Abstract

This paper presents the result of a small-scale research which was aimed to find out a model of incorporating character values in English classroom of elementary schools. The government is now campaigning character education that should be incorporated in all subjects through direct and indirect teaching. For subjects such as English, character values need not be taught directly in class, but they are infused during the prosess of teaching and learning.  The question arose among the teachers is how to incorporate character values in the subjects of which content is not particularly set to teaching moral values. The proposed model in this study is by using mini drama performance. The research took place at 4 elementary schools (ES) in Semarang municipality, consisting of 3 public schools and 1 private school. The data were collected from observation and interview with the teachers. The field notes and the results of interview were analyzed descriptively to to portray the existing model of teaching English in general, and teaching character values in particular.

Abstract

The study was conducted to determine the effect of students' interest in learning in the subjects of Creative Products and Entrepreneurship on the achievements of students of class XI SMK Competence in Industrial Electronics Engineering. This research is a quantitative study, quantitative research emphasizes the process so that in seeing the relationship between variables in the object under study are more interactive that is the mutual influence. Subjects studied were the Effect of Entrepreneurial Characteristics on Subjects of Creative Products and Entrepreneurship on the Achievement of Grade XI Students in Industrial Electronics Engineering at SMKN 4 Semarang. The source of data in this study is the XI grade students of Industrial Electronics Engineering at SMKN 4 Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019. With a sample of 70 students to test the increase in learning achievement. This class action research was conducted with the Classroom Action Research method which consisted of 2 cycles. Actions in each cycle are interrelated, The steps of each cycle consist of: Making Planning (planning), carrying out actions according to planned (acting), observing the actions to be performed (Observing), reflecting descriptive comparative (reflecting). Data obtained from test results and questionnaire. The analysis technique used is the Normality Test, R square Test, ANOVA Test to determine the magnitude of the influence of several indicators in the study.

Abstract

Pemerintah Kota Semarang sudah bersusah payah untuk membantu masyarakatnya dalam menanggulangi kemiskinan. Dengan menerbitkan beberapa program pengentasan kemiskinan diharapakan masyarakat bisa terentaskan dari lubang kemiskinan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui model KKN Posdaya MDGs untuk mengentaskan kemiskinan di Kota Semarang yang dilakukan oleh institusi perguruan tinggi Universitas PGRI Semarang. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskripsi R and D (Research and Development) dengan sample adalah 5 kecamatan di Kota Semarang yaitu; Genuk, Gayamsari, Tembalang, Banyumanik dan Pedurungan. Subject dari penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa, DPL, Perangkat Lurah, Perangkat Kecamatan, Pejabat SKPD/Institusi pemerintah dan masyarakat. Hasil penelitan ini adalah bahwa Model KKN Posdaya MDGs Universitas PGRI Semarang memuat program-program dalam rangka mengentaskan kemiskinan seperti; membuat dan memajukan koperasi, membantu meningkatkan usaha peningkatan penghasilan keluarga prasejahtera, membantu usaha peningkatan penghasilan keluarga, dan membangun kelompok usaha bersama, serta mendirikan usaha ekonomi produktif.

