Abstract

Advancing students' writing skill as one of the benchmarks for the quality of literacy requires practical learning innovation. One of the models offered in this study was realia in English as a foreign language class. This research was conducted to determine if realia as a learning medium was effective to improve the students' descriptive writing ability. Quantitative was the design of this research in the form of a pre-experiment. The sample of this study consists of 19 students, 9 for male students, and 10 for female students. They were class eight at SMPI Al A'roof, Loceret, Nganjuk. The study was for three weeks and conducting five meetings. Two meetings are for collecting the data on the pre-test and post-test, and three meetings are to provide treatment to the students using realia as a learning medium in a descriptive writing class. The assessment criteria carried out include content, style, and mechanics. The data analysis indicated that the students' descriptive text writing achievement improved significantly. Therefore, it could be concluded that teaching realia writing helped develop the students' descriptive writing skills.

Abstract

This study was a descriptive study aimed at describing the the quality of the  textbook entitled,  “When English Rings The Bell” for Junior High School Students Year VII in providing English teaching material to improve students’ English Knowledge competence.The researcher analyse this book based on the theory from Howard and Major (2010) about good teaching material in English language teaching. The subject of this study is the textbook entitled, “When English Rings The Bell” for Junior High School Students Year VII”. The sources of data  of this study were collected by questionnaire and interview from respondents. The respondents were one english teachers from SMP 1 Padang and SMP 31  Padang.  The result of this study showed that the respondents had same perception that the quality of the textbook entitled,  “When English Rings The Bell” for Junior High School Students Year VII was poor in providing the English Teaching Material to improve students’ knowledge about WH questions.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out the system network of saying text in the newspaper of “Metro Tabagsel”. It was analyzed by analyzing speech function and its moods. Data was taken from texts found in Daily Metro Tabagsel which published in 1 February 2016. In analyzing the data, descriptive analysis was used. to draw the realization of speech function to its mood. The data analysis was formulated in some steps as identifying texts in Daily Metro Tabagsel; identifying the saying texts in Daily Metro Tabagsel, The realization of speech functions in mood in the text. The result shows that the dominant speech function of statement more than 30% includes into Information which is 31.25%. It is followed by Affirmation and Fury type of statement which have 12.5%. While the clarification, suggestion, achievement, Aim, threat,Promise and  hope placed in the last rank which has 6.25%, It is indicated that this text always using information in the newspaper.

Abstract

EFL textbooks should be valued based on their visual illustration and based on their cultural background and goals of EFL learning. The study aimed to report the results of a textbook analysis to identify which type of culture and what themes of culture were introduced in the tenth graders of Indonesian senior high school. Theory of cultures proposed by Cortazzi Jin (1999) and Chen Lee (2004) were adapted for examining specific aspects of culture under formal culture and aspects of life culture. The analysis revealed that the percentage of source culture (45,7%) and unidentified culture (42,9%) is the same in the textbook. The textbook was dominated by source culture content among identified cultural content, while international culture (5,7%) and target culture (5,7%) contained a small percentage. It was also found out that among the 19 cultural themes under formal culture and aspects of life culture, the researcher found four themes such as lifestyle, gestures, and holiday under aspects of life culture and only history under formal culture. The predominant theme was aspects of life culture of lifestyle.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to find out whether (1)  significant effect on students reading comprehension (2) PQ4R strategy give better effect in reading comprehension of students with motivation (3) interaction between PQ4R strategy and students reading motivation toward students’ reading comprehension. This type of research is experimental research with a 2x3 factorial design. The sample in this study students of class IX SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Padang was the IX IPS1 as the experimental class using the PQ4R and the IX IPS3 class as the control class using the conventional. The instruments is  the Reading Comprehension Test and the Questionnaire of Reading Motivation. The prerequisite test includes the normality test using the Lilliefors method and the homogeneity test using the Bartlett method. It can be concluded that the sample comes from a population that is normally distributed and has homogeneous variance. Hypothesis testing uses two-way analysis of variance with different cells. The results: (1) there is an effect reading comprehension of students who are given PQ4R and conventional model. (2) reading comprehension of students who have low, medium and high learning motivation have the same. (3) There is  interaction between the learning model and reading motivation.

