Abstract

This study explores the concept of sign language in the Qur’an as a universal form of communication rooted in human nature. Unlike previous studies focusing on verbal ethics in Islamic communication, this research highlights nonverbal expressions silence, gestures, and visual signs as legitimate and sacred forms of al-bayān (articulation of meaning). Through a qualitative-descriptive library research approach, the study employs thematic Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr mauḍū‘ī), nonverbal communication theory as articulated by Ray L. Birdwhistell, and theological semiotics to analyze verses depicting prophetic gestures: prophet Zakariyya’s symbolic silence Surah Āli ʿImran verse 41; Surah Maryam verse 10, Maryam’s gesture toward prophet ‘Isa surah Maryam verse 26, prophet Musa’s radiant hand Surah Ṭaha verse 22, and the regulation of voice and conduct in communication Surah al-Ḥujurat verses 2–3. Findings reveal that nonverbal communication in the Qur’an functions not merely as an alternative to speech but as a divinely sanctioned medium of spiritual awareness and worship. Silence becomes a means of purification and surrender, gestures become extensions of divine will, and light serves as a visual symbol of divine truth. Theologically, this study affirms that al-bayān represents a holistic system of meaning (niẓām al-maʿnā), integrating verbal, paralinguistic, and nonverbal dimensions into a unified Qur’anic communication paradigm. The research contributes to Qur’anic communication studies by proposing a tauḥīdī framework in which silence, movement, and light operate as sacred languages of devotion and consciousness demonstrating that divine communication transcends speech and resonates within all dimensions of human expression.

Abstract

Understanding the life cycle is an important aspect of cultural studies, as it contains the values, norms, and collective identity of the community that are passed down from generation to generation. This research examines the human life cycle in the cultural perspective of the people of Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta through an ethnographic approach. The life cycle starts from birth, childhood and adolescence, adulthood and marriage, to old age and death. This cycle is understood as a series of rites that are full of symbolic, spiritual and social meanings. Various traditions such as mitoni, puputan, nyanggar, circumcision, and death slametan reflect the way people celebrate and interpret life culturally. The approach used in this research is qualitative with ethnographic methods. The data collection technique in this research is triangulated through three main methods that complement each other, namely participatory observation, semi-structured in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. This research found that tradition not only functions as a celebration of biological transition, but also as a mechanism for value inheritance, identity formation, and strengthening social solidarity. Despite the pressures of globalisation and modernisation, the people of Gunungkidul show efforts to preserve traditions through cultural adaptation and revitalisation, including in local education. By placing nature and community as cultural learning spaces, the cycle of life becomes a mirror of the dynamic interaction between humans, traditions and local values. This study confirms that ethnography shows that culture in the human life cycle in the Gunung Kidul region is the main instrument in shaping human character and maintaining the continuity of the community's collective identity.

Abstract

This article examines how the Penginyongan film represents Islamic cultural values within the socio-cultural context of the Banyumas Raya community, Indonesia. The urgency of this research lies in the lack of studies that position local audio-visual media as a space for the articulation of religious values and cultural identity amidst the penetration of digital modernity. Through a visual ethnography approach, this research not only utilizes field observations, interviews, and focus group discussions, but also conducts film text analysis to examine how social, cultural, and religious representations are constructed visually and narratively in four films: Pegatan (2023), SETAN: Seni Tani (2023), Dolanan Layangan (2020), and PUR (2024). The research findings show that Islamic cultural values are manifested through an egalitarian, simple visual style, a non-hierarchical communal production pattern, the use of the Ngapak language as a symbol of resistance and pride in local identity, and humor as a medium for polite social criticism. On the other hand, the Penginyongan film shows the dialectic between modernity and communality, especially amid changes in the lifestyles of the younger generation and the pressures of digital culture. This research contributes to strengthening the study of Indonesian local culture while broadening understanding in global cultural studies of how local communities negotiate religious values and cultural identity through short films. The cinema Penginyongan shows that cultural da'wah can be present through social ethics and everyday aesthetics, rather than through formal ritual symbols.

