Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan: (1) bagaimana penggunaan Small Group Discussion dapat meningkatkan kemampuan ketrampilan membaca siswa dalam materi descriptive text. (2) Kelebihan menggunakan Small Group Discussion dalam pembelajaran penguasaan ketrampilan membaca. Dalam penelitian tindakan kelas ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus pada siswa kelas X MIPA-7 SMA Negeri 11 Semarang. Setiap siklus terdiri dari empat tahapan: perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan, refleksi. Terdapat dua jenis data: data kualitatif dan data kuantitatif. Data kualitatif diperoleh dengan menggunakan lembar pengamatan, wawancara, dan catatan lapangan. Kemudian, data kuantitatif diperoleh menggunakan tes (pre-test dan post-test). Data kualitatif dianalisis menggunakan 5 tahapan yang disarankan oleh Burns (1999: 157-159) yakni sebagai berikut: menghimpun data, mencatat data, membandingkan data, membangun teori, dan melaporkan hasil penelitian. Data kuantitatif dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Small Group Discussion dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam ketrampilan membaca. Selain itu, Small Group Discussion dapat digunakan untuk mendukung guru dalam pengelolaan kelas. Peneliti juga menemukan kelebihan Small Group Discussion dalam pembelajaran ketrampilan membaca. Small Group Discussion tidak hanya membuat suasana kelas menjadi nyaman dan menarik, akan tetapi juga meningkatkan partisipasi siswa dalam berbagi ide dan bertukar informasi dalam pembelajaran ketrampilan membaca descriptive text.

Abstract

Kurangya penguasaan kosakata dalam Bahasa inggris membuat siswa sulit dalam memahami pelajaran Bahasa inggris. Karena itu, peneliti mencoba melakukan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas dengan menggunakan strategi “frontloading” untuk mengembangkan keterampilan siswa dalam kosakata. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah: 1) Untuk membuktikan dalam penelitian tindakan kelas ini memiliki tujuan untuk melihat perkembangan kosakata siswa selama pelajaran “asking and giving opinion” dengan menggunakan "frontloading" strategi. 2) Untuk mengetahui bahwa strategi “frontloading” dapat mempermudah guru untuk mengajar “asking and giving opinion” di kelas dengan memperkaya kosakata peserta didik. Penelitian ini dilakukan dua kali termasuk, siklus 1, dan siklus 2. Pada siklus 1, peneliti memberikan penjelasan tentang meminta dan memberikan pendapat dan meminta siswa dengan strategi “frontloading” untuk menstimulasi pengetahuan mereka dengan beberapa gambar. Untuk membuktikan hasilnya, peneliti melakukan siklus 2. Pada siklus 2, peneliti menanyakan kepada siswa tentang beberapa video. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif dan kuantitatif dalam mengumpulkan data. Data kualitatif dilakukan dengan mengacu pada hasil observasi dan hasil kuantitatif. Data kuantitatif yang dilakukan dari hasil siswa dalam melakukan tes yang dianalisis dengan menggunakan statistik deskriptif. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan "frontloading" mempengaruhi strategi respon siswa yang membuat mereka lebih aktif dan antusias dalam proses pembelajaran.

Abstract

Banyak siswa kurang dalam menulis yang salah satunya disebabkan oleh kebingungan dalam menuangkan ide yang dimiliki. Penelitian Tindakan Kelas ini dimaksudkan sebagai penggunaan Metode Four Square Writing (FSW) untuk mengembangkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis deskriptif teks di kelas X MIPA 6, SMA N 11 Semarang. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menemukan respon siswa terhadap pelajaran dan mendeskripsikan hasil penerapan Metode FSW. Penelitian ini dilakukan selama tiga kali mencakup tes pra-siklus, tes siklus 1, dan tes siklus 2. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah observasi dan tes. Tes digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan siswa dalam menulis deskriptif teks setelah diberi perlakuan, dan observasi digunakan untuk memonitor kegiatan siswa selama proses pembelajaran. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara qualitatif dan quantitatif. Tes Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Metode FSW berpengaruh pada respon siswa menjadi lebih aktif dan antusias dilihat dari persentase pengamatan di pra-siklus 40%, siklus 1 71,43%, dan siklus 2 85,71%. Peningkatan respon siswa dalam proses pembelajaran menjadikan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis deskriptif teks pun meningkat. Hasil tersebut dapat dilihat dari hasil tes pra-siklus yang belum memenuhi KKM dengan persentase 11,11%. Dalam setiap siklus terjadi peningkatan yang cukup signifikan dimana hasil dari tes siklus 1 menjadi 63,89% dan tes siklus 2 menjadi 91,67%. Berdasarkan data yang diperoleh, disimpulkan bahwa Metode Four Square Writing dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa kelas X MIPA 6, SMA N 11 Semarang dalam menulis deskriptif teks.

