Abstract

Indonesia needs to adopt the agricultural technique that gives high production to fulfill the need of its population. Automatic fertilizing with a drip irrigation system is one of the agricultural technologies to boost yield. Using this fertigation technology involves giving specific nutrients to plants based on their demands to conserve resource inputs. The potential for developing lettuce as an export commodity is highly encouraging. This study was to build an automatic fertigation device that includes a drip irrigation system, environmental management and to decide whether to test the device on green lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The research results are anticipated to be adopted and expanded in the community. The research began with designing and preparing instruments and materials; testing each instrument element; construction and programming; system testing tools; and evaluating lettuce plants. This instrument employs sensor components, microcontrollers, and actuators and is based on the IoT (Internet of Things). The results showed that the apparatus could function effectively following the program's specifications. However, the sensor could perform the tool's performance with high accuracy and be tracked by an Android smartphone. Testing the apparatus on lettuce plants showed that the plant tended to improve its height and yield in terms of fresh weight and economic weight compared to the plant watered manually. Moreover, there was less variation in the number of leaves of the plant.

Abstract

Mangosteen is a tropical fruit with a high potential to be an export commodity, but the problem is that it quickly declines in quality due to its postharvest physiological process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of ethanol vapor treatment and chitosan coating in slowing down quality deterioration and extending the shelf life of mangosteen fruit. Analysis used a factorial completely randomized design with two treatment factors. The first factor was giving ethanol vapor from the evaporation of ethanol solution with concentrations of 0%, 5%, and 10%; and the second factor was chitosan coating withconcentrations of 0%, 1.25%, and 1.5%. The parameters were weight loss, the intensity of damage, color difference, fruit hardness, total acid value, total dissolved solids, and organoleptic tests on the color of the flesh, the flesh taste, and the flesh aroma. Observations were for 25 days of storage at room temperature (28- 31ºC). The results showed that the single application of ethanol vapor had a significant effect on weight loss, while the single chitosan coating had a significant effect on the total acid and total dissolved solids. The ethanol vapor and chitosan coating interaction had a significant effect on weight loss, the intensity of damage, color difference, fruit hardness, and organoleptic the flesh color, flesh taste, and the aroma of the flesh. Treatment E2C1 was the best combination because able to maintain the quality and shelf life of mangosteen fruit up to 10 days. It had the lowest value of changes in the observed parameters such as weight loss, the intensity of damage, color difference, fruit hardness, and the highest organoleptic values for color, taste, and aroma of fruit flesh. The E2C1 treatment was able to maintain the visual appearance of the fruit until the 10th day based on fruit color, texture, and damage such as fruit rot.

Abstract

Research had been carried out to modify polystyrene box as fresh cabbage delivery box using dry ice as a cooling medium. The research aims were to find out the most suitable model box to maintain the freshness of the vegetables. Modified polystyrene box was made by separating the box into two compartments, one compartment for placing dry ice, and another compartment for storing the fresh cabbage. The box was modified into five types which consisted of two types of the box where the cooling medium was placed below the fresh vegetable, while for the rest, the cooling medium was placed above the vegetable. The tests were performed for 7 hours with the hourly observation that consisted of the temperature surrounding the model box, temperature inside the box, and temperature of the center of the fresh cabbage. Other conducted measurements were the weight of dry ice used during cold storage, weight loss of fresh cabbage, visual observation on the deterioration of the fresh cabbage, and energy equilibrium calculation. Placing dry ice below the fresh cabbage caused the center temperature of the fresh cabbage to far above the recommended storing temperature, 0oC, while placing the cooling medium above the vegetable gave a negative impact on the vegetable where the center temperature of the fresh cabbage was below 0oC for the two types of model boxes, except for the fifth type box where dry ice was placed in a basin made of zink plate. Based on energy calculation it was revealed that almost more than 75% of cooling energy was used to overcome the surrounding cooling load. It was found that the most suitable model box for storing the fresh cabbage was the fifth type.
