Abstract

This study is intended to investigate how EFL secondary students’ reading comprehension can be enhanced through the SQ4R method. The design of this study was classroom action research which involved 31 students from class IX-A of one secondary school in Samarinda, Indonesia. Two instruments were used in this study, i.e., an observation sheet and a reading test. The observation data were qualitatively analyzed using the provided checklist, while the data from reading test was quantitatively analyzed by having percentage analysis and categorizing the results into score levels. The results revealed that the implementation of the SQ4R method could enhance the students’ reading comprehension achievement. Quantitatively, 18 students (58%) out of 31 passed the KKM (minimum completeness criteria) in cycle 1; meanwhile, in cycle 2, 27 students (87%) out of 31 students passed the KKM. In addition, problems faced by the collaborator-teacher can be solved by the dynamics happening in the two cycles, which results in the betterment of the teaching and learning process using the SQ4R method. The reflection from the two cycles showed that SQ4R can improve EFL students' reading comprehension. As the method's impacts develop, teaching and learning quality changes.

Abstract

Current research in Indonesia about reading habits tends to discuss the topic quantitatively instead of exploring the process of how reading habits were developed. Whereas it is necessary to see reading habits as a process of development. Through seeing it as a process, reading habit can be seen as not just a measurable component but more into a sustained lifetime literacy. To fill this void, this research aimed to investigate the development of an adult learner’s reading habits as their lifetime literacy. In conducting this study, the researcher usednarrative inquiry as the method of the research. The data were collected through twice in-depth interviews with the participant. The data were analysed by using narrative three-dimensional aspects by Clandinin et.al (2013). In terms of temporality, the participant has experienced a reading habit since she was in Czech elementary school. Because her family maintains the habit, the reading habit remains until today. In terms of sociality, the role models of the reading habit are the participants' schoolmates and her father. In terms of spatiality, Czech has shaped the experience of the participants' reading habit. When she went back to Indonesia, the reading habit in Indonesian school was less exposed. This indicated that reading habits can be developed through the interaction of two key people. The first was the schoolteachers and the second was parents. The reading habits activity should be sustainable at school and at home.

Abstract

Nowadays, Google Translate is a common online tool to help people translate one language to other languages. It makes the translation quality of Google Translate very important. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate grammatical faults resulting from Google Translate based on Dulay's theory and discover the possible causes of grammatical faults in translating the Laskar Pelangi novel in Google Translate. Thirty-seven sentences related to the physical condition of the school were chosen, translated into English by Google translate, and analyzed qualitatively by using content analysis. The results showed that 205 errors were found, consisting of 48.29% misformation, 23.41% omission, 17.07% addition, and 11.21% disordering. These errors were caused by the improper structure of the source language affecting the Google Translate system in translating sentences, word by word translation, and the lack of awareness of Google Translate users in reviewing the translation results from Google Translate. The results also revealed that the errors in translating the novel and corpus were suitable. Regardless of the translation suitability of Google Translate in translating corpus shown by several studies, the findings also proved that research on the grammatical errors of novel translations was still lacking.

Abstract

Automated feedback (AF) has been extensively investigated by L2 researchers, but in-depth research on English learners’ use of AF to revise their English essays is still limited. Moreover, whether there exist individual differences in essay revision remains underexplored. To address these gaps, this cross-sectional study, by adopting a qualitative research method, mainly reports on two Chinese EFL (English as a foreign language) learners’ use of the feedback provided by Pigai, an AWE (automated writing evaluation) system. First, both researchers analyzed learners’ different writing drafts to see where changes were made. Then, learners participated in a retrospective interview regarding their revision behaviors. The writing drafts and the interview data reveal individual differences between both writers’ revision behaviors. Specifically, one writer accepted only a tiny portion of Pigai’s suggestions. In contrast, the other not only took up automated feedback but actively made self-initiated revisions. Such differences might be attributed to their gender difference, English proficiency, interest and motivation levels in English learning, stances on automated feedback, and writing experiences in secondary school.