Abstract

The study aims at knowing the use of technology in teaching learning process of pre-service teachers of English Study Program of Universitas PGRI Semarang. The subjects of the study are the eight semester students which are Pre-service teachers of the English Study Program of Universitas PGRI Semarang in the academic year 2018/2019. The instrument used in the study is questionnaire. The techniques used in the study are sharing the questionnaire to the eight semester students through WhatsApp to know what kinds of technology used by them are and interview to know how their perception of the use of technology in teaching learning process is. The qualitative data are analyzed by reducing the data, classifying the data and drawing conclusion. The result of the study shows that Pre-service teachers tend to use same kinds of technology in teaching learning process, and they have an opinion that technology is really important for the teachers and for students.

Abstract

To be effective in teaching vocabulary, teachers must identify, use, and be creative in their methods. The English teacher should employ the proper teaching technique to tackle the problem of mastering vocabulary using the Show and the Tell method. This study was purposefully intended to look into the following topics: 1) the students’ vocabulary mastery before they were taught by using Show and Tell Method 2) the students’ vocabulary mastery after they were taughtwhatwiut using Show and Tell Method 3) the significant improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery after using Show and Tell Method. It was a quasi-experimental study that used a pretest-posttest control group research design. The sample of the research is two claClassessess research, the researchers choose tclassesass consists list VII A 27 st,udstudentsnd VII B 26 students. The test was employed as a datgatheringng instrument, and it was in the form of a test that included a pre-test and a post-test. Both the experimental and control groups were given the test. Based on the findings of data analysis using the normality, homogeneity tests, anthatteststst. It can be concluded the alternative hypothesis was accepted while the null hypothesis was rejected. It means there were significant differences in vocabulary before and afteusinged the show and tells method for the first grade Junior High School (SMP) Negeri 4 Juwana. Furthermore, tusesed of the Show and Tell Method was important teaching vocabulary mastery because could help motivate vocabularies show and tell method; vocabulary mastery; in students of junior high school.

Abstract

Tujuan dari pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah memperkenalkan guru taman kanak-kanak (TK) pada nursery rhymes sebagai media dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris bagi anak-anak TK. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilakukan dengan adanya hasil observasi dan survey yang dilakukan oleh tim pengabdian pada beberapa TK di kelurahan Sukorejo-Gunungpati, Jawa Tengah. Survey sebelumnya menungkap bahwa para guru TK masih menggunakan media gambar sederhana dan metode dril dalam memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris ke siswa mereka. Sayangnya, para guru TK tersebut masih melakukan kesalahan dalam pengucapan selama praktik drilling. Untuk itulah, penting untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Dengan melakukan serangkaian pelatihan, tim pengabdi kepada masyarakat mengajak dua puluh guru TK yang dating dari beberapa TK di Sukorejo untuk berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan ini. Berdasarkan hasil pelatihan yang telah dilaksanakan, para guru TK sangat tertarik pada penggunaan nursery rhymes dalam memperkenalkan bahasa Inggris bagi siswa mereka. Hal ini dikarenakan para guru menganggap bahwa nursery rhymes merupakan media yang sangat tepat dan cocok dengan karakter siswa di TK. Dalam sesi praktik, para guru TK dapat mengimplementasikan bagaimana menggunakan nursery rhymes di kelas mereka. Hal ini menunjukan bahwa kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat berjalan dengan baik.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to (1) investigate the types of figurative language used in the novel Miles Morales: Spider-Man, (2) describe the meaning of figurative language conveyed in Miles Morales: Spider-Man novel, (3) identify what figurative language is used has the most appearances in Miles Morales: Spider-Man novels (4) find out his contribution to education. Researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. The research data is figurative language in a novel entitled "Miles Morales: Spider-Man" by Jason Reynold. Data collection techniques use documentation. At the same time, data analysis is done by identifying figurative language, classification, interpretation, analysis, and conclusion. The study results in mentioning seven figures of speech found in the novel "Miles Morales: Spider-Man" by Jason Reynold, namely metaphor, hyperbole, personification, irony, simile, repetition, and metonymy. The researcher concludes that figurative language has the most appearances in the novel "Miles Morales: Spider-Man" by Jason Reynold.

