Abstract

This study aimed to investigate students’ perceptions and preferences of video use as a replacement for traditional lecture during e-learning in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study used two-staged mixed-method. The design of this study was sequential explanatory. This study used 30 closed-ended questionnaires and focus group discussions as the instrument to gain a rich understanding of students’ video experiences, perceptions and preferences. Data were collected from 108 EFL students through an online questionnaire using Google form and face-to-face focus group discussion. Results show that (1) Most of students showed positive perceptions of the use of video as a replacement for traditional lecture during e-learning in times of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It can be seen from the questionnaire results that 83.3% of students showed positive perception. (2) Students mostly preferred video-based learning if there is post-videos watching activities such as reviewing, re-explaining, question and answer, etc. Furthermore, the types of videos they preferred are instructor-created videos and animation videos from YouTube

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the cooperative principle using the types of maxims. The main theory used in this study purposed by Grice (1975) the cooperative principle. And for the research design this study applied the descriptive qualitative as the method. As for collecting the data the researcher applied the theory of observational method and non-participatory technique by (Sudaryanto, 2015). Moreover, in analyzing the data the method of pragmatic identity and the technique pragmatic competence- in equalizing were used in this study. And all of the theories were applied to the movie titled “Willoughbys”. The findings of this study indicated that the characters in the film adopted four types of maxims they are maxims of quality, maxims of quantity, maxims of relation, and maxims of manner. The maxims of quality showed as the most frequent types, appearing six times. And the quantity maxims occurred four times. The relation maxims occurred four times. Finally, the maxims of manner emerged as the least number of maxims types, with three appearances.Keywords: cooperative principle, maxim, pragmatics

Abstract

This research aimed to discover the characteristics of formal and informal talks of lecturers in EFL classroom. This research was conducted in qualitative design. Furthermore, the researcher applied discourse analysis under the study of sociolinguistics as an approach to analyze the language, writing, speech, and conversation (verbal and nonverbal) that was appropriate with the purpose of this research. In order to get the data, the researcher did observation and recording. Lastly, the result of the data analysis was presented in description of words, not number. The research was conducted at English Study Program of IAIN Bone.The result shows that the lecturers used formal and informal language. However, the lecturers used formal talk dominantly rather than the informal talk. The characteristic of formal talk which was frequently used by teacher was full form. The teacher frequently used this characteristic in asking question. Whereas informal talk happened frequently when teacher gave explanation particularly in explaining the material. The formal talks which occurred in EFL classroom particularly in student talk consist of four characteristics. They were neutral lexis, full form, politeness phenomena, careful turn taking and title in which using title mostly occurred in interaction among teacher and students. The informal talks which occurred in EFL classroom particularly in student talks were colloquial lexis, interruption/overlapping, first name and nickname, typical mood choice and modal for probability.

Abstract

The development of students’ reading comprehension can be reached by implementing formative assessment during the reading instruction so that the teachers are able to monitor students’ reading comprehension progress and make a development. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the teachers faced a new learning situation namely online learning. However, conducting formative assessment for assessing students’ reading comprehension has to be conducted constantly. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the formative assessments practices by the teachers for assessing students’ reading comprehension in online learning, include the plan and its implementations. The implementations of FA were gained from teachers’ point of view. The study involved four junior high school English teachers at SMPN 7 Denpasar. The design of the study was qualitative study. The data were collected by using three methods namely document analysis, survey, and interview. The result of the study showed that there were several formative assessment methods that were planned and implemented by teachers. Those methods were categorized into self-assessment, peer-assessment, teacher-feedback, sharing an understanding of formative assessment goals, and varied assessment methods.

Abstract

A conversation is not all about a social activity that involves two people or more who chatter on anything. It has been regulated in the basic principles of spoken language in linguistics. The approach to analyzing the rules of interactive spoken language is mainly attached to the scope of conversation analysis which is commonly known as turn-taking. This research presents the appliance of turn-taking strategies and the patterns of turn-in-talk on THE BOYZ podcast conducted by bilingual speakers, which refers to the theory from Sacks et al. (1974). Furthermore, this study aims to identify the implication of language alternation usage by bilingual speakers in the conversation using the bilingual communication theory proposed by Mahecha and Auer (1986). The data are collectively derived from the utterances of the interview session transcribed on the DIVE Studios Podcasts' YouTube channel. The results revealed the parties on the podcast are more likely to use adjacency pairs among the types of turn-taking strategies and self-selection distribution of turn-allocation in the entire conversation. A genuine intent by bilingual speakers to shift the language within the discussion is to create an apparent approval or agreement and validation.