Abstract

The research about the use of corpus-based approach in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to improve the students' vocabulary mastery has been conducted by many researchers. However, the product of the materials in teaching and learning vocabulary which laverages the use of corpus is very limited. For that reason, this study is aimed to design a prototype of English vocabulary workbook for Hospitality students based on corpus-based approach in determining the content, task, and activities carried out. This research uses Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model as the procedure to create a valid, practical, and effective English vocabulary workbook for Hospitality students and corpus-based approach will be used in determining the target words, task, and activities in the workbook. Based on the result of analysis using Wilcoxon test,  it can be seen that the Asymp.Sig (2-tailed) is 0.000. As the value of 0.000 is smaller than 0.05, it can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the results of student learning before and after using the workbook developed.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the types of learning styles that students have. The populations in this study were students from grade 7 and 8, with a total of 29 students. This research was conducted at SMP IT Ar-Risalah, Batam. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. In data collection, the researchers used questionnaires and documents. The questionnaire in this study was used to determine which learning styles the students dominated in the learning process. The results of the analysis of the students' learning styles showed that there were 21 (84%) students categorized as visual learners, 1 (4%) students were categorized as auditory learners, and 4 (12%) students were categorized as auditory learners .The result of this research show that there is any significant Influence of Student Learning Style on  their English Learning Achievements. The calculation using One Way Anova  can be obtained the level of  F was 533 with degree of freedom (df1)=17  degree of  freedoms (df2)=7 . Level of significance probability was 0.00 smaller than 0.05. Its mean that the strength of correlation coefficient between two variable came in good correlation and it is positive influence.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to explore the type of word-formation process in Selected Lyrics Written by Asian Songwriters. The form of this research was a qualitative method thus the result was conducted in descriptive. The data were taken by sorting out the English song written by Asian songwriters which were released around 2018-2021 and have at least 3 million listeners on an online streaming platform then making the transcript of the lyrics. The focus of this research is to find out and analyze word-formation process using Yule's theory (2010) and Plag (2002) as supporting theories. As the result, there are 8 processes of word-formation, and the most prominent lyrics are formed through Inflectional with 45 data then followed by Compounding 27 data, Derivation 25, Multiple Processing 24 data, Clipping 11 data, Blending 8 data then Acronym and Conversion that has 6 data of each.

Abstract

This research aims at designing learning media named RO-LEX for Dyslexic Students and ease the students in learning English. It focuses only on reading skill. The research method used is Research and Development (RD) using Borg and Gall model that consists of ten procedures, they are: 1) Research and Information Collecting, 2) Planning, 3) Develop Preliminary Form of Product, 4) Preliminary Field Testing, 5) Main Product Revision, 6) Main Field Testing, 7) Operational Product Revision, 8) Operational Field Testing, 9) Final Product Revision, and 10) Dissemination and Implementation. From the processes conducted, the researcher got the results of the research. 1) The result of material validation is 80 (very good category), 2) The result of media validation is 69 (good category), 3) The result of dyslexic expert was 59 (good category). Based on the results, the researcher concluded that this RO-LEX application is deserved to be used for dyslexic students as an English learning media.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the students' view on the use of learning aids to support students in online learning such as lecture videos, PowerPoint, and Google Meet. It is also to investigate student outcomes by using lecture videos and other aids. The quantitative design is used with open-ended questions and Likert questions to get students' views related to the learning aids and summative assessment to know the student outcomes after using the learning aids. The number of students involved was 21 students of the English Literature Program at STBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru in the 2021/2022 academic year. The study showed that most students found that lecture videos were the most helpful aid for them to support in comprehending the material followed by PowerPoint and Google Meet. Then, the student outcomes were better after studying from lecture videos and supported by PowerPoint and Google Meet. This study perhaps can shed some light on other lecturers using multiple media in delivering the material.
