The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of Google Docs improved the students? writing skill and to find out the students? interest in learning writing by using Google Docs. This research applied a quasi-experimental design with an experimental class and a control class. The procedure of collecting data involved administering a pre- test, treatments and a post- test. The sample consisted of 54 students who were chosenby using cluster random sampling. The instruments of this research were writing text and questionnaire. The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of experimental class was higher than that of control class and the result of hypothesis testing using independent T-Testin SPSS 16showed that t value is greater than t table, so H1  was accepted. It can be concluded that the use of Google Docs significantly improves the students? writing skill and It also found that students were interested in learning writing by using Google Docs that is proved from their questionnaire result.

The objective of the research aims to investigate whether or not the use of CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM as an audiovisual learning software can develop the listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare. The research applied quasi-experimental design. The population of this research was the tenth year students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare. The total number of population is 411 students and two classes of twelve classes were taken as sample by using cluster random sampling. The findings of this study as the effect of Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM to develop the student’s listening ability, as shown by t-test value (4.6) that higher than t-table value (2.000). It means that the listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Model Parepare develop significantly after they are taught by using CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) with Oxford Smart Choice Multi-ROM.

English is a subject in the national examination for senior high school students. As a foreign language, learning English gives some obstacles. This article is written to describe a project of community engagement namely a simulation of the English listening section as a part of the national examination. This project was conducted in Madrasah Aliyah Darud Da’wah Wal-Irsyad Baruga Majene by a collaborative team, which consists of the lecturers and the students of the English Language Education Department of Majene State Islamic College. The participants are third-grade students. The simulation was conducted as same as the real test using the Hot Potatoes. The result of the simulation showed that students’ achievement did reach the passing grade namely 55. There are ten basic competencies implied in fifteen number. But the students only can choose the correct answer from questions that reflected four bacis competencies with the highest average score namely 63. Unfortunately, the students cannot reach other competencies. It seems that the students need more practice and learning activities.

Literature has a function as reflection or as mirror of the society. The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is one of literary works that could reflect the social condition or phenomena of the Puritan society in America. This research was a descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by using library research and it was analyzed by applying sociological approach proposed by Swingewood (1972) who revealed three classifications of sociology of literature. In this case, the researcher focused on the classification of sociology as the mirror of age. The result of this research showed that the important women’s roles in puritan society is teaching their children about the scripture

The complexity of foreign language learning and its restricted time to learn in the classroom need proactive efforts from the English students outside the classroom with full initiative and effort. This study tended to investigate to what extent students’ autonomous learning activities outside the classroom to master English (four English skills). This study applied a descriptive quantitative design. It was conducted at a state university in Majene, West Sulawesi, Indonesia in the academic year 2021/2022. The population was English education students in the second and third years. There were 62 students who participated in this research. They were selected by using a convenience sampling technique. To gain the data, this research employed a questionnaire as a research instrument which consists of 16 items of statements. The data, then, were analyzed by employing descriptive statistics. Based on the data analysis, it was found that students’ autonomous learning activities outside the classroom are still limited to activities that are entertaining for them. Apart from that, it has not been found that their extra efforts are done independently to become more proficient in every English skill. This indicates that students are still passive learners. By knowing the independent learning efforts carried out by students out of the classroom, English lecturers are expected to be able to design policies or teaching strategies to guide students so that they can increase their efforts by optimizing the wealth of available independent learning resources.

This research aims to see the implementation of WhatsApp media in EFL Classroom. Researcher used qualitative descriptive data collection through observation to see the learning process that took place in WhatsApp group, then interviewed students and teacher, and finally documentation. Data analysis techniques in this research are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. From the research results, it can be seen that the learning process is divided into three stages, namely: 1) Planning, 2) Implementation which is divided into three stages, namely: opening, core and closing activities and 3) evaluation. In this case, students can still participate in the learning process using WhatsApp group and easily accessible, save quota and also have various features that teacher can choose to use in the learning process such as WhatsApp groups, chat messages, document files, videos or photos. In addition, there are still obstacles that faced by teacher and students such as teacher cannot observe directly, learning is not optimal, poor internet network, full cellphone memory or lack of understanding of the material.

This study aims to explain and describe (1) the content of pragmatics study in utterances in a conversation between two close friends; and (2) the intentions behind the conversation of two close friends who live in the Polewali Mandar district, Mapilli sub-district. This study used qualitative research methods. Data collection conducted by recording technique. The analysis technique was carried out using a narrative technique after the recording was made in a transcript file. The results of this study can be concluded as follows: (1) two close friends who converse with each other in their speech produce the content of many person and spatial deixis, references to things, speech acts, and the negative politeness in their speech (2) the intentions contained behind this conversation between two close friends are among others: to represent people and places, describing someone, asking for something without hesitation, expressing wishes directly and this conversation also takes floor that is never missed in a conversation with turn taking turns always goes on and backchannels always being given after giving an utterance, and adjacency pairs that always occur and are balanced, the answers always match with the questions.Keywords: Pragmatics, Conversation, Close Friends

The second graders of MTs DDI Baru face several issues in learning English. Those become obstacles for them to get good achievement in the subject. One of the most difficult issue for them is they could not even compose a simple sentence properly using basic tenses such as simple present and simple past tense. The researcher tried to use game-based learning, in this case, using Snakes and Ladders game to solve the problem. So that, this research aims to find out the significant effect of using of snakes and ladders game in improving studentsâ€™ grammar ability. This research design applied research with one pre-test and one post-test design in the experimental and control class. From 5 classes, the researcher chose 2 classes as sample by using cluster random sampling. The data analysis result revealed that the post-test mean score (74.07) is greater than the pre-test mean score (37.24) in experimental class. The results of the t-test also confirm that the p-value is 0.001, or smaller than 0.05, whereas the t-value is 8.87 or greater than t-table 2.048. So, by considering the p and the t value, the reseacher withdraw conclusion that Hâ‚ is accepted which states that the use of the Snakes and Ladders game can improve studentsâ€™ grammar. However, another interesting finding reveals that there is also improvement of studentsâ€™ scores in the control class but not as significant as in the experimental class. The mean score increased 15.86 points while in the experimental class it increased 36.83 points

The research is derived from the politeness issue happened during teaching and learning process in the research location. The researcher found out that the students showed lack of awareness on communicating and interacting politely and formally to the teacher. This research aimed to find out the types of politeness strategies of students at SMA Negeri 1 Tinambung in learning process. The researcher applied qualitative research in order to know the students’ politeness strategies. The researcher focused on the students' 12 th-grade science at SMA Negeri 1 Tinambung. The subject of research consisted of 30–35 students from XII MIA 1 and one English teacher. The researcher did classroom observation who used politeness strategies in the classroom. In doing the classroom observation, the researcher took video to record all the activities in the classroom to see the types of politeness strategies based on Brown and Levison’s theory of Politeness Strategies. The researcher found that politeness strategies appeared in the learning process, they were positive politeness strategies. Positive politeness strategies happened to minimize the distance between the teacher and the students.
