Abstract

Debate is supposed to be an excelent model of an analytical and communicative process that students learned. In this activity , students have much more opportunities to explore their speaking ability and to share argument critilly and cooperatively. The aim of the research was to describe the application of English debate to enhanced student’s speaking ability. The research design was classroom action research conducted in two cycles with two meeeting each. Each cycles consisted of planning , implementation, observation, and reflection. While for data collection, the research used some intruments i.e observation both in preliminary study and in the action , journal , questionnaire and handy cam. The finding showed that after cycle II was implemented, there were 25  from 34 students who actively participated in the speaking activity , and the average score of the students speaking ability could reach 9 the students questionnaires about the english debate showed that the students felt more confident to speak after the implementation of english debate, and even debate could be very satisfying and entertaining.

Abstract

The study aims at knowing the use of technology in teaching learning process of pre-service teachers of English Study Program of Universitas PGRI Semarang. The subjects of the study are the eight semester students which are Pre-service teachers of the English Study Program of Universitas PGRI Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019. The instrument used in the study is questionnaire. The techniques used in the study are sharing the questionnaire to the eight semester students through WhatsApp to know what kinds of technology used by them are and interview to know how their perception of the use of technology in teaching learning process is. The qualitative data are analyzed by reducing the data, classifying the data and drawing conclusion. The result of the study shows that Pre-service teachers tend to use same kinds of technology in teaching learning process, and they have an opinion that technology is really important for the teachers and for students.

Abstract

This study focuses on the implementation of Project Based Learning (PjBL) in writing greeting card to enhance students’ writing ability and creativity. It is based on the classroom action research at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Sumber, Cirebon, in the academic year of 2019/2020. The subject of the study were 32 students, they were 16 females and 16 males. This study was conducted into two cycles, and each cycle consisted of two meetings. The data were taken qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative data were taken from classroom observation, interview and pictures documentation. While quantitative data were taken from the writing test, including the students’ score on pre-test and post-test in each cycle. The findings showed that the use of PBL was able to enhance students’ writing ability. The implementation of PjBL strengthened students’ creativity since it enabled students to explore themselves while developing the greeting card. They were enthusiastic and active in participating during the teaching and learning process of writing. The findings showed that the students’ mean score in the pre-test was 67,8 and it increased to 94,15 in their post-test with the gain score 26,35, which indicated that the improvement was very significant.

Abstract

This study is an attempt to reveal the implementation of Covid 19 memes in teaching descriptive text for secondary high school students in Tahunan Jepara. In addition, this study also aims to find out the problems the students face during the process of implementing the memes for teaching writing. Since Covid 19 pandemic hinder everyone to gather in a period of time, so it is possible for the researchers to process this research online. It means that the distribution of instrument for collecting the data is done online. The data for this descriptive qualitative study were taken from both the students and the English teacher. 32 students were involved in this study. Questionnaire was distributed to students to gain some information related to the problems they experienced during the process of learning, while indirect interview was given only to the teacher to know how he or she implemented the Covid 19 memes for teaching descriptive text. The data were then processed by elaborating them descriptively. Then, the researchers did data reduction, data display and as final step the researchers draw conclusion of all. The results showed that Covid 19 memes inspired the students for ideas for writing descriptive text. It was exactly 88% students said so. While the rest of 12% said otherwise.  Related to the problems in learning using Covid 19 memes, 78% students did not have any problems with it. While the rest of it said that they had problems in naming the terms (13%), in understanding the meme’s content (6%), and in elaborating ideas in English sentences (3%)

Abstract

Mathematics is a difficult subject and even becomes a phobia, more due to teaching conventionally  in where the teaching and learning process emphasizes more on teacher, working on problems, memorization and speed of arithmetic, so students lack understanding of what they are learning, which in this case does not have an understanding of the concepts taught. Students tends to be lazy and have low motivation to study mathematics both classically and to study independently at home. The growth of information and communication technology in society is reflected in policies to encourage the use of ICT in education and the development of educational multimedia. Multimedia includes using text, images, animation, video and audio to prepare courses for students in various levels of education. Attendance of multimedia technology can help students learn to be more interesting and help students understanding in learning. The purpose of the study was to know whether there was any significant difference in the result between the students of class IV Manyaran 01 Elementary School towards increasing their understanding in math who taught by using the interactive multimedia and who taught by conventionally. The result of the study showed that the interactive multimedia gave an effect to the improvement of the students’ understanding in mathematics.

