The total number of the sample was 32 students that was taken purposively. The data were obtained by means of writing test. First, the result showed that the students got better scores in the posttest than in the pretest. The calculation of paired-sample t-test showed that there was a significant difference in students’ narrative writing achievement before and after the treatment. This showed by the t-obtained (12.042) that was higher than the t-table (2.041). Second, the calculation of paired-sample t-test per aspect of writing showed that content (purpose and narrative development) was the most significantly improved aspect out of the five aspects. In other words, there was a significant improvement in students narrative writing in terms of content (purpose and narrative development) after they were taught by using Theme-Based Approach. Abstract

Abstract: Literacy in the Australian Curriculum is defined in terms of the important role language plays in the construction of meaning in diverse social and cultural contexts and their related situations (ACARA 2013, Halliday & Hasan,1985; Vygotsky,1976). To this end, in this paper we will briefly review some relevant pathways to literacy, namely, the teaching/and learning cycle that informs the literacy pedagogy, and the language learning theories that underpin the accepted literacy approach choices. In addition, this paper will address an important link to literacy, namely, the intercultural understanding general capability. This will be done via a brief coverage of the work of Golding (2005) in relation to his suggestions regarding the development of ‘a thinking classroom’. This will be achieved in an arena that also presents the views of other researchers (Pohl, 2000; Pope & Denicolo, 2001; Arthur, 2005; Lipson, 2006) who also believe in the importance of student and teacher wellbeing in the classroom. It is hoped that the discussions that are covered in this paper will provide a useful review of the relevant literature and related findings. Abstract

Abstract: Teaching classes in which there is a uniformity of learners’ proficiency level is the most ideal environment in language classes since it enables teachers to apply appropriate teaching and learning strategies based on the individual student’s level. However, in EFL settings, most teachers especially in school environments have to teach classes in which the learners have multiple levels of ability, since at schools, there is no placement test on students’ ability of English as is usually done in private language institutions or courses. This paper provides some useful strategies which can be applied by teachers in teaching classes where true and false beginners are within the same class so that by applying these strategies, it is hoped that weaker students may get benefit from interacting with stronger students without holding back the strong ones. Key words:Teaching strategies, large, multi-level classes, EFL teachers

Abstract

Abstract: The significant role of English in the global era triggers many countries to make policies to include English as compulsory subjects for their citizen. However, the existing culture in every country is not necessarily in tandem with the culture that is embedded in English language. This condition may raise many issues that can hamper the teaching-learning process. Through literary studies, this paper explores how English language teaching-learning takes place in Indonesian cultural context and find the issues hampering students to learn English. Among the hampering issues are students’ characteristics, teacher factor, norm and belief, and some language aspects of English. Key words: Culture, norms, belief, English language teaching, language aspects

The data obtained from the tests were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Coefficient on SPSS program for windows. The findings showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ linguistic competence and their speaking performance. The correlation coefficien between linguistic competence and speaking performance was 0.315 and the correlation was low or weak. Furthermore, it was found that the influence of linguistic competence on speaking performance was 9.9 %.
