Abstract

Lesser yam (Dioscorea esculenta (Lour.) Burkill) tubers have two important roles in conventional cultivation, as the food as well as the propagation material. The stem cuttings technique is reported can not produce tubers, while micropropagation is less efficient due to the need of large capital, experts, and specific tools. The other hand, farmers are less interested in cultivating this commodity. It has been reported that mini tuber sett can be used for propagation, but it has not been able to explain the growth preferences in each part of the tuber and its effect on yield. The research aims to provide information about the growth preference of lesser yam seedlings from different planting materials and planting techniques and their effects on yields. The research was carried out in Research Center for Biology, LIPI, Cibinong. The experiment was arranged based on split plots with tubers (apical and basal parts) as the main plot and planting position (vertical and horizontal) as subplots. Each treatment was replicated 3 times, with 5 samples for each replication. The results revealed that the apical part produced better shoots and roots than the basal section. The apical dominance of the lesser yam tuber was very high. It is herefore buds that form in the apical tended to grow faster. This section also produced tuber with a better character. With this information, farmers recommended to use planting materials from the apical part of the tuber with horizontal planting position.

Abstract

An increasing of population, land conversion, and the behaviour changes in many crops due to global warming could produce a significant negative effect to food security in many countries, including Indonesia. In order to maintain the availability of food, we should find out alternative foods based on corp comodities that can adapt to future agricultural land conditions. One species to be promoted for that purpose is Tacca leontopetaloides (taka). This study was aimed to determine growth characteristics variations of taka in Java and its surrounding small islands through exploration and interview methods. Results indicated that there were two morphological variations of taka based on the canopy colour, namely green and purple. Taka found growing in coastal areas up to100 m above sea level. The light intensity and soil type greatly affected their growth. These plants lived either solitary or in a groups, grow well on sandy soil to clay, under the shade and open areas. Species around taka allegedly contributed in determining taka growth and production. Taka tuber can be an alternative carbohydrate source for supporting food self-sufficiency in coastal communities.

Abstract

Wati(Piper methysticum Forst.f.)leaves has been used as narcotic in some parts of Irian Jaya since longtime ago. The GCMS analysis of wati leaves organic extracts(hexane,chloroform, methanol)has detected 48 components consisted alkanes,oxygenated hydrocarbons, fatty acid, steroids and alkaloids,including 5 major components, i.e. dihydro kawain,anisol p-undecyl, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-on, levulinic acid and one of unknown component.Forty-three other minor components will be discussed.

Abstract

S. ATMOWIDJOJO & Z. FACHRUROZI. 1985. Plants with medium and tall statures in the kitchen gardens in Teluknaga, Citeureup and Pacet. Berita Biologi 3(2): 37 - 48. Analyses on plants of kitchen gardens showed the presence of 25 species of middle-stratum and 23 species of higher stratum in three studied localities. For the middle-stratum, only 28% were found in common, while the higher stratum 21.73%. Bananas were the most common middle-stratum found in 3 localities, coconut and mango tiees were the most common in Teluknaga, and rarnbutans in Citeureup. Fertilizers were used only at the most 25%, but for clove and citrus trees in Citeureup and Pacet by more than 50% growers. Most of the fertilizer used was manure, but for higher stratum plants in Teluknaga synthetic fertilizers were used more. Pest management was not commonly practiced. If done, synthetic insecticides were generally used.

Abstract

Jali (Coix lacryma-jobi L.; Poaceae) is a potential cereal for food diversification especially as carbohydrate source. The aim of this current research was to study the productivity of jali cultivated under various doses of fertilizer. Jali were planted on polybag (30x40 cm) with mix-ture of soil:compost=2:1 as planting media. Fertilizer treatments were A) 0-0-0; B) 2-1-1; C) 2,5-1,5-1,5; D) 3-2-2-; E) 3,5-2,5-2,5 and F) 4-3-3 gram urea:SP36:KCl (gr/polybag). The experiment used randomized block design with 9 replications. Result indicated that on 13 WAP (Week After Planting) the highest plant height achieved on 2,5-1,5-1,5 treatment (198,44 cm), leaf number on 4-3-3 treatment (65,44), tiller number on 4-3-3- treatment (4,22), and branch number on 2,5-1,5-1,5 treatment (5,89). These measurements were significantly different from control but not with the other fertilization treatments. On harvesting time of 6 MAP ( Months After Planting) the highest number of seed/plant was from treatment 4-3-3 (792,6) followed by treatment 2-1-1 treatment (672,5). The result of this study suggested that 2-1-1 gram Urea:SP36:KCl (gr/polybag) treatment was the best in increasing hanjeli productivity.