Abstract

This study is focused on the Conjunctive Relations found in Oprah Winfrey's speech. In this case, conjunctive relations were analyzed through how Oprah Winfrey realized them. The objectives of this study were (1) to find out types of conjunctive relations found on Oprah Winfrey's speech (2) to find out the dominant type of conjunctive relations found on Oprah Winfrey's speech and what is that mean. To reach those two objectives, the writer used both Halliday and J. R. Martin's theory. There are two categories of conjunction namely external and internal conjunction. Later on, those two categories classified themselves into four types of relations namely additive relation, adversative relation, causal relation, and temporal relation. This study used qualitative design because it is framed in terms of using words instead of numbers. The result showed that there were 106 clauses with conjunctions in Oprah's speech. The internal conjunction found were about 52 clauses, while the external conjunction found were about 16 clauses. Both external and internal conjunction was dominated by the causal relation. The causal relation indicated that Oprah Winfrey used a lot of reasoning because causal relations made her able to convince the audience to believe with her statements. Furthermore, causal relation made her speech seems natural, influential, and emotionally convincing to the hearer.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are (1) to find out the students of speaking skills who are taught using hand puppet. (2) To find out the students of speaking skills who are taught without using hand puppet. (3) To find out any significant difference speaking skills of students who are taught with and without using hand puppet. In order to the objectives of the study, relevant theories were refer to and discussed significance among them were theories of speaking, storytelling, learning media, and hand puppets. Following the presentation of the theoretical frameworks, the research methods were selected. The study used quantitative description with experimental approach.  Based on the data analysis, the research found that the result of the significant difference speaking skill of students who are taught with and without using hand puppets through narrative text. According to statistical calculations, sig. (2-tailed) and with df 33 in significance level 0, 05 t-table = 22.392 with p-value = 0,000 and a = 0, 05. Which is p < a; (0,000 < 0, 05). It proved that Hº was rejected and H¹ accepted.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are1) To know the teaching on reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP PGRI 01 Semarang in academic year 2016/2017, 2) To know the problems faced by the teacher in teaching learning process of reading comprehension, and 3) To know the solutions of the problem faced in teaching learning process. This research uses qualitative method. The subject of this research was three teachers of class VIII A, VIII F, and VIII G. The instruments used in this research were observation sheet and interview, so the data use was collected through observation and interview. The result of the research showed that 1) the first teacher was first participant implementing reading stage in teaching and learning process. In first participant teaching, the researcher found the problem, it was the difficulty in implementing teaching reading. The solution first participant was make strategy to make student fun. 2) the second teacher was second participant. There was only one interaction, that was the teacher explained the materials then the students kept silent, or the students read something then the teachers listened to them. 3) the third teacher was third participant. The problem it was boredom, and the solution was making question and answer for them. Teachers concluded that reading comprehension is very effective but it can not to be the key in teaching and learning process. From the data which is obtained from documentation and observation inteaching English, the objectives of English teaching can be viewed from kinds of strategy and tecnique in teaching and learning process. Suggestion are 1) for teachers, it is better for them to use Team Games Tournament to teach the students in reading comprehension, 2) for students have to study harder and try to read English more and more, and 3) for the reader to be able to get more information and experiences in the purpose of developing and improving their knowledge, especially in reading comprehensio

Abstract

Fraser (1988; 1996; 1999) which are classified EDMs functions as ‘contrastive, ‘elaborative, and ‘inferential. This study designated the use of English discourse markers by University EFL students in writing production. To answer the research question on how do they disclose EDMs in producing writing, the writers employed a qualitative research approach. The object was the documentation of students’ writing result mediated on the writing class. The participants were 38 students of semester III in the academic year 2018/2019. The findings are the contrastive markers are; but 63/instead of 2/whereas 2/however 16/although 2/in the other hand /side 6. The elaborative markers are; and 597/also 105/or 69/for example 27/besides 7/moreover 3/in addition, 24/then 6/likewise 1. The inferential markers are; because 97/so 51/as a result 9/therefore 11/in conclusion 3/then 1. The most functions of discourse markers use by students are; the marker ‘but’ has a meaning ‘on the contrary. The marker ‘and’ has a meaning as ‘in addition’. Students used the marker ‘because’ to indicate ‘for the reason’. The implication of this study is that students need to understand in employing properly English discourse markers to make their writing being cohesive and coherent in texts.

Abstract

Abstract. This is a case study on students’ understanding towards a subject of discourse analysis at English language education study program at University in Indonesia. The goal of this study is to describe the definitions, the examples, and the applications of spoken discourse analysis on their context of English language teaching (ELT). The writers used qualitative research approach to analyze these data through implementing Atlas.ti8 which is known as the tool of analyzing the field qualitative data. The sample was the students of 7th grade semester consisting 30 people. In collecting the data, we used online direct interview in the classroom and by time they replied the questions on the time using the google form by Microsoft. In analyzing the data, we used atlas.ti.8 online to draw the result of the research as followings; that students’ understanding about the definitions of spoken discourse analysis have some various key terms like; -a research method of spoken language, -knowledge of language, how language used, study of language, and study of the texts. Then, its examples are; they can picturize as; speaking on the phone, conversation, interview, putting markers, turn taking, group of discussion, using advertisement, people interaction, joke, speech, also transferring information. Moreover, its applications are such as; communicating with teachers/parents, interacting with students/people, go to the market, baby crying, ceremony, and communicating with friends. The conclusion is that spoken discourse analysis has been understood by students even though it is not easy to define, giving example and declaring the application in the real context English language teaching. Keywords: students’ understanding, spoken discourse analysis, ELT

Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify the kinds of deixes behind the inauguration address of President Joe Biden and to identify the significance of them are shown in the most prevalent deictic words in the Inaugural Speech of Joe Biden. In addition, The study investigates the contribution this research provides to pragmatics teaching. Descriptive qualitative method was employed for data analysis, because it examines the various kinds of deixis seen in this speech. The researchers have written the speech into script, analyzed the deixis utilized, identified the type of deixis, and figure out the deixis contributions in pragmatics class. The findings revealed that three deixis, namely personal, spatial, and temporal deixis were identified in the inauguration address of Joe Biden; Personal deixis (67% data), spatial deixis (21% data) temporal deixis (12% data). After analyzing the three types of deixis in the speech of Joe Biden, the researchers has concluded that in first person deixis the term we become the most commonly used. As President of the United States, he represents the people of the United States in carrying out specified tasks and taking measures that benefit the country. The explanations of deixis also indicated that personal deixis was the most significant type to be found in Joe Biden’s speech inauguration. This research can be utilized by lecturers in particular in the deixis field as teaching material on pragmatics. The research is intended to inform students of the fact that analysis of pragmatics is a solution for those who take a lesson in university Tujuan studi ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis deiksis di balik pidato pelantikan presiden Joe Biden serta mengidentifikasi makna penting yang diperlihatkan dalam kata-kata paling umum dalam pidato pelantikan Joe Biden. Selain itu, dalam studi ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi kontribusi dalam penelitian ini terkait pengajaran pragmatis. Metode deskriptif kualitatif digunakan untuk menganalisis data, karena dalam studi ini mengamati beberapa jenis-jenis deixis dalam pidato tersebut. Peneliti telah menulis pidato kedalam naskah, menganalisis deiksis yang muncul, mengidentifikasi jenis deiksis, dan menemukan kontribusi dalam kelas pragmatik. Hasil dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa terdapat tiga jenis deiksis; personal, spatial, temporal yang telah diidentifikasi. Sebanyak 67% personal deiksis, 21% spatial deiksis, dan 12% temporal deiksis. Setelah menganalisis ketiga tipe deiksis dari pidato Joe Biden, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa dalam personal deiksis, kata we menjadi kata yang sering dipakai. Sebagai presiden Amerika Serikat, Joe Biden mewakili rakyat Amerika Serikat dalam melaksanakan tugas-tugas tertentu dan mengambil Langkah-langkah yang menguntungkan negara. Penjelasan mengenai deiksis juga menunjukkan bahwa personal deiksis adalah jenis yang paling penting dalam penyajian pidato oleh Joe Biden. Penelitian ini dapat digunakan oleh para dosen khususnya di bidang deiksis sebagai bahan pengajaran atas pragmatics. Penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk menginformasikan siswa sebuah fakta bahwa analisis pragmatik adalah sebuah solusi bagi mereka yang mengambil pelajaran di universitas

Abstract

Abstrak: Tujuan  kegiatan pendampingan adalah sebagai berikut; pertama, mensosialisasikan program ‘gerbang hebat’ kampong tematik pemerintah kota semarang tahun 2016-2020. Kedua, melakukan pendampingan kepada warga anggota kampong tematik gumregah kelurahan mlatiharjo. Ketiga, sebagai umpan awal untuk kegiatan yang lebih massif dengan pendanaan CSR BNI cabang semarang. Empat, sebagai kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat bagi dosen untuk mendarmabaktikan ilmu dan keterampilannya bagi masyarakat, bangsa dan negara. Target luaran dari kegiatan pendampingan ini adalah; 1) perubahan mindset warga RW 5 kampong tematik gumregah dari pola pikir masyarakat kumuh menjadi masyarakat yang bersih, hijau dan mandiri, 2) sosialisasi program gerbang hebat kampong tematik kepada masyarakat luas, 3) pelatihan kuliner aneka olahan manisan sebagai ikon potensi local warga mlatiharjo, 4) pelatihan kuliner olahan ketela sebagai pendukung ekonomi keluarga warga mlatiharjo. Manfaat dari kegiatan pendampingan ini adalah warga kampong tematik tersebut sudah mempunyai ketrampilan berwirausaha kuliner aneka olahan manisan dan ketela, warga terbentuk menjadi beberapa kelompok usaha kuliner, perubahan mindset warga dari kampong kumuh dan kotor menjadi kampong yang bersih, hijau dan mandiri/berdikari dengan usaha kuliner yang hebat sehingga mampu menambah penghasilan keluarga.   Â
