Abstract

This paper is library research attempting to explore the way to maintain the local identity in globalization for Indonesian particularly their national religious identity. Taking and tracking documents in the form of data relating to the issues of globalization, religious identity, and  Pancasila and adopting the concept of grounded globalism by James L. Peacock which affirms and seeks embodied connectedness to locale, this paper shares the perspective that Pancasila is still qualified and deserve to be used as a basic foundation to maintain and strengthen the national religious identity of the Indonesian people in the global era. Indonesia does not need to be transformed by global identity. Indonesia has already had its own national religious identity which is global. The five principles of Pancasila need to be actualized as the ground and cultural traits of their global identity. By grounding global identity on Pancasila, Indonesians can enjoy globalization without losing its national identity.

The students have been very enthusiastic towards the teaching technique. Their score in writing increased from pre-test to the end of cycle II.  The result of pre-test showed that the average was 68. From 34 students in the class, only 7 students got the score   above 79 and 27 students got the score bellow 79. In addition, in cycle I, the students who got the score above Minimum Mastery Criteria were 12 or 35, 29% and those who got below the Minimum Mastery Criteria that were 22 or 69, 71%.  The average was 75. Finally, in cycle II, the students who got score above Minimum Mastery Criteria were 30 or 88. 24% and those who got below Minimum Mastery Criteria were 4 or 11. 76%.  The average score was 81.32. Literary Criticism subject was chosen as the object of the current study, considering that the students in enrolling the subject were not merely introduced to literature, but also were led to be able to evaluate, describe, and analyze literary works. The study revealed some findings. Firstly, Reader-response prompts were helpful in giving aids to the students that they give the students idea how to write down their ideas and thoughts in minds. However, as the second finding, most students tend to keep their focus on the feeling section. Some of them were proven to be more critical by questioning things happened in the stories, yet they still had no idea how to analyze and evaluate the questions they had. The last finding, the writer noticed that none of the students relate their reflective essays to relevant literature to support their opinion. The writer considered that this occurred due to their lack of knowledge and practice of critical thinking and critical writing.

Abstract

This paper explores the communication needs of students of English Department, Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (ED UMM) as well as investigates the obstacles in fulfilling their needs. Collecting and analysing data on needs allows teachers to analyse the gap between what has been done and what needs to be done. Accordingly, a Needs Analysis can support the development and implementation of language policies at both macro and micro levels, with far-reaching consequences. The research participants were ED UMM students who are still attending speaking subjects and those who have already completed the speaking subjects. Two stages of data collections: Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and Questionnaire were employed. In FGD, the participants were selected purposively whereas convenience sampling was employed to get the participants for questionnaires. As many as 475 students or equal to 60 % of ED students enrolled at English Department filled in the questionnaires. The findings indicate that to be able to speak in English was students first priority skill to master due to several reasons. To achieve the goals, improving teaching capacity and evaluating institutional policies are required.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing reflection of the use of prezi as instructional media for teaching English in Indonesian context. Prezi is presentation software which is not commonly used in Indonesia producing a cloud-based presentation and storytelling tool for presenting ideas on a virtual canvas. This study is conducted based on the previous survey study done by Fox et.al (2016) finding that all of the students in their study preferred prezi rather than power point as a presentation tool in the areas of ease of use, fun to use, text, graphics, and usage in future presentations. However, this study has a purpose to reflect the student-teacher’s experience when using prezi in teaching English. To obtain the data, journal writing and self-observation by using video recording are used. It deeply investigates: 1) how he creates prezi for teaching English and 2) challenges and benefits of using it for teaching. The finding revealed that prezi is a powerful tool attracting the students’ attention which creates better classroom atmosphere and meaningful learning experience. On the other hand, it encourages the teacher to have high access of internet and be creative on making prezi presentation.

Abstract

The use of L1 in L2 classes has long been a controversy. Krashen (1981) proposes that to succeed in L2 learning, L2 should be exposed extensively. Furthemore, he asserts that failure in L2 exposure is caused by available access to use L1. In contrast with Krashen’s theory, numerous researchers point out that the use of L1 in L2 classess turns out to be beneficial. According to Cook (2001) and Tang (2002), L2 learning and comprehension increase when L1 is used. This research aimed to reveal the role of L1 (Bahasa Indonesia) by both teachers and learners in English classrooms at tertiary level. The data were obtained from questionnaires distributed to 158 students and 23 teachers at a private university in Yogyakarta. Interviews were also conducted to 5 teachers. The findings show that  59% students and 70% teachers stated that L1 should be used in their class. 87% students stated that L1 should be used during explanation of difficult concepts of L2, and this is in line with 96% teachers who admitted that they use L1 when explaining difficult concepts. 40% students and 61% teachers were quite certain that using L1 in an English class helps learners ‘ learning process. L1 use is also contributive in lowering learners’ affective filter as it will make them more secure, comfortable, and eventually confident to use the target language. The overall findings suggest that L1 should be used in L2 classess, since its absence may hinder learners’ learning process.
