Abstract

Since the emergence of the global COVID-19 pandemic, faith-based philanthropic activities have become widely attractive topics to be investigated. Yet, there has been little exploration related to gender issues. This study examined faith-based women’s engagement in dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak and its impacts focusing on a local context in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. Notably, the investigation aimed to explore the extent to which Aisyiyah's philanthropy in addressing the global issue. To achieve the purpose of the study, it carried out a qualitative method incorporating three data collection techniques: semi-structured interview involving 17 informants; participant observation focused on Aisyiyah’s programs conducted to overcome the COVID-19; and a desk study gained from documents, reports, media (and social media) such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube channels. The result delineates that while some scholars divide two paradigms of community engagement which are utilitarian and social justice, Aisyiyah in Sidoarjo has played vital contributions oriented toward social justice. This approach has been done through various programs; public awareness building, embracing the COVID-19 patients, and enhancing social solidarity to reduce the outbreak effects. These findings contribute to filling the literature gap on religious-based women's philanthropy in dealing with the pandemic. However, it is critical to explore the extent to which Aisyiyah's commitment to humanitarian activities for a long-term period since no one can even predict when it will end. Another pivotal issue that needs further investigation is Aisyiyah’s way in mobilizing social capital to support its philanthropic activities.

Abstract

Indonesia is somewhat affluent with conflict experiences due to differences in various backgrounds. The poorly managed religious, tribal, and cultural heterogeneities have become threats. Accordingly, the harmony amid heterogeneity in Central Kalimantan has become an interesting phenomenon. The harmony has fairly solid foundations, and one of them is the cultural base. This article aims to explore the cultural base that has become the foundation for the creation of harmony and the interaction between the community leaders in building harmony. The method used was qualitative-descriptive using empirical and normative approaches. The data was collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. They were further analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s models. This article found that huma betang has become a fairly solid cultural base in preserving community harmony. The interaction between community leaders, religious leaders, and indigenous leaders has become a supporting factor to maintain harmony in Central Kalimantan. This article is still limited to cultural harmony. Therefore, it calls for other perspectives to further enrich and deepen the study.

Abstract

The article aims to understand the phenomena of practicing madhhab in the Tablighi Jamaat (TJ) community in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The article also investigates the madhhab negotiation between TJ members and local people where the dawah occurs in a specific context. The article also looks at changes in religious educational program developed by TJ members that tend to be informal religious education. The majority of informal religious education surrounding TJ communities is tahfiz school (memorizing the Quran). TJ members are more interested in sending their children to tahfiz school than informal school and later become Islamic priests (kyai). They are not interested to semade their children take the university level. Besides, the article also concerns exploring another role of TJ in a socio-political context where they become facilitators to overcome the Pattani Muslim conflict with the Thai government. This research was conducted for a year in 2017-2018 (March 2017-April 2018) in three countries using ethnography approach during the process of collecting data by directly involved in Tablighi Jamaat activities. The mothed of collecting data used in this research was qualitative with observative participative technique, deep interview, and documentation. The result of the research shows that Jamaah Tabligh was successful negotiating the madhhab they believe to Muslim community with different Islamic point of view. Moreover, the shifting of education orientation was emerging in TJ community, the focus was on religious exegesis without paying attention on another aspect of education for their children. Parents of TJ have pride to be called a father of a hafiz than a doctor. Another finding was Jamaah Tablig have prominent role as a reconciliatory in Pattani, South Thailand that they earned trust from Thailand Government. Amid the deadlock of reconciliation of local Muslim who want to separate from the state of Thailand with regression that created violence, bombing and arresting the activist, Jamaah tablig was there as their guarantor.

Abstract

This article examines the Shiddiqiyyah Tariqa theosophy, which has produced people who care about welfare and humanity. This study took a qualitative model, and the data needed was about Tariqa teachings and the life activities of the Tariqa adherents collected through involved observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with the Murshid, 5 caliphs, and 20 Tariqa adherents which were then analyzed using holistic interpretation technique. The results showed that the Shiddiqiyyah Tariqa teaches  Mālikiyyah monotheism doctrine namely the unity insight between servant and the King (manunggale kawulo lan Gusti). Humans, as servants, must glorify the King by magnifying His name, working for Him, and adapting themselves to Him, for example, working diligently, because He is also diligent at working to bring prosperity to His servant. This teaching formed the Tariqa adherents into moderate people who, apart from being diligent in dhikr, were also diligent in work.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the presence of the community tradition of Bulutellue, Sinjai, South Sulawesi which is inherited from generation to generation. This tradition is known as mappanre temme, which is a crowded event related to expressions of gratitude and joy by families because their children have successfully finished reading the Koran. The purpose of this study is to explain the position of the Koran in the socio-cultural space, the implementation and function of mappanre temme for the people of Bulutellue, Sinjai, South Sulawesi. The research method used is qualitative research using a religious anthropological approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews and documentation. The data that has been collected is then analyzed so that it has the ability to read the verses contained in the Koran. The results of the study indicate that in the Bulutellue Village community, the Koran is normatively interpreted as the word of God that gives instructions for the path of salvation in this world and in the hereafter. However, in terms of cultural reality, the Koran is interpreted as a special object that is sacred and contains supernatural powers so that it can be functioned as a repellent against evil, healing disease, and fertilizing plants. This function is a trigger to learn the Koran, and if you are successful in completing the Koran and have the skills to read it, the mappanre temme tradition is carried out as an expression of gratitude while maintaining social harmony and friendship between community members, village government officials, and religious officials, as well as maintain and strengthen the relationship between students and teachers of the Koran.

