Abstract

Tuan Guru holds an important position in Lombok society as a spiritual and social leader. It is necessary to understand the balance between two roles that often cause tension: the religious-spiritual role as a religious teacher and the socio-political role as a community leader. Amidst dynamic social changes, Tuan Guru is required to maintain moral integrity while also being an agent of Islamic-based educational and social reform. This study aims to explain the balance between the spiritual-religious and socio-political roles of Tuan Guru. In this context, Tuan Guru is required to maintain moral integrity and religious knowledge while demonstrating adaptive social leadership. This will enable the re-emergence of Islamic leadership, such as that of the Prophet Muhammad which harmonizes religion and statehood. The approach used in this study is qualitative-descriptive. Data collection was carried out through observation at the Nurul Hakim Islamic Boarding School in Kediri, West Lombok, by interviewing various figures, namely the village head, community leaders, village elders, and teachers. This study employs Max Weber’s interactive analysis model, which encompasses data collection, reduction, presentation and drawing of conclusions, enriched by the theory of charismatic authority and the concept of transformational leadership developed by James MacGregor Burns and Bernard M. Bass. This framework is used to interpret Tuan Guru’s charisma as a source of moral legitimacy and to analyze the shift in his role from a religious authority to an actor in social, political, and educational reform. The findings indicate that Tuan Guru’s leadership has transformed from normative religious authority into multidimensional community leadership through strengthened moral legitimacy, social trust, and adaptive capacity in the face of social change. Consequently, Tuan Guru functions as a spiritual guide, moral exemplar, educational reformer, and socio-political mediator. This research makes a theoretical contribution to the study of religious leadership and, in practical terms, provides insights into value-based adaptive leadership for addressing contemporary social challenges.

Abstract

The Mantu Kucing, or ‘cat marriage,’ ritual in Curahjati Village, Banyuwangi, Indonesia, stands as a significant traditional practice that reflects the spiritual responses of agrarian communities to ecological uncertainty. Passed down through generations, this ritual was historically a means to invoke rain, yet it now confronts challenges posed by modernization, scientific rationality, and climate change. Although academic discourse surrounding traditional rain-making beliefs has expanded, systematic research on the social reproduction mechanisms that support their persistence remains limited. This study explores how the meanings and functions of Mantu Kucing are expressed in community life and how traditional beliefs are negotiated alongside modern meteorological knowledge. Employing Pierre Bourdieu's social practice theory, this qualitative ethnographic research analyzes the interactions among habitus, field, and symbolic capital. Conducted in Curahjati Village, the research involved interviews with ten informants, comprising traditional leaders, farmers, religious figures, and youth, as well as participant observation and documentation. The findings reveal that Mantu Kucing operates as a complex mechanism for social reproduction, where the ritual habitus engages with various overlapping fields: traditional rituals, Islamic practices, modern scientific knowledge, and the market economy. The ritual serves not only as a spiritual expression of cosmological beliefs but also as a means of fostering social solidarity through gotong royong (mutual cooperation). Additionally, it acts as a source of symbolic capital that enriches cultural identity and provides a venue for negotiating authority between traditional and modern knowledge systems. The tradition persists through strategic adaptation, maintaining its spiritual essence while embracing digital documentation and actively engaging younger generations by reinterpreting the ritual as local wisdom. This study underscores how agrarian communities exercise cultural agency within structural constraints, effectively preserving their collective identity through creative transformation and offering alternative rationalities for navigating ecological uncertainty.

Abstract

The Merariq Kodeq tradition is one of the cultural heritages of the Sasak people that contains profound philosophical, moral, and social values. However, in its development, it faces various dynamics due to the influence of modernization and social change. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between the subjective experiences of Merariq Kodeq practitioners through a phenomenological approach and the socio-cultural context of the Sasak people, which is studied ethnographically. This research uses qualitative methods with a phenomenological and ethnographic approach, conducted in Kuranji Village, Labuapi District, West Lombok Regency. Data collection methods included participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, with informants comprising traditional leaders, religious leaders, village officials, community leaders, and adolescents. The results of the study show that Merariq Kodeq is not only understood as a traditional marriage practice, but also as a symbol of the collective identity of the Sasak people, representing the values of honor, politeness, and social solidarity. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of preserving local cultural values through educational, participatory, and collaborative approaches in order to maintain a balance between the preservation of customs and the dynamics of social change in the modern era.

Abstract

The low level of education among the Kaili Da’a community impacts the vulnerability of family resilience, particularly in economic and social aspects, as reflected in the dominance of livelihoods in the informal sector, where 50.3% of Kaili Da’a livelihoods are in agriculture and gardening, while the remainder work as traders, miners, or vendors in markets. This study aims to analyze the strengthening of family resilience among the Kaili Da’a indigenous community from the perspective of Jamaluddin Athiyyah’s Maqāṣid al-Sharīʻah using qualitative methods as well as Miles and Huberman’s analysis. The results indicate that family resilience among the Kaili Da’a community encompasses five dimensions: legal and structural quality, physical resilience, economic resilience, socio-psychological resilience, and socio-cultural resilience. However, comprehensive fulfillment of indicators is only observed in the dimensions of legal and structural quality, physical resilience, and socio-cultural resilience, while the economic and socio-psychological dimensions remain suboptimal. From the perspective of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʻah, these findings indicate that the family resilience of the Kaili Da’a community reflects the dimensions of the individual, family, society, and humanity. This study contributes to the development of an analysis of family resilience based on Jamaluddin Athiyyah’s Maqāṣid al-Sharīʻah, which integrates the local values of the Kaili Da’a indigenous community with an Islamic perspective. This study also enriches the theoretical discourse on family resilience grounded in local culture and Maqāṣid al-Sharīʻah.

Abstract

Rias Village in the South Bangka Regency has been projected as the settlement of Javanese, Sundanese, and Bugis transmigrants alongside the indigenous Bangka community. The coexistence of these diverse ethnic groups has given rise to variations in social and cultural practices, as well as differences in agricultural management approaches. The role of civic virtue was examined in shaping community life within the transmigration area, with particular attention to traditional practices that contribute to harmonious environmental management. Qualitative-descriptive research was employed, where the data were collected through observation, purposive sampling interviews, and document analysis. Research findings from document studies were analyzed through several stages such as document familiarization, coding process, theme and pattern analysis, interpretation, and report preparation. The findings indicate that three key Islamic traditions like Sedekah Bumi, Maulid Nabi, and Ruwahan embody the principles of civic virtue. These traditions function as mechanisms for fostering unity and social cohesion, while simultaneously supporting collective values of civic disposition and civic commitment. Sedekah Bumi is related to civic disposition in hopes of getting better harvest in the following year. Maulid Nabi fosters civic commitment in building togetherness. The ruwahan tradition fosters civic commitment in building intimacy. The values positively influence the cooperative management of agricultural environments.