Abstract

N. UTAMI & SIH KAHONO. 1988. Pollination on the pinang yaki (Areca vestiaria Giseke) in the Bogor Botanical Gardens. Berita Biologi 3(9): 470 -472.Morphology,flowering biology of the pinang yaki was observed at the Bogor Botanical Gardens.This plant i&imonocious and self pollinated. However,insect visitors appear to play an importantrole of fruit setting.It was showed that the number of fruits setting in isolated inflorescence were smaller than in unisolated inflorescence.During anthesis,the inflorescence were visited by ten species of insects,and Trigona iridipennis was suspected as the palm pollinator.

Abstract

SIH KAHONO, L.E. PUDJIASTUTI &. M. AMIR. 1987. Insect visitors on Acacia villosa Willd. Suppl. Berita Biologi. 3 : 70 - 71 Insect visitors on Acacia villosa Willd. (Leguminosae) has been observed at 10 flowering plants at Cibinong, Bogor. Observation were made at 6 a.m.-6 p.m. by means of collecting insects that visit the flowers of A. villosa for 30 minute with the interval time collection of 2 hours.There were found Hymenoptera (17 species), and followed by Lepidoptera (7 species) and Diptera (3 species).The community sturcture of the insect visitors at interval of 2 hours are varies, the number increased toward the mid day, and gradually declined in the evening. This fluctuation is probably due to the nectar content during the day.

Abstract

Bawean Island is one of the small islands in the northern province of East Java. The existence of a number of waterfalls, lakes and elevated plains indicates that the diversity of habitat types on the island is quite high. This research activity aims to determine the diversity and vegetation of tree and estimation of carbon stocks of tree in Bawean Island Nature Reserve. The study was conducted using transects and purposive sampling methods. Data were analyzed by calculating the importance value index and the Shannon-Winner diversity index. The study results showed that the vegetation of trees in the Nature Reserve and Wildlife of Bawean Island is high with the value of the Shannon Wiener index(H ') is hight (5.01). The results of the analysis of the tree vegetation is known that the highest IVI owned by Ficus variegata with an IVI of 36.4. Two other important species in the region is Irvingia malayana with an IVI of 21.1 and Myristica guatteriaefolia with an IVI of 16.4. The results of calculations of carbon stocks in Bawean Island Forest showed that the average carbon obtained was 150,71 ton C ha-1. The highest carbon stocks are Mount Kastoba forest and Lumut Mount Forest. Irvingia malayana is accounted for the largest carbon stocks (33.95 ton C ha-1).

Abstract

G. PANGGABEAN & A. TRI SUNARTO. 1985.The effect of fruit maturity of sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) and lime (C. aurantifolia (Christm.) Swing, on vitamin C content. Berita Biologi 3(3):101 - 103. - The effect of fruit maturity on vitamin content were studied on sour orange (C. aurantium) and lime (C. aurantifolia}.In sour orange,vitamin C content of 13-16 weeks were 24-25 mg/100 ml. However, the content of vitamin C decreased according to the maturity of the fruits which at the stage of 26 weeks reached 11.68 mg/100 ml.The vitamin C of lime at the age of 16 - 19 weeks were 8.50 - 9.14, mg/100 ml. The fruits of 25 weeks old contained 26.50 mg/100 ml of the vitamin C. The fruits became over ripe and rotted after 25 weeks.

Abstract

Among the soores of islands that make up "Pulau Seribu",Pulau Pari is ecologically interesting. It is composed of five small islands united by a common., distantly located, outer reef.Collectively they offer a long beach line easily within our reach.The vast intertidal area, the uneven bottom topography and the nature of the bottom, give rise to different kind of habitats from which we may expect different biotic populations.