Abstract

The dominance of Mashriq-centric discourse in the historiography of al-munāsabah has obscured the epistemological contributions of the Andalusian tradition of exegesis. This study aims to reposition the role of Ibn ‘Aṭiyyah (d. 541 AH) as a conceptual pioneer of this discipline, long before the systematic formulations of al-Rāzī and al-Biqā’ī. Through a genealogical–historical approach combined with close textual analysis of the Muqaddimah of al-Muḥarrar al-Wajīz. This study shows that Ibn ‘Aṭiyyah had already articulated core principles of Qur’anic coherence—tartīb al-ma‘ānī (ordering of meaning), ittiṣāl al-kalām (continuity of discourse), and the rejection of fragmented interpretation—even though he did not yet use the later formal terminology of al-munāsabah. The application of these principles is demonstrated through his careful analysis of the narrative coherence in Surah Āl ‘Imrān verses 52-54, the structural-metaphorical relationship in Surah al-Nūr verses 35-37, and the global thematic continuity between the closing of Surah al-Mā’idah and the opening of Surah al-An’ām. These findings revise the dominant Mashriq-centric narrative by highlighting an Andalusian framework grounded in linguistic, structural, and practical integration as the basis for a more coherent and context-sensitive Qur’anic hermeneutics.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital interaction among university students has created new challenges for sustaining religious moderation values in online environments. This study examines the process of internalizing religious moderation values among students of the Institut Agama Islam Bakti Negara (IAIBN) Tegal and its implications for the manifestation of their social morality in cyberspace. Amid the government’s extensive efforts to strengthen religious moderation—particularly within Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKI)—the digital sphere has become a dominant arena of social interaction that presents unique psychological challenges. Employing a qualitative case-study approach, this research collected data through in-depth interviews, digital participatory observation (digital ethnography), and document analysis. The data were analyzed thematically by integrating the theoretical frameworks of value internalization and John Suler’s Online Disinhibition Effect. The findings reveal that the internalization of religious moderation values at IAIBN Tegal—implemented through initiatives such as the Rumah Moderasi and curriculum integration—has been largely successful at the cognitive level. However, the manifestation of these values in students’ social morality within cyberspace remains complex and ambivalent. Online disinhibition factors—such as dissociative anonymity, invisibility, and dissociative imagination—significantly shape students’ behavior, often creating discrepancies between the values they espouse and the actions they display online. These dynamics may lead to benign disinhibition (positive openness) that aligns with moderation values, or to toxic disinhibition (aggressiveness and intolerance) that contradicts them. This study concludes that value internalization is contextual rather than absolute; the situational forces of cyberspace can temporarily override internalized values. The findings underscore the urgency for developing a “Digital Moderation Literacy” curriculum within PTKI—one that goes beyond theological knowledge transfer and equips students with metacognitive skills to consciously recognize and manage the effects of online disinhibition.

Abstract

The accelerating advancement of digital technology and artificial intelligence in the Fourth Industrial Revolution demands Islamic Education (PAI) to develop students’ digital competence and critical engagement. Simultaneously, worsening environmental degradation highlights the urgent need for educational models that integrate Islamic theological values with eco-literacy to foster ethical and sustainable behavior. This study examines the effectiveness of integrating digital literacy and eco-literacy into the Islamic Education (PAI) curriculum to transform the values of tawḥīd into students’ environmental ethics in Madrasah Aliyah across Tegal Regency. The study is grounded in the context of global environmental crises and the dynamics of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which require Islamic education to produce a generation that is not only faithful but also environmentally responsible and digitally adaptive. The purpose of this research is to measure the effectiveness of the integration model in enhancing students’ understanding of tawḥīd, environmental attitudes, and environmentally ethical behavior, as well as to assess the role of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the learning process. A quasi-experimental method using a pretest–posttest control group design was employed with 240 students assigned to experimental and control groups. Instruments included a tawḥīd comprehension test, an environmental attitude scale, behavioral observations, and a digital literacy assessment. The findings reveal significant improvements in all three variables in the experimental group compared to the control group, with tawḥīd comprehension serving as a partial mediator between digital literacy and environmental behavior. AI-based tools enhanced student engagement and personalized learning, effectively supporting the internalization of Islamic values. These results reinforce the theoretical framework of integrating digital literacy and eco-literacy as an innovative educational approach in Islamic Education and highlight its potential as a pedagogical strategy responsive to technological advancements and contemporary environmental challenges.

Abstract

This article analyzes the tension between the Bejamu Saman tradition in Gayo Lues and Islamic legal norms due to the influx of modern cultural influences. The core problem lies in the practice of Najuk and the shift in artistic content that tends to emphasize sensual aspects, which harms the religious substance of tradition. The novelty of this study lies in the approach of the Sociology of Islamic Law combined with an evaluation based on Maqāṣid al-Sharī'ah to formulate a form of harmonization between local wisdom and the limitations of sharia. Using a qualitative method with a normative-juridical approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with religious leaders, traditional leaders, and community artists in Gayo Lues Regency. The research findings indicate that Bejamu Saman is maintained as a living law because of its essential role in maintaining social solidarity and silaturahmi (ḥifẓ al-Nafs). However, the evaluation of Maqāṣid al-Syarī'ah identified a clear mafsadah in the practice of Najuk and explicit poetry that directly threatens honor (ḥifẓ al-Nasl) and ignores the principle of Sadd al-Dharī'ah. As a strategic solution, this study recommends a Cultural Reform policy to the Customary Council and the Regional Government to develop technical guidelines for preserving traditions. These recommendations include legalizing the no-touch Najuk procedure through a special forum, returning artistic content to its original form through figurative and da'wah-filled treh/sonek poetry, adjusting Bines dance movements to be less excessive, and strengthening control of performance spaces through the Keketar authority. These steps are crucial to ensure the existence of Gayo Lues culture remains in harmony with the basic values of Islamic law without losing its original essence.

