Abstract

This study aims to examine how Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) manage and redesign their curricula to respond to the challenges of modernization and social change. The present study employs a qualitative research method of a phenomenological nature. This study was conducted at two educational institutions: the Pondok Pesantren Nurul Ummah Kotagede and the Pondok Pesantren Kotagede Hidayatul Mubtadi'ien (PPKHM). The informants in this study consist of the head of the Madrasah Diniyah, the deputy head of the curriculum department of the Madrasah Diniyah, and teachers at the Madrasah Diniyah. The data collection techniques employed in this study encompass in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and document analysis. The data analysis techniques employed the phenomenological data analysis model of Moustakas through researcher reflexivity, textual description, structural description, and extracting the 'essence' of informants' experiences, which reveal "what" and "how" they experience a phenomenon or concept under study. The research findings indicate that the modernization of management and curriculum design in Islamic education at Islamic boarding schools involves: Firstly, the integration of an educational system that combines the salafiyah (traditional) boarding school typology, which focuses on bandongan, sorogan, memorization, and learning methods based on the Kitab Kuning ‘Classical Islamic Texts’ as the primary reference in learning activities at the boarding school, with the Madrasah Diniyah Takmiliyah educational system, which has classical-based learning and includes levels and stages in the learning process, namely I'dad, Ula or Awwaliyah, Wustho, and Ulya, is of particular interest. Secondly, the institution has initiated a practice-based learning program for final-year students. This program is facilitated through community service, specifically via the PKR (Ramadan Activity Program). Additionally, the institution holds religious study sessions with the objective of developing knowledge and religious education for the community.

Abstract

Universities are required to implement inclusive design. However, many universities have not yet implemented it, and Islamic universities are no exception. Starting from the perspective of Henri Lefebvre's theory of space, this research aims to look at the spatial arrangements for inclusive mosques for people with disabilities on Islamic universities in Yogyakarta, namely how the implementation of inclusive infrastructure facilities in their representational spaces, as well as elaborating the extent to which the ideal spirit of Islam as raḥmatan lil-'ālamīn encourages inclusive spatial practices. This type of research is categorized as non-doctrinal with a sociological and conceptual approach. This research concludes: First, Islamic universities in Yogyakarta do not have specific rules and policies related to spatial mosques that are inclusive of people with disabilities. Second, most of the mosques on Islamic universities in Yogyakarta have fulfilled some accessibility criteria but not up to optimal access (full access). Mosques on Islamic universities in Yogyakarta are at the partial access level. Although both are at the partial access level, each mosque on the Islamic university in Yogyakarta has certain notes. Mosques on the universities of Universitas Islam Negeri Sunan Kalijaga, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama are considered to have higher accessibility features compared to mosque at Universitas Islam Indonesia which appear to be filled with many obstacles. Third, the value of raḥmatan lil-'ālamīn in these Islamic universities does not seem to fully encourage inclusive spatial practices and instead shows discriminative architecture that results in socio-spatial injustice for people with disabilities.

Abstract

This article explores the synergy between Islamic religious education and Javanese philosophy, specifically the values of tepa selira (empathy and tolerance) and cablaka (honesty and openness), as a strategy to foster the mental health of Generation Z students. Amid the rapid wave of digitalization and social pressures affecting today’s youth, mental health has become a critical issue that can no longer be overlooked. Generation Z, living in an instant and highly competitive environment, is vulnerable to stress, anxiety, and identity crises. Therefore, an educational approach is needed one that not only emphasizes cognitive religious aspects but also considers emotional and social balance. This study uses a qualitative approach through a literature review and critical analysis of sources related to Islamic education, educational psychology, and Javanese culture. The findings show that tepa selira cultivates students’ empathy, social awareness, and emotional regulation skills. Meanwhile, cablaka encourages the courage to express oneself honestly and supports psychological well-being. These two values align with Islamic teachings on noble character and inner balance, making them highly relevant for integration into the Islamic Religious Education curriculum. This integration allows students to develop mental health not only through spiritual rituals but also through cultural values. Javanese-philosophy-based Islamic religious education has the potential to become a contextual, humanistic educational model that addresses the essential aspects of youth development in the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of power and obedience in the kiai-santri relationship as represented in the Malaysian series Bida'ah, by emphasizing the pesantren institution as a space for the production of symbolic power. The focus of this study is in the realm of sociology of power, media, and religious culture. This research is important because media representations play a role in shaping public perceptions of traditional authority structures in Malay Islam. The research method used is qualitative-ethnographic with a sociological-cultural approach, through narrative observation of the Bida’ah series and in-depth interviews with seven alumni of pesantren salaf in Jember, East Java. The results show that the kiai figure is represented as a symbolic power center with inviolable spiritual-charismatic authority, while santri show structural and emotional obedience within a patron-client framework. Non-verbal communication symbols and a culture of “pekewuh” reinforce this structure of domination. The findings also show symbolic resistance and reinterpretation of values by santri as a form of negotiation against the kiai's authority. This research contributes to broadening the understanding of power relations in traditional Islamic education and how popular media reproduce or criticize these structures. The findings suggest the importance of revisiting the dominant narrative in pesantren culture to be more inclusive of social change and critical thinking.

