Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the difficulties teachers face in integrating ICT into the teaching and learning English at Islamic Junior High School. As an example, learning innovations that use ICT are no longer in phase 4.0, but are now in phase 5.0, which means that ICT is being used in all fields. Following these advancements, the integration of ICT in education has become a necessity in today's world. As a result, this fact necessitates that teachers be capable of using ICT in the classroom. However, in the field, researchers discovered a number of barriers to teachers' use of ICT in the classroom. This study takes a qualitative approach:   case study. This researh focuses on observations and interviews with one English teacher in order to obtain more detailed results. This study's informant is an English teacher. The lack of training on integrating ICT into the teaching and learning process of English in the classroom, competencies, equipment, computer support, time management, and technical skills were all identified as barriers to English teachers integrating ICT. The results suggest that teachers encounter difficulties and barriers when attempting to integrate ICT into the classroom's English teaching and learning process.

Abstract

We as humans often use language as a bridge to connect and communicate with each other. Globalization has played a role in bridging the gap through languages acknowledged around the globe, one of these that took center stage in becoming a truly global language is the English language. One of the biggest benefactors of a global language is the mobile device. however, mobile devices would be able to play the role of cementing the English language in its importance. Therefore, this research aimed to learn how effectively can the perception of mobile devices be helped in learning the English Language, with the research focusing on higher educational environments such as university students in Batam City. This research was quantitative research using the Technology Acceptance Model and had dependent variables covering attitude towards using, and the behavioral intention of using. A total of 384 Respondent’s data was collected for this research. In the end, the conclusion was that Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is proven to be effective in affecting those that used it. However, this would not discredit those that didn’t have the intention to learn through a mobile device in the first place or those without a mobile device.

Abstract

This study was aimed at describing the integration of Islamic values in the process of learning at Higher Education. This research focus was on developing material trough Flip book which integrated Islamic values in higher education. The study was research development. This study aimed to develop learning material that was suitable for use in higher education trough flip book for higher education. This research is classified as Research and Development (RD) research with ADDIE procedures consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Evaluation. This research was limited to the development stage. The results of this research were performed as follows. First, the integration of Islamic values and lesson plans were done in the sections of instructional objectives and in the instructional materials. Second, the integration of Islamic values and material developments were done through several ways such as: (a) adding the exercise reflecting the Islamic values to the topic presented, (b) modifying the Islamic names of people, place and events (c) embedding the verses Al-Qur’an to the suitable materials (d) mixing Islamic expressions and the relevant English expressions with the main materials. Third, the integration of Islamic values and the English teaching learning activities were: (a) by conducting code mixing and code switching between English and the Islamic expressions, (b) linking to the topic discussed to the verses of Al-Qur’an, (c) using Islamic names for people.

Abstract

As new approach of language teaching, translanguaging has become a popular topic and widely debated in applied linguistic for the last few years. This study explored educators’ perspective about the use of translangaging as practical pedagogy in EFL classroom in relation to their position that play a significant role in shifting educational practices. The research data was taken in the form of quantitative and qualitative using questionnaires and interview with participants by involving 15 English educators of Higher Education in Jakarta. The findings revealed positive outlooks on the use translanguaging as pedagogical practices in EFL that gave them opportunities rather as weaknesses like lack of proficiency. In addition, the educators also expressed various perceptions about language as separated system, language mixing, and language as single system that support each other.

Abstract

Instagram is a popular social media among young people, particularly students. It can be used for students to share their most memorable moments and improve their writing skills. The students may compose a narrative and publish it on Instagram. The teacher can then evaluate their creative writing. This study aims to analyze how Instagram digital poster projects can help students improve their writing skills. To support this analysis, the researchers utilized a qualitative methodology and applied the Teaching by Principle theory by H. Douglas Brown and Heekyong Lee and the New Media theory by J. Van Dijck and T. Poell. The scope of the study was derived from the writing of SMK Binakarya Mandiri Bekasi students and some supporting articles. There were three participants included in this study. This study's findings show that students can improve creative digital poster project on their Instagram accounts.

