Abstract

The study aims to examine the contribution of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani to the formation of pesantren nationalism through the preaching of bil qalam. The method used is a qualitative method by exploring the works of Shaykh Nawawi al-Bantani, especially those relating to jihad in the national context reflecting the attitude of nationalism, and by seeing their contribution to the world of pesantren. The results of the study showed that Shaykh Nawawi alBantani preached with bil qalam approach, namely in the form of intellectual jihad. He was not directly involved in physical resistance against the invader. But it instilled the enthusiasm and awareness of the love of the motherland in each of his students. Nawawi's work was then taught in the world of pesantren, especially NU pesantran. Scholars like KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, who was influenced by Nawawi's struggle, built the NU organization that not only appeared as the most significant Islamic mass organization but also contributed to the initial formation of the Indonesian national identity. It can be seen from the involvement of KH. Wahid Hasyim in the 1945 BPUPKI-PPKI session. It shows that NU has the same Islamic orientation as what Syaikh Nawawi thought. Nawawi's moderate and contextual attitude always colors NU's actions in carrying out religious propaganda and national propaganda in Indonesia. This also proves that santri is not just a religious entity that lives in Indonesian society, but at a crucial point, santri is the identity of the Indonesian people themselves.

Abstract

The presence of the new Islamic civil society movement, which is generally represented by the salafism ideology, is a challenge for mainstream Islamic organizations such as NU and Muhammadiyah. The new Islamic civil group called the splinter moves massively in four main social domains, namely private, public, market, and state. By using a qualitative method based on the sociological approach, this article will answer how the struggle between the mainstream Islamic civil groups and splinter civil groups in these four domains. This study concludes that the discourse of Islamic civil society in Indonesia today is very complex. Discourse does not only occur between state and non-state, but also between fellow Islamic civil groups. They contest each other in developing the private sphere, showing their existence in the public sphere, controlling and developing economic/market resources, and involving themselves in government/politics. Each group has their respective strategies in displaying their role so that it often causes friction. This condition requires open communication, mutual understanding and cooperation between all Islamic civil groups.

Abstract

The websites of NU and Muhammadiyah effectively reconcile religious beliefs with the practicalities of government policies during the pandemic. These organizations have crafted legal frameworks that streamline religious rituals amidst COVID-19 restrictions and containment measures. This study explores how their discourse promotes a harmonious fusion of religious and state values, particularly within organizations known for their moderate approach to religious matters. Utilizing discursive practice and discourse analysis, the study reveals that both NU and Muhammadiyah establish pandemic-specific worship guidelines aligned with government policies. While NU's approach relies on classical Fiqh arguments, Muhammadiyah adopts a more pragmatic and progressive stance. Nevertheless, both organizations share the common goal of ensuring ease and accessibility for the public to practice their faith during these challenging times. This facilitation, grounded in sound reasoning, incorporates adaptations to state policies when selecting thematic approaches. This alignment highlights that NU and Muhammadiyah's moderation concept not only considers the applicability of religious texts to local circumstances but also supports government initiatives aimed at public welfare and addressing the COVID-19 crisis.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to examine the fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM) method to establish the optimum cluster accuracy of zakat potential in Indonesia. A spatial mapping approach is also suggested and can be considered as the first step in knowing the distribution of zakat potential in Indonesia. Furthermore, strategies that can be implemented are formulated to increase zakat collection in Indonesia. Potential zakat data from the National Amil Zakat Agency (Baznas) in 2020 consisting of bank deposits, salaries, agricultural products, plantation products, and staple foods. Each province in Indonesia is used as the proposed variable. In this paper, firstly collecting data on indicators of potential zakat. Second, the FCM clustering algorithm. Third, the results of the FCM grouping are visualized in the form of a mapping. This novel mapping study with FCM was applied in order to analyze clustering accuracy. The FCM results confirm 2 optimum clusters for zakat potential in Indonesia where cluster 2 has more members than cluster 1. Besides, the second cluster only has one variable that has a high value, namely agricultural products, while the rest is in the first cluster. This indicates that the first cluster has a higher potential for zakat. The application of fuzzy c-means (FCM) to obtain the optimum cluster on zakat potential to produce a mapping of zakat potential is a novelty in the field of Islamic economic studies. Finally, the results of the analysis with this approach provide optimum results to strengthen the zakat collection strategy in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the virtual da'wa laboratory of Walisongo TV (WTV) and MBS FM owned by the Faculty of Da’wa and Communication, UIN Walisongo Semarang in nurturing Islamic moderatism during Ramadan 2020 amid the Covid-19 Pandemic. This research is a qualitative study using the New Media and Religion approach from Cambpbell (2010) who stated that there are two important objects regarding online religion, namely the technical aspects of new media, and the non-technical aspects related to three things, namely the community, authority, and textual media. The study concludes that first, technically WTV and MBS uses new media such as WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, Jitsi.meet, and Zoom meeting for all activities, starting from the internal crew's coordination; communication between crews and da’i in discussing da’wa contents; videos taking process; production activities, to promotions and publications. Second, non-technically WTV and MBS FM provide the products in the form of recordings and LIVE (live broadcast). The products represent the Islamic moderate community behind the media authorized by Nadlatul Ulama (NU) da’wa ideology. Hence, media text broadcasted is framed by the jargon “Islam Rahmatan li al-‘Alamin” based on the classical Islamic texts (Kitab Kuning). This suggests that community, authority, and textual media have to be taken into account in forming a virtual moderate da’wa laboratory.