Abstract

Sekaten is a Javanese Islamic ritual that was originally designed as a medium of da‘wah, integrating Islamic teachings with local cultural expressions through music, symbols, and ceremonial spaces. While Sekaten is also celebrated in other Javanese courts such as Yogyakarta, the Surakarta version displays a distinctive spatial configuration in which the royal square is dominated by a large-scale commercial night market and its ritual sites are more sharply separated between sacred and profane functions. This study aims to explore the segmentation of space within the contemporary Sekaten ritual in Surakarta and to analyze the shift from its religious orientation toward a celebratory, commodified form. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through field observation, in-depth interviews, and literature study. The findings reveal a spatial triad in the current ritual configuration: the courtyard of the Great Mosque functions as a site for symbolic Islamic da‘wah, the mosque interior serves as a contemplative spiritual space, and the royal square (alun-alun) has evolved into a festive marketplace. This spatial segmentation reflects a broader shift in public perception—where once the ritual emphasized spiritual reflection, it is now increasingly viewed as entertainment and economic spectacle. The study concludes that reinvigorating the ritual’s spiritual dimensions is essential to preserving Sekaten’s identity as a cultural heritage of Javanese Islam amidst the forces of secularization and market commodification.

Abstract

This research is driven by the environmental challenges posed by the liquid waste generated by batik micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Semarang City. The primary objective of this study is to analyze the integration of Green Marketing (GM) strategies with the philosophy of Memayu Hayuning Bawana (MHB) within the context of Javanese Islamic culture, focusing specifically on batik MSMEs in Semarang City. This analysis is grounded in local Javanese wisdom that aligns with Islamic teachings, rather than relying on the Qur'an or Hadith. Employing a qualitative research methodology, this study adopts a single case study design analyzed through the Theory of Planned Behavior. A purposive sampling technique has been utilized to select informants from batik MSMEs who possess either residency in or familiarity with Javanese Islamic cultural practices. Data collection methods include observation, in-depth interviews, documentation, and focus group discussions. Through the application of this methodology, the study presents a model for integrating GM strategies with the MHB philosophy as practiced by batik MSMEs in Semarang City. This model is articulated through four principal findings: First, Eco-Philosophy Integration Model. This concept emphasizes the implementation of MHB philosophy within green marketing as a sustainable business model. Second, Active Patience Concept. This notion reinterprets the traditional understanding of "patience," transitioning it from a passive interpretation to one characterized by active strategic thinking. Third, Value-Driven Business Paradox. This phenomenon highlights how businesses driven by MHB moral values can achieve considerable social and ecological impacts, even in the presence of modest financial returns, thereby creating alternative success metrics. Fourth, Cultural-Modern Communication Gap. This finding identifies the discrepancies between the comprehension of MHB philosophy and the pragmatic mindset of contemporary consumers. The four primary findings, representing a model for the integration of GM strategies with the MHB philosophy in Javanese Islamic culture, are intended to provide valuable strategic contributions to batik MSMEs in Semarang City.

Abstract

The Malay-Islamic scholarly tradition once served as a crucial foundation for the development of knowledge in the Nusantara through the harmonious integration of revelation, reason, and lived experience. However, colonialism has constructed a hierarchy of knowledge that positions Western epistemology as the center of rationality, while reducing the Malay-Islamic intellectual heritage to non-scientific local knowledge. This article aims to dismantle the structures of coloniality of knowledge that continue to be reproduced through modern education systems in the Malay–Islamic world and to offer the Transformative Islam framework as a more emancipatory epistemic alternative. Employing an interpretive textual analysis grounded in decolonial theory and the Islamic philosophy of science, this study traces epistemic subordination in the history of education, revitalizes the Malay–Islamic intellectual genealogy, and formulates a postcolonial pedagogical praxis to build the scientific autonomy of Malay Muslims. The findings show that colonial epistemological models have produced a disconnection from manuscripts, language, and the core values of adab, tawḥīd, and ḥikmah within Malay-Islamic epistemology. These findings are translated into a postcolonial pedagogical praxis with direct implications for contemporary education, including curriculum redesign, integrative teaching approaches that bridge religious and scientific knowledge, and community-engaged research to strengthen scientific agency. The article argues that such educational transformation is essential for restoring epistemic sovereignty and revitalizing Malay Islam as a knowledge civilization in the modern era.
