Abstract

Penyebaran Cestrum aurantiacum Lindl. di hutan remnant sekundair Wornojiwo Kebun Raya Cibodas (KRC) dianalisis dalam penelitian ini menggunakan Nearest Neighbor Method. Peranan (korelasi) faktor lingkungan terhadap pola penyebaran C. aurantiacum dibandingkan dengan jenis pohon asli dan dilakukan dengan menggunakan cluster analysis. Faktor-faktor lingkungan yang digunakan dalam cluster analysis ini yaitu: intensitas cahaya, keasaman tanah, kelembapan tanah dan kelembapan udara. Hasil analisis penyebaran menunjukkan bahwa jarak penyebaran C. aurantiacum hampir lima kali lebih besar daripada penyebaran yang diasumsikan terjadi secara acak. Hasil cluster analysis menunjukkan bahwa intensitas cahaya berhubungan secara nyata dengan penyebaran C. aurantiacum di hutan Wornojiwo. Intensitas cahaya rata-rata di plot dengan C. aurantiacum lebih besar dibandingkan dengan plot tanpa C. aurantiacum. Contoh pengaplikasian hasil penelitian ini adalah memprioritaskan eradikasi C. aurantiacum yang ada di pinggir hutan daripada yang ada di bagian tengah. Hasil penelitian ini juga mempertegas pentingnya memelihara tegakan hutan alami untuk memelihara naungan hutan.

Abstract

Study of diversity and abundance of social bees (Apidae) in the pesticide-applied seasonal crops were carried out for nine species of crops in a lowland area, Dramaga, Bogor and on 17 species of crops ina highland area, Lembang, Bandung, both in the province of West Java. Two species of honey bees (Apis cerana and A. dorsata) and one species of stingless bee (Trigonalaeviceps) were recorded from the lowland crops,while only A. cerana was found in the highland crops. The most abundant bee species on both low and highland was the honey bee A. cerana. The number of A. cerananests and T. laevicepsnests in the surroundings of the study sites were relatively high. Colony members of both bee species were very active to collect nectar and pollen from flowers in non-pesticide-applied sites; however, the density of bees visiting flowers in pesticide-applied seasonal crops in both lowland and highland were relatively low.

Abstract

Studies on the therapeutic use of insects and insect products have been neglected compared to the use of other animals or plants.This study aims to determine the antibacterial and antioxidant potential of ants extracts. Preliminary study related to antibacterial and antioxidant screeningof 17 extracts of ant colonies that belongs to 8 species were performed by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)-Bioautography. Antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging method. The antibacterial activity was done against three pathogenic bacteria, i.e Bacillus subtilis InaCC B-1, Staphylococcus aureus InaCC B-4 and Escherichia coli InaCC B-5 were performed by non-eluted TLC-autobiography assay. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and IC50 values of DPPH radical scavenging activity of active extracts were determined by microdilution in 96-well microplate. The results showed 6 extracts active against B.subtilis, 5 extracts active against S.aureus. The lowest MIC value was 512 µg/ ml.  Ten extracts had the antioxidant activity with various IC50 values. The extracts of ants might be used as bioactive resources for antibacterial and antioxidant.

Abstract

Proteases is enzyme that breaks the peptide bond to produce amino acids and simpler peptides. This enzyme can be isolated from a variety of sources such as plants, animals and microbe. Alkaline proteases of microbial origin possess considerable industrial potential due to their biochemical diversity and wide applications in tannery, food, medicinal formulations and detergents. The objectives of the research was to determine the characteristics of the protease enzyme produced by strain A1, including incubation time, substrate concentration azokasein, the optimum temperature and pH also stability. The effect of some metal ions as activators or inhibitors of the protease enzyme activity measured with a spectrophotometer at ? 280 nm. Strain A1 was identified by using 16S rDNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis based on Neighbor Joining method. Strain A1 protease activity was qualitatively demonstrated the presence of a clear zone around the colonies in the medium containing 1% skim milk. Result showed that the highest activity were incubation time of three days, temperature of 50 ºC and pH 8.5 were 87.35 U/mL, 83.44 U/mL and 93.11 U/mL, respectively. Effect of metal ions in the form of divalent and monovalent cations at a concentration of 1 mM on protease A1 activated by divalent cations CaCl2, MnCl2 while divalent cations CuCl2, HgCl2 and monovalent cations KCl, NaCl were inhibitors of each enzyme activity. Result from molecular identification based on 16S rDNA sequence and phylogenetic analysis using Neighbor Joining method suggested that strain A1 was Bacillus subtilis. The strain was registered in the InaCC collection (no. B 398).

Abstract

Best tilapia is breed fish developed by Research Center and Development of Freshwater Aquaculture (BPPBAT) Bogor that has been launched since 2008. Best tilapia is the third generation of gift tilapia. In order to obtain a better growth performance, BPPBAT continued the process of breeding, and to date we have obtained the sixth generations of Best tilapia. This study was aimed to determine growth of tilapia through observation of the relationship between the length and weight of local tilapia, F5 and F6 BEST which were maintained in brackish waters in the Pangkep area, South Sulawesi. Fish samples were taken at random, 30 fishes were taken from each population for length and weight measurement. Calculation of the length-weight of fish in the Pangkep area obtained regression coefficient (b) for local fish 2.4361; BEST F5 3.1077 and F6 3.0522. These values indicated that the local tilapia was negatively allometric while BEST was positively allometric, with local fish condition factor ranged between 0.471-1.334, F5; 0.468-1.479 and 0.498-1.534 F6 respectively. This results has indicating the normal condition of the fish. The length-weight relationship of fish had a value of determinant (R 2) ranged from 0.7829-0.9182, and indicated fish variations influenced by other variables was rather small and has suggested close relationship between length and weight.