Abstract

Purpose - The transformative power of new media has revolutionized the practice of Islamic da'wah. This article examines the implications of the intersection of religion and new media for contemporary da'wah practices.Method - This study uses qualitative research with a new media and da'wah approach. Data was obtained by online observation of da’wah social media that featured or involved several da’wah figures in Indonesia.Result - This study found that testing the 5 Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Community, Creativity, and Convergence) that characterize new media shows a different form of da'wah in new media from the construct of da'wah in the conventional era. In the new media era, for example, da'wah is understood as open communication that allows the preacher and the recipient to exchange messages simultaneously. In new media, da'wah is also a collaborative activity that allows everyone to collaborate to support a da'wah idea. New media-based da'wah is also characterized by the existence of various da'wah communities spread across multiple platforms, the creativity of various actual content that is by various issues developing in society, as well as the combination of numerous media which makes da'wah content in new media available completely, openly, and easily accessed.Implication - Academically, this study has implications for enriching preaching theories in the contemporary world, while practically, this study has implications for the importance of preachers in adapting to the dynamics produced by new media.Originality/Value - The originality of this research lies in its novelty, which focuses on changes in preaching due to new media that have received little attention from previous researchers.***Tujuan - Media baru telah mengubah praktik dakwah Islam.

Abstract

Dialogue between religion and science is a necessity, because both of them can mutually reinforce the sources of Islamic law. The astronomical approach in the study of hadith makes a significant contribution to the development of astronomy. This article aims to examine the thoughts of an Indonesian Muslim scholar, namely Syamsul Anwar, who offers the concept of the interconnection of astronomy with hadith (especially astronomical hadith). This type of research is a literature by conducting a descriptive analysis of Syamsul Anwar's thoughts. The results of the study show that his contribution to the study of astronomy through an astronomical approach is able to strengthen understanding of the position of a hadith not only from a shari'ah perspective but at the same time being able to explain the meaning of a text using scientific principles (science). The study shows the importance of contextualization and interconnection between Islamic scholarship and other scientific fields. Thus, the efforts that have been made by Syamsul Anwar further strengthen the importance of dialogue between religion and science

Abstract

This article aims to identify and analyse the potential for inclusive da'wah in Central Java Province, Indonesia, by focusing on three fundamental aspects that determine the success of the da'wah process: the subject, the object, and the environment of the da'wah. This research applies an empirical approach through a series of spatial clustering analyses using the fuzzy geographically weighted clustering (FGWC) method to determine the optimum number of clusters in mapping the potential for da'wah. FGWC is a spatial analysis method that combines the concept of fuzzy clustering with a geographically weighted approach, allowing for more flexible and contextual identification of distribution patterns based on location. This method was chosen for its ability to handle uncertainty in spatial data as well as considering geographical variations in clustering. The data used in this study came from the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Central Java Province, covering demographic, social, and religious data from 35 districts/cities in Central Java. The results of the FGWC analysis show that the optimum number of clusters is two, with districts/cities in the second cluster identified as having higher da’wah potential. This is evidenced by six high-value variables in the second cluster, while the first cluster has only one high-value variable. These findings have significant implications for inclusive da'wah strategies in Central Java. These results can be used as a strategy for mapping priority da'wah areas, allocating effective resources, and developing a more contextualised da'wah approach according to the characteristics of each cluster. This research's originality lies in applying the FGWC method in the context of da'wah mapping. This article is the first to combine spatial analysis with a study of the potential for inclusive da'wah, thus contributing to developing an interdisciplinary approach in the study of contemporary Islam in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of public relations values in cultural da'wah communication in the digital era carried out by the KiaiKanjeng music group through the CakNun.com YouTube channel. As a cultural arts group associated with Emha Ainun Nadjib (CakNun), KiaiKanjeng uses the medium of music and culture to convey inclusive, humanist, and dialogical Islamic messages. In the context of digital space, the da'wah they build is not only informative, but also forms communication relations with the public. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis techniques to identify da'wah themes, as well as media content studies to interpret symbols, visuals, and cultural meanings contained in KiaiKanjeng videos. Data was obtained from a number of videos selected with a focus on this research that highlights how public relations values such as credibility, honesty, consistency, and two-way communication are integrated in their da'wah narratives. CakNun.com's YouTube channel is positioned as a strategic medium to build a culturally friendly Islamic image, respond to contemporary issues, and strengthen emotional bonds with digital audiences. The results show that the integration of public relations values is the key to KiaiKanjeng's success in delivering relevant, communicative, and adaptive da'wah messages to a plural society in the digital era. This study contributes to the study of Islamic Communication and Broadcasting in relation to the integration of public relations values to cultural da'wah activities.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the fundamental concepts of da'wah in response to new media culture. Using a qualitative research for conceptual design, this study has found that the proliferation of cyber religious proselytizing leads the elements of da'wah have become ever-widening concepts. The concept of da’i, for instance, has experienced the reconceptualisation that not only refers to person who conveys Islamic teachings through religious sermon (khutbah), but also denotes to a creative content provider for da’wah purposes in the internet. Additionally, the power of preaching in the new media lies in the quality of message, that is, good, comprehensive and argumentative. Similarly, redefinition of the concepts ma'du, feedback, and other da'wah elements occur as response to digital media culture.
