Abstract

In most areas of East Java, the economic development still relies on the agricultural sector. Meanwihle, since 2008, agroindustry has grown fast in East Java. This situation should have impact towards higher economic growth in lieu with lower regional development disparity, or speed of convergence improvment. However, the reality seems to be different, where the level of regional development inequality in East Java is still far above the National level. Thus, this study aims to estimate the magnitude of agroindustry in the acceleration of convergence in East Java. This study uses least squares and spatial models as estimation methods as well as the Barro convergence model as the basis of model analysis. The data used is panel data from 38 regions from 2010 to 2019. The estimation results show that agroindustry development has played a role in accelerating convergence improvement, but not too big. One reason is that there is still no spillover effect arising from agroindustry development.

Abstract

Great Financial Crisis 2008 and the COVID-19 crisis are two world crises that happened in the last 20 years, yet there’s so little literature that connects the sentiment of fear to the bond market. This study focuses on analyzing the impact of the sentiment of fear caused by the two crises that occurred in Indonesia, namely the Great Financial Crisis in 2008 and the COVID-19 Pandemic, along with macroeconomic factors to 10-year Indonesian government bond yields using VECM methods. The results showed that only the Federal Reserve interest rate has a significant impact on the government bond yield in both crises, while the rest is not significant. This result shows that in both crises, the Indonesian government bond yield was affected by only the Federal Reserve’s reaction to the crises, while not considering how both crises could cause negative sentiment from the investors.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the economy both nationally and nationally. Economic activity slowed down, many businesses closed their businesses, and there was an increase in the poor. The government is conducting fiscal interventions to overcome the impact of the pandemic both on supply and demand. The intervention is expected to keep the economy growing despite being thin. East Java Province had achievements in reducing poverty until the end of 2019; after the pandemic, poverty increased significantly at the end of 2021. This condition is challenging for the Provincial Government and the City / Regency Government in East Java. Therefore, this study analyzes the determinants of poverty in East Java after the pandemic. Data was sourced from the Statistic Indonesia of East Java for 2018-2021. Using a regression of panel data (fixed effect model), we found that the human development index reduced poverty. On the contrary, the Covid pandemic, this ratio, and economic growth positively impact poverty. The implications of the findings suggest the need for comprehensive economic and macro-social policies so that the poverty rate in East Java can be reduced.