Abstract

This present study is intended to analyze the dominant type of attitudinal system that expressed by the teacher. This study utilized qualitative method with Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as research design. As for research sampling, this study involved an English teacher and one science class of eleventh grade students in one of secondary school in Majalengka. In order to collect the data, the researcher utilized the instrument of observation. Then, this data were analyzed by using Appraisal Theory that proposed by Martin and Rose (2007). As for the results, this research found that the dominant type of attitudinal system that expressed by the teacher is Affect category. It indicated that both the teacher frequently expressed his opinion, feeling and emotion through their talk. Furthermore, these talks mostly expressed in positive way. It indicated that the teacher always tried to build a positive atmosphere by saying positive talks in order to stimulate the students to become active in the classroom. Therefore, it can be said that it is very important for the teachers to pay more attention in managing their talk since it can affect students’ interaction in the classroom.

Abstract

Learning is a series of complex and systematic activities. There was an interaction between teacher and students in classroom such as delivering material, learning certain subject, discussing for the topics, giving feedback, and becoming a great role model. Teaching and learning are two activities that occur simultaneously. When teaching English in classroom, teachers are adjusted as a center of learning process, they provide all facilities and play important role in classroom activities. Meanwhile conducting distance learning during this pandemic of Covid-19 is based on internet connection. Teachers are required to be literate in technology, moving from traditional teaching method to internet-based teaching method. Abstract

Fraser (1988; 1996; 1999) which are classified EDMs functions as ‘contrastive, ‘elaborative, and ‘inferential. This study designated the use of English discourse markers by University EFL students in writing production. To answer the research question on how do they disclose EDMs in producing writing, the writers employed a qualitative research approach. The object was the documentation of students’ writing result mediated on the writing class. The participants were 38 students of semester III in the academic year 2018/2019. The findings are the contrastive markers are; but 63/instead of 2/whereas 2/however 16/although 2/in the other hand /side 6. The elaborative markers are; and 597/also 105/or 69/for example 27/besides 7/moreover 3/in addition, 24/then 6/likewise 1. The inferential markers are; because 97/so 51/as a result 9/therefore 11/in conclusion 3/then 1. The most functions of discourse markers use by students are; the marker ‘but’ has a meaning ‘on the contrary. The marker ‘and’ has a meaning as ‘in addition’. Students used the marker ‘because’ to indicate ‘for the reason’. The implication of this study is that students need to understand in employing properly English discourse markers to make their writing being cohesive and coherent in texts.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the Auction Grammar Game in improving students’ understanding on simple present tense. This research used pre-experimental method. The population of this research was the whole eighth grade students of SMP Katolik Belibis Makassar which consists of 29 students. By using total sampling technique, this class was taken as a sample which consists of 29 students. Sample of this research was the same with the population because there was only one class for the eighth-grade students of SMP Katolik Belibis Makassar. The data were analyzed by using SPSS Program. The result of this research found that students’ understanding on simple present tense was improved significantly. It can be seen in the result of the students’ mean score in post-test that was higher than pre-test (78.79>35.52). in addition, t-test value was higher than t-table (20.657>2.048). It can be concluded that the Auction grammar game improves students’ understanding on simple present tense.

Abstract

YouTube is not only a platform for entertaining the viewers. Nowadays, language learners can use videos on YouTube as a tool to learn many things dealing with language. One of the benefits of watching YouTube videos is that learners can comprehend pragmatic equivalence. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the English dialogue among the speakers in the YouTube video entitled The Team Meeting and its Indonesian subtitle to reveal the pragmatic equivalence. The analyzed pragmatic element is conversational implicatures. Additionally, the translation strategies used in Indonesian subtitles are also analyzed. To do this, the qualitative methodology, particularly textual analysis is used. With textual analysis, some steps in analyzing the data are needed. First, the English dialogue among the speakers and its Indonesian subtitle are transcribed. Second, translation strategies and pragmatic equivalence are analyzed. Lastly, the data are presented in form of paragraphs. The results show that the translation strategies can assist the English dialogue and its Indonesian subtitle to reach pragmatic equivalence. Borrowing words from English in Indonesian and the same basic structures between both languages generally contribute to this equivalence.