Abstract

The objective of the study was to isolate microorganism that can produce growth hormone, fix atmospheric nitrogen, and solubilize inorganic phosphate that may be used for enhancing the growth of banana in marginal land.  A total of 25 bacteria associated with banana that belonged to six genera were isolated from namely Acinetobacter, Enterobacter, Pantoea, Klebsiella, Rhizobium, and Cupriavidus genera. Gammaproteobacteria is the dominant class, followed by Betaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria. All isolates were screened for multiple plant growth promoting traits which may play a role in banana growth, namely fixing nitrogen, solubilizing phosphate, and producing Indole Acetic Acid (IAA). Twenty-two isolates were capable to fix nitrogen, 21 isolates can solubilize insoluble phosphate, and 15 isolates produced IAA dependent of L-Tryptophan presence. Despite most of the bacteria isolates exhibited one plant growth-promoting activities, Enterobacter and Klebsiella genera showed three of plant growth promoting bacteria traits.

Abstract

Fagraea fragrans known as tembesu is a tree species used for panel wood (MDF, medium density fiberboard), particle board, veneer and furniture. The aim of this experiment was to know successful growth origin of shoot cutting F. fragrans and to study the effect of combination treatment the origin of cutting material and media F. fragrans. The shoot cutting was done with KOFFCO system. The results showedthat the cutting material from seedling juvenile shoot provided 61.56% of shoot formation, 91.42% of survivorship and 76.33% root formed.In addition, origin material from seedling juvenile gave a significantly effect on root length and wet root weight, wet shoot weight, dry root weight and significant on dry shoot weight parameter. The increasing age of the parent tree, diminishing cuttings success. The cuttings media cocopeat (coir dust) with paddy husk gives very significant effect on root length parameter, significant on wet root weight and gave very significant effect on root dry wet. There is an interaction between the cuttings material with cutting media, for root length parameter,wet root weight and dry root weight.

Abstract

The use of alternative feed for Sunda pangolin in captivity is one way to cope with a shortage of feed. The aims of the research was to determine the impact of the use of alternative feed toward feed consumption and daily weight gain of pangolin in captivity. The research was conducted at Research Forest Dramaga, Bogor. The research material used by 4 individual pangolin consists of 2 males and 2 females with an average weight of 4.28 ± 0.22 kg. Research using 4x4 Latin Square Design, with 7 days of preliminary period and 14 days of data collection. The treatment applied were 4 alternative feeding i.e A= 50% kroto + 50% egg; B= 50% kroto + 50% tofu; C= 50% kroto + 20% egg + 30% tofu; D= 50% kroto + 18% egg + 26% tofu + 6% termites. The results showed that the effect of alternative feed not significantly (P<0.05) on feed consumption and body weight gain pangolin. Pangolin with treatment C consumed feed based on dry matter as much as 63.08 grams per day or 10.46% from body weight and the biggest weight gain 35.0 grams per individual per day.

Abstract

Nepenthes spp. (pitcher plants) are carnivorous plants, because it can trapping and digesting insects and other small animals in their pitcher as their food. In 1996, there were 80 species noted in the world. Nowadays, the number has increased up to 139 species and 68 species(48.9%) of whom live and grow on various islands in Indonesia, such as Sumatra (34 species), Kalimantan (22 species), Java (3 species), Sulawesi (11 species), Maluku (3 species) and Papua (11 species). Herbarium Bogoriense-Research Center for Biology-The Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), as the central storage plant specimens in Indonesia, currently holds 2135 sheets of 72 species of Nepenthes are collected from various islands in Indonesia and from other countries. This paper will review the current number of Nepenthes and its distribution in various islands in Indonesia.

Abstract

The extent of salinity effect land due to bad agricultural practices and global climate change that could affect the productivity of cultivated plants in agricultural and coastal areas as a result of rising sea levels, encourage the study of cultivated plants resistance to salinity stress. This research is aimed to observe the mangrove Avicennia marina (Forsskål) Vierh., a halophyt, grew up on the beach as a plant model that is able to adapt to saline environment by pumping out the NaCl (sodium pump) and deposited on the leaf surface. On the application of sea water with a multilevel concentrations (0, 25, 50 and 75%) A. marina is able to adjust by changing the osmotic potential in line with the level of concentration of sea water, as an indication of the course of osmotic regulation. Meanwhile, soybean var. Anjasmoro only able to adapt to sea water at a concentration of 25%, equivalent to 150 mM NaCl. This result may be the starting point by breeders and biotecknolo gists in utilizing the potential genes drives the salinity resistance characters in Indonesian mangrove species (especially Avicennia marina) to contrive salinity resistance cultivars of cultivated food plants with better yield.