Abstract

Hedges are linguistics features that were previously considered by some researchers as the characterization of women's speech to show hesitation and uncertainty of the speech regarding the character of discussion and the sensitivity of the questions. However, this claim was remain debatable by another researcher since the use of hedges cannot be correlated to any specific gender. This study was conducted to reveal the use of hedges can also be employed by males in an informal daily conversation, discussing lights topic and questions that often appear. The conducted study was supported by the transcription from the recorded online meeting with males native and non-native English speakers. The transcribed recorded online meeting was useful to examine the hedges as the participants' expressions in the discussion. The results of the study showed that males also utilized hedges in an informal discussion, and the most frequent one is verbal filler will. The hedges uttered by both males native and non-native were various such as to give them chance to think, to reduce the impact delivered, self-disclosure, and appraise someone's idea. The findings also found that the use of hedges by males in casual daily conversation is normal, in regard to saving the speaker's name toward the interlocutor when discussing a sensitive topic or answering a sensitive question.

Abstract

This study investigated language learning strategies used by medical students and its relation to students’ English proficiency. The study was conducted at Universitas Muhammadiyah Lamongan, the participant involved in this study were 74 medical students from three different departments; physiotherapy, midwifery, and pharmacy.  The language learning strategies data were obtained from the Oxford’s Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), while the English proficiency level was obtained from the students’ EPT scores. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS – descriptive statistics and Pearson Correlation. The findings revealed that the participants frequently used strategies were memory strategies by the mean of 3.11, followed by metacognitive strategies at 3.06, cognitive strategies at 2.97, social strategies at 2.95, compensation strategies at 2.94, and affective strategies at 2.91.  Meanwhile, the Pearson Correlation or ŕ value was .054 ≤ 0.05, and the sig. (2 tailed) value was .064 ≥ 0.05. It can be concluded that there was no interrelation between the use of language learning strategies and students’ English proficiency. Therefore, students’ English proficiency does not affect language learning strategies preference. The findings of this current study might be useful as input for English teachers and learners to build an effective classroom environment.

Abstract

Anxiety has been considered as one of the obstacles in learning English and a common issue in the EFL teaching and learning. In speaking, it also debilitates the opportunity of English Foreign Language (EFL) students to speak English. Several studies have been conducted to discover the causes and straegies to overcome them in traditional classroom. To date, not many studies have focused on students’ anxiety in online learning. Therefore, this study was designed to reveal the causal factors of the students’ speaking anxiety and strategies to overcome them during online learning at Islamic senior secondary school setting. The study employed narrative inquiry approach and used interview as the main instrument of data collection. Four students of Islamic Senior Secondary School (MAN) Insan Cendekia Gowa whom selected to be the participants of the study using purposive sampling technique. The result of this study establishes two main findings. Firstly, the causal factors of students' speaking anxiety during online learning were divided into internal and external factors. The internal factors consisted  of lack of confidence, shyness, fear of making mistake, and feeling insecure. The external factors consisted of lack of preparation, limited vocabulary, friends or classmates, embarrassment, teachers’ teaching style. The study found that the external factors are indicated as the most dominant causes of students' speaking anxiety. Furthermore, the study highlights several strategies used by the students to overcome their speaking anxiety, namely: good preparation (lecture note), peer seeking, keeping silent or calm, practice speaking at home, turning the camera off, using ‘google translator’, and limiting speaking duration.

Abstract

Cultural differences make Indonesian students have the opportunity experienced culture shock. This study aims to find the dimension and the factors that affect of culture shock experienced by Indonesia students in the U.S. This study used a qualitative method with Ward’s theory about the dimension of culture shock and Rajasekar’s categories of factor caused by culture shock. The finding of this research found that there are three dimensions experienced by Indonesian students, namely affective dimension which the students experienced anxiety or frightness while in the host culture, behavior dimension which the students experienced rules or habits error while in the host culture, and cognitive dimension which the students create their social identification because of different culture. There are 11 categories that affect culture shock experienced, those are communication, language, dress, individualism, food, structure, perceptions, religion, time orientation, tradition, and weather.

Abstract

The study aimed to find out the types of online instructional strategies, Lecturer’s perception, how to conduct online speaking class, the impact of online instructional strategies on students speaking activity and Lecturer’s online instructional strategies implementation. The research was conducted through qualitative research with descriptive analysis at IAIN Palopo. The result revealed that direct instruction, indirect instruction, ADDIE Model and Mahmood’s strategy were the types of online instructional strategies were applied in English speaking class, meanwhile, Lecturer’s perception were classified into three aspects: place of origin of the students, poverty issues, and students’ attitude toward online learning. To conduct English speaking class Lecturer utilized online learning platform. The findings revealed there were seven students faced technical problems on online learning, and it was contrasting with other thirteen students. Poverty issues, internet connectivity, neglected area, limitation time, lack of infrastructural development and lack of students’ motivation were technical problems which impacted online learning on English speaking class at IAIN Palopo.
