between students interest and reading comprehension is 0.919 or 91.9% means that there was very strong correlation. The degree of significance 5% is 0,000. It means p is smaller than 0.05 (0.05 < 0.000). So, alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. The conclusion of this research is there is a significant correlation between students interest and their reading comprehension.

The writer assumed that the learning process was not maximal. For that reason, in this present research, the writer had done a research which aims at improving students achievement in English. The model which is used is Lesson Study (LS), considering that FKIP Cokroaminoto Palopo University has gotten Hibah Lesson Study from Dikti, so the writer applied this model in another faculty, i.e. Faculty of Computer Technique at Informatics Engineering Study Program. The aim of the research is to find out the effectiveness of LS in improving students achievement in English. The research applied a pre-experimental method with pretest-treatment-posttest design. The population is the second semester students of Informatics Engineering Study Program of Cokroaminoto Palopo University. The samples are 40 students from the total population of 388 students. The instrument of the research is general English test for pretest and posttest. For Lesson Study, the steps which were conducted are Plan, Do, and See. SPSS calculation and some of Gays formula were used to analyze the data. Based on research result, it can be concluded that Lesson Study effectively improved Informatics Engineering students achievement in English. It can be seen from the calculation of students mean score. At pretest, students mean score is 42.3 which is at poor category, while in posttest the students mean score is 68.1 which is at fairly good category.

Abstract

Collaborative learning is an umbrella term for a variety of educational approaches involving joint intellectual effort by students, or students and teachers together. Usually, students are working in groups of two or more, mutually searching for understanding, solutions, or meanings, or creating a product. Collaborative learning activities vary widely, but most center on students exploration or application of the course material, not simply the teachers presentation or explication of it. Collaborative learning represents a significant shift away from the typical teacher centered or lecture-centered milieu in college classrooms. The writing descriptive text can be easy by using collaborative learning since the share and peer feedback during the learning writing process.