Abstract

Some of the obstacles faced in learning during the pandemic are the learning that is applied does not activate students, students do not understand concepts, students are not disciplined in doing assignments, students only wait for material from the teacher. Selection of appropriate learning techniques is very important. The use of the calling a friend learning technique will make it easier for students to be more active in practicing speaking and listening. The purpose of the study is to provide an overview of the application of learning by using the calling a friend learning technique in character learning for students at SMPI Luqman Al Hakim Sumenep. Describes how to improve student learning achievement in listening and speaking by using the calling a friend learning technique at SMPI Luqman Al Hakim Sumenep. The research method is descriptive qualitative with the aim of getting an overview of the application of the Audio-Lingual Method, especially through a calling a friend learning technique. The research was carried out in Class VII SMP Luqman Al Hakim who applied the technique of calling a friend in learning English speaking and listening for 6 meetings. The research subjects were 2 English teachers and 40 seventh grade students. The results of the research using the calling a friend technique can improve the character of students, especially responsibility and discipline, even though the learning process is carried out online and is not directly monitored by the teacher. The percentage of learning achievement was 47.5% after the first cycle changed to 62.5%, in the second cycle it increased to 70% and reached 80% in the third cycle, meaning that student learning achievement has increased.

Abstract

One of the most difficult language skills to master is speaking. This also applied to SMAN 1 Pomalaa. The English teacher of the school stated that the speaking skills of the second-grade students" of the school is fairly bad. They are not able to answer simple questions in English. This was the reason the researcher wanted to find out the problems that were faced by students in speaking English at the second-grade of SMAN 1 Pomalaa. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. The subjects were 20 students of the second-grade class. The researcher gathered data by distributing questionnaires and then interviewing the students to answer the research questions. The findings of the research showed that the students had problems in two categories, namely linguistic and psychological. The former consisted of the lack of vocabulary mastery (2.9), poor grammar mastery (2.9), and poor pronunciation (2.9). Meanwhile, the latter consisted of the lack of self-confidence (3.2) and anxiety (2.9). Furthermore, the most dominant problem is the lack of self-confidence and anxiety.

Abstract

Teaching English in Vocational Higher Education are designed not only to achieve students’ competence in obtaining English for academic matters but also to achieve skilled aspect for preparing learners in the industrial field, especially in writing skill. Thus, effective strategies should be delivered to achieve the goals of gaining students’ competence in writing skills. One of the strategies implemented is topic types which are expected to enhance students writing skills. This study is designed by using the library research method, which claimed that this topic types strategy might encourage students to generate ideas especially to help them in managing ideas before writing.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out and describe about students’ perception toward Memrise application as Media in Learning Vocabulary at seventh grade school SMP N 62 BATAM. The participants are students at VII grade of SMP N 62 BATAM. This research is prepared based on field data using Qualitative research. Method data collection in this research was conducted by using questionnaire and interview. As for the data analysis technique, the researcher used data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The finding is students’ perception toward Memrise application as Media in Learning Vocabulary get positive perception and can help improve vocabulary mastery for English lesson. Memrise application gives so many benefits for the students. Beside this application easily to operate, Memrise application also has interesting feature. The lesson material from Memrise application is easy to understand by students and through Memrise application, students have more spirit to learn vocabulary in English and their phone is not only for playing game but they can use it for study.

Abstract

This research analyzes imagery in Robert Frost selected poetry. This research aimed to find out what are the types of imagery and how many imageries used by Robert Frost in selected poetry, they are “Lost in Heaven”, “Desert Places” and “Leaves compared with Flower” based on the theory of Sayuti (2010) for analyzing the types of imagery. There are six types of imagery according to Sayuti namely visual imagery, auditory imagery, olfactory imagery, gustatory imagery, kinesthetic imagery, and tactile imagery. Then, the data were analyzed by using the qualitative descriptive method. This research found visual imagery, auditory imagery, kinesthetic imagery, and tactile imagery, which are presented in twenty- seven (27) data from three poems. The researcher found 27 data categorized into types of imagery, which consist of 13 visual images, 11 kinesthetic images, 2 auditory images, 1 tactile image. Robert Frost mostly uses visual imagery in selected poems.