Abstract

The aim of this research is (1) to find out the writing ability taught using folklore videos without small group discussion, (2) to find out the writing ability taught using folklore videos and small group discussion, (3) to find out whether any significant difference writing abilities of the eleventh-grade students of MA Abwabun Nurul Maghfiroh Mranggen Demak taught using folklore videos without small group discussion and those taught using folklore videos and small group discussion. In this research, quantitative was applied to analyze data, including a control class and experimental class in eleventh-grade students of MA Abwabun Nurul Maghfiroh Mranggen Demak 2023. Quantitative research requires the researcher to determine the significant relationship between the independent and dependent variables. In this study, the researcher attended two classes: one was an experimental class taught using folklore videos complemented with small group discussion, and the other was a control class taught using folklore videos without small group discussion. This research uses statistics to analyze statistical data formulas, specifically SPSS. The results showed that (1) the Writing ability of the students taught using folklore videos without small group discussion showed that the mean score on the pretest was 67.93 (Good Level) and the mean score on the post-test was 75,34 (Good level) and then (2) Writing ability of the students taught using folklore videos and small group discussion showed that was means score of the pretest was 64.47 (Good Level), and post-test was 81.83 (Excellent Level) and (3) Difference of Writing ability in narrative text taught using folklore videos without small group discussion and taught complemented small group discussion. Based on the SPSS 2.6 normality test, the researcher can determine that the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Saphiro-Wilk tests provide two values of Sig > 0.05. As a result, the researcher might conclude that H0 cannot be accepted and that the data do not belong to a normal distribution. Thus, the researcher must identify significant differences using the Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests. The results of the Wilcoxon test (The value of Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) is found to be 0.000) and Mann Whitney test (Asymp. Sig (2-tailed) is worth 0.002 less than 0.05). The result is significant and effective.

Abstract

. In the 21st century the implementation of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is a fundamental aspect in English Language Teaching (ELT). Canva is one of alternative free application that can be used by both students and teachers in English learning process. This study aimed to find out students’ perspective in creating comic strip of recount text by using Canva. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this study is eighth-B grade students of SMP Negeri 36 Semarang. The participants were given a questionnaire consisted of two indicators namely perceived excitement and perceived easy to use and usefulness. The first indicator concluded students happy in using Canva, learning recount text by creating comic strip in Canva is interesting, students motivated to study more about recount text when using Canva, the images, font, colours in Canva are very attractive, and students exited to use Canva outside of learning process. Then, the second indicator concluded that students can use Canva, creating comic strip of  recount text by using Canva is easy, the comic strip template on Canva helps students to create products in learning recount text, Canva is one of the best alternative in learning application and they want to explore Canva more. Moreover to explore the detailed perspective, the researchers held interview. The data interview showed there are several reasons why they are happy in using Canva. It because this application can be accessed for free. They can also download and used it easily in their smartphone.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the result of the pronunciation skills of students in Junior High School before and after being given treatment using the tongue twister technique through the Twistify application. The populations in this research were students of class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Tayu, Pati, Central Java, Indonesia. The sample consisted of 34 students from class VIII B. The researcher used pre-experimental and implemented one group pre-test and post-test design. Based on the results, there was an increase in students’ pronunciation skills from the pre-test with a mean score of 58.35 to the post-test with a mean score of 80 and an increase from the pre-test to the post-test by 37.10%. From the data calculation, the researcher found that the t-test result was 46.442, and the value of df (degree of freedom) was 33. The t-table value was obtained from df = 33 so that t-table = 2.035, so (t0 > tt), 46.442 > 2.035. The Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, and the Null Hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Thus, there was a significant difference between students’ pronunciation skills before and after being given treatment using the tongue twister technique through the Twistify application.