Abstract

This study explores how Islamic values are integrated into local cultural practices through the bubur keselamatan tradition in Lerpak Bangkalan, Madura. It highlights how spiritual values, symbolism, and moral teachings are embedded in this tradition, reflecting the harmonious coexistence of Islam and indigenous Madurese culture. Data were collected using qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation, with a focus on elements such as communal prayers, the symbolic use of odd numbers, and the value of patience demonstrated during the cooking process. The findings reveal that the bubur keselamatan tradition serves as a medium for expressing gratitude to Allah while preserving local wisdom. It exemplifies how Islamic principles, such as obedience to God and patience, are seamlessly integrated into cultural practices, creating unique forms of religious expression. For instance, the use of odd numbers in this tradition symbolizes spiritual significance that transcends cultural boundaries, demonstrating how universal values are reflected in local customs. The study contributes to religious and cultural anthropology by demonstrating the dynamic interaction between religion and culture in rural Indonesian society. It underscores the importance of preserving local traditions as tools for maintaining cultural identity and fostering social cohesion. Additionally, it highlights the relevance of the bubur keselamatan tradition as a model for understanding how universal Islamic values can coexist with local customs, offering valuable lessons for addressing cultural preservation challenges amid globalization. These findings emphasize the need to safeguard local wisdom to ensure the continuity of cultural heritage and strengthen national character.

Abstract

This article examines the problematic social practices related to the appointment of Wali al-Nikāḥ (marriage guardians) in Kotagajah Subdistrict, Central Lampung Regency, Indonesia. The focus lies on conflicts surrounding the rejection of Wali al-Nasab (lineal guardians) by the bride's family, disputes among multiple guardians within the hierarchical structure, and unauthorized delegation of wali. This study explores the tension between the normative framework of Islamic law regarding Wali al-Nikāḥ and the lived realities of marriage practice at the community level. To address this issue, a qualitative fieldwork approach was employed using a socio-legal lens. Data were collected through interviews with penghulu (marriage registrars), religious leaders, and families who have experienced guardianship disputes, supported by administrative documents from the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) and references from classical fiqh texts and Indonesian marriage law. The findings reveal various forms of conflict in marriage proceedings, including the moral disqualification of biological fathers, internal family disputes over rightful guardianship, and administrative manipulations such as "declaring the guardian deceased" to secure the appointment of a Wali al-Ḥākim (judicial guardian). These phenomena indicate a disjunction between fiqh-based legal norms and social dynamics, often leading to compromise. This study highlights the need to critically reassess the wali hierarchy's structure in Islamic law and develop more responsive legal mechanisms that better reflect social realities.

Abstract

This article examines the concept of cosmopolitan da‘wah as a social response to the phenomenon of ṭarīqah gairu mu‘tabarah ‘ṣūfī orders’ in Indonesia through a qualitative library research approach. Data were collected systematically from official documents of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, fatwas of the Indonesian Ulama Council, academic works on sufism, and international journal articles, and were analyzed using content and thematic analysis. Employing Vertovec and Cohen’s theory of cosmopolitanism, the study argues that the existence of gairu mu‘tabarah orders cannot be reduced merely to questions of sanad legitimacy but should also be understood as expressions of spiritual plurality within contemporary muslim society. The findings demonstrate that the six dimensions of cosmopolitanism. Sociocultural conditions, worldview, transnational political projects, identity recognition, dispositional orientations, and practices, provide an analytical framework that positions cosmopolitan da‘wah as a means of accommodating ṣūfī diversity, strengthening social cohesion, and fostering an inclusive, moderate, and peaceful spiritual space.
