Abstract

Background: Post-stroke patient depression can result in delays in stroke recovery and healing. The degree of severity of stroke will cause neurological deficits which can become stressors that will affect individual coping mechanisms. Objective: This research aims to analyze factors associated with non-hemorrhagic post-stroke depression. Methods: Analytical observational with a cross-sectional approach. The research was conducted at the Neurology Clinic of RSUD dr. R. Goeteng Taroenadibrata Purbalingga. The population is 435 post-stroke non-hemorrhagic patients. The sample is 104 respondents with the sampling technique used consecutive sampling. The instruments used were the Brief COPE, NIHSS, and PHQ-9. Bivariate analysis used the Kendall-Tau correlation test. Results: The majority of respondents were elderly, male, primary school education level/equivalent, married, live with husband/wife and children, left hemisphere lesion location, had stroke duration >2 years, did not experience recurrent strokes, hypertension, had problem-focused coping and mild stroke severity with varying degrees of depression. Age, gender, marital status, living together, location of the lesion, duration of stroke, stroke frequency, comorbidities and coping mechanisms were not significantly related (p>0.05) while education level and stroke severity was significantly associated with post-stroke depression (p<0,05).Conclusions: There is a significant relationship between education level and severity of stroke with post-stroke depression. Nurses can also motivate patients to always take medication regularly, increase patient knowledge about stroke and depression, or implement non-pharmacological therapy such as Range of Motion (ROM) so that they can help reduce the severity of a stroke and prevent or reduce the occurrence of depression after non-hemorrhagic stroke.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents losing their parents is the worst event they experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adolescents raise a traumatic response after a loss occurs. Objective: This study aims to explore the description of the condition of adolescents in dealing with the loss of parents due to COVID-19.Methods: Qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach. The number of participants is 12 people with the criteria of youth aged 10-19 years consisting of men and women who have lost their parents due to COVID-19. Interview data were processed using the Colaizzi technique. Results: Four themes through the theme analysis, namely adolescents are not ready to face sudden loss, adolescents experience suffering due to the loss of parents, adolescents find it difficult to go through the loss process, and changes occur in adolescents due to the loss of parents. Conclusion: The findings of this study show that the sudden loss of parents due to COVID-19 harms adolescent mental health. As a result, mental health nurses in the community need to detect adolescents early for signs of stress and anxiety due to the loss of parents and take steps to strengthen adolescents' self-defense after loss.

Abstract

Background: Gender stereotypes influence women and men who work as nurses. In education setting, the dominance of female nurses has been challenging given their respective roles in management and leadership, both professionally and personally. Objective: To explore the experience and synthesise available literature on female nurse leaders in the academic settings. Methods: Systematic review of qualitative study on any type of qualitative from academic database: ProQuest, PubMed, CINAHL, and MEDLINE was conducted. Starting from 1st January 1990 to 31 December 2021. The criteria; freely accessible, complete in terms of content, authored, published in the English language, and combination of keywords including nurse, nursing, faculty, dean, head, and director were applied. The review was reported following PRISMA format. The studies included were assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Program tool (CASP) 2017.Results: The screening process resulted in the selection of fourteen (14) studies from the USA, Canada, UK, and Australia that used a range of qualitative methodologies, including descriptive explorative, phenomenology, grounded theory, feminist research, case studies, and a number of data collection techniques, including open-surveys, interviews, field notes, campus observations, document analysis, and analytic memos. Thematic analyses were applied and yielded six main themes: dealing with power imbalance and gender discrimination; addressing problems related to people; disruption in fulfilling leadership roles; leadership personalities; people-oriented leadership quality; and change-oriented leadership quality. Conclusion: Female faculty leaders in nursing reported a variety of personal and professional challenges. The existing literature scarcely captured the gender-specific challenges encountered, including gender stereotyping, and struggle to balance their personal and professional life. Therefore, it is crucial that nurses provide chances for the following leaders in order to enhance nursing education, support the process of leadership regeneration, and develop the profession.

Abstract

Background: The challenge of fatigue significantly affects children undergoing cancer treatment, impacting their overall well-being and quality of life. Unlike their healthy counterparts, pediatric cancer patients grapple with the demanding impacts of chemotherapy, leading to anemia and nutritional deficiencies that exacerbate fatigue. Beyond fatigue, chemotherapy alters appetite, nutrient utilization, and mental function. Fatigue's multidimensional impact, marked by reduced energy and increased need for rest, can detrimentally affect the quality of life for pediatric patients. Understanding these challenges is essential for devising tailored strategies that comprehensively address the unique needs of children undergoing cancer treatment, enhancing their overall well-being and quality of life. Objective: This research aims were to determine the relationship between anemia and nutritional status with the occurrence of fatigue in children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy at Dharmais Cancer Hospital in Jakarta. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study conducted in August 2022 included a sample of 24 children selected through accidental sampling. Demographic and disease characteristics, such as age, gender, cancer type, cancer stage, and treatment duration, were collected through a questionnaire. Anemia was determined by hemoglobin levels (<12 mg/dl), and nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index. Fatigue was measured with tailored instruments for different age groups: the Parent Fatigue Scale (PFS) for children under 7 years and the Child Fatigue Scale (CFS) for those aged 7 years and older. Statistical analyses included univariate assessment, bivariate analysis with the chi-square test, and logistic regression. Results: Demographic analysis revealed a predominantly male sample (70.8%) with a significant adolescent presence (41.7%) and a prevalence of leukemia (37.5%). Most participants were in early cancer stages (58.3%), undergoing treatment for over a year (62.5%). Anemia was common (54.2%), and 58.3% were underweight. High fatigue prevalence was observed (62.5%). Chi-square analysis found no significant gender or cancer stage differences in fatigue. Age and treatment duration showed no significant associations with fatigue. Logistic regression revealed a significant association between anemia and fatigue in the first model (p = 0.022, Exp. B = 0.104). The second model, incorporating nutritional status, showed a non-significant relationship with anemia but a notable association with normal nutritional status and fatigue (p = 0.022, Exp. 0.059). This underscores the crucial role of nutritional interventions in mitigating fatigue. Conclusion: This study highlights a significant relationship between anemia and nutritional status with fatigue in children undergoing chemotherapy. These findings underscore the importance of considering anemia and nutritional interventions when providing care to pediatric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Nurses play a vital role in addressing these concerns and enhancing the overall well-being of children with cancer.