Abstract

This paper is to figure out R. Ng. Yasadipura I’s poe(li)tical imagination of Islam in Babad Tanah Jawi. The ‘politics’ is defined not merely as instrumental utility, but intertwined with ‘poetics’, an aesthetic strategy which allegorically unveils an interpretation of the undecidability of  Islam as central Islam or peripheral Islam, as Arabia Islam or Javanese Islam. Based on the biographical and structural approaches, this article attempts to analyze textual, ideological, and religious traces of this 18th century Javanese Muslim bhujangga and its relation to the way he describes Islam in Babad Tanah Jawi. Yasadipura I is a political subject, since he describes Islam not merely as a religious consensus, but also dissensus to other identities. This dissensus is partly a logical consequence of—using Jacques Rancière’s term—Yasadipura I’s ‘class migration’, ranging from Muslim student (santri) from Kedu, royal advisor (menteri) of Surakarta court, to prolific writer and translator of Hindu-Buddhist kakawin and Islamic Malay suluk.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the religious moderation promoted by Ahmadiyah through the website. The Ahmadiyah religious moderation discourse is related to the struggle for identity in the public sphere. This study is qualitative with documentation data collection techniques, namely digging documents containing religious moderation texts found on the Ahmadiyah website. The data are analyzed using a new media approach, which is an approach that sees a text that appears on a new media website as connected to the traditional text of the Holy Book. However, because website media texts relate to the offline world, external factors from social complexity also affect website text building. The results of the study indicate that internally the religious moderation text constructed by Ahmadiyah online comes from its ideology which is indeed fighting for peace and non-violence jihad. Meanwhile, externally, complex social realities in the midst of mainstream authorities and the state also contribute to the moderation text of the Ahmadiyya religion. The values of moderation promoted by Ahmadiyah are, first, supporting the strengthening of nationality by developing the concept of a spiritual and moral caliphate, not a political and militaristic caliphate. Second, strengthening peace and non-violence by encouraging jihad with a pen (jihad bi al-qalam) in response to various emerging social issues. Third, strengthening religious tolerance and freedom by emphasizing openness, not coercion in religion. Fourth, strengthening the existence of local culture by optimizing universal Islamic teachings. In the context of the Ahmadiyya as a minority, the discourse on religious moderation can be said to be an effort to struggle for Ahmadiyya identity in the public sphere in the midst of the mainstream and state authorities. However, this identity struggle seems to be hampered by the problem of Mirza Ghulam Ahmad's (MGA) prophetic position. Therefore, a more massive dialogue is needed with the local Muslim mainstream.

The research was conducted at the Ar-Rohmah pesantren, Malang City as a modern pesantren that is part of ‘the pesantren tangguh’ program. By using  Robert K. Merton’s theory as an analytical tool, this research conducted an explanatory case study. Data collection techniques carried out through observation, documentation, and in-depth interviews with informants are determined purposively. The results of this study showed that at the beginning of the pandemic, the adaptation of pesantren tended to conformity pattern with longer school holidays to minimize the spread of Covid-19. At the beginning of re-entry, the Ar-Rohmah pesantren’s adaptation tended to an innovation pattern by conducting offline learning with health protocols that are not strict.  After an ustadz passed away and he was confirmed as positively infected Covid-19,  the adaptation process carried out was more conformity by conducting blended learning and all pesantren’s members more adhered to health protocols. However, in June 2021 Ar-Rohmah pesantren tend to be innovation pattern with pesantren activities that are carried out offline, which can be followed by community around the pesantren.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze religious hoaxes on social media in Indonesia by examining their logical, religious, and legal dimensions. It highlights how these hoaxes, often framed through logical fallacies and spread via digital platforms, exacerbate social polarization and interfaith tensions. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on high-profile cases involving religious hoaxes during 2020–2021. The researchers collected data from social media posts, comments, and videos on platforms such as YouTube and Twitter, as well as from secondary sources, including news articles, legal documents, and religious texts. The findings reveal the strategic use of logical fallacies such as ad hominem and argumentum ad populum, the exploitation of sensitive religious issues, and the amplification of divisive narratives through digital platforms. These hoaxes significantly impact societal harmony, resulting in polarization, theological confusion, and heightened interfaith tensions. The study underscores the critical need to enhance media literacy, foster interfaith dialogue, and enforce digital content regulations. These strategies can mitigate the impact of religious hoaxes and promote a more informed, cohesive society. This research integrates logical, religious, and legal frameworks to analyze religious hoaxes comprehensively. Addressing the intersection of these perspectives offers a unique contribution to understanding and mitigating the societal impacts of digital misinformation.
