Abstract

This study, situated within the field of Islamic economics and finance, addresses the vulnerability of emerging capital markets to global economic crises and speculative behaviors. Understanding the institutional role of religious bodies in macroeconomic stability is crucial, given the unique resilience demonstrated by Islamic equities. This research aims to analyze the role and contribution of the National Sharia Board of the Indonesian Council of Ulema ‘Dewan Syariah Nasional Majelis Ulama Indonesia’ (DSN-MUI) in the formation and stabilization of the Indonesian Islamic stock market from 1999 to 2020. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with literature and content analysis, this study examines DSN-MUI fatwas, financial regulations, and historical market dynamics. The underlying premise is that DSN-MUI fatwas transcend normative religious compliance, functioning as proactive macroeconomic risk mitigation tools. The findings reveal that DSN-MUI’s strict screening criteria and prohibition of speculative transactions—such as short selling and margin trading—successfully insulated the Islamic capital market from global systemic shocks, including the 2008 financial crisis and the early 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, creating a distinct decoupling effect. This research contributes to behavioral finance and Islamic economic literature by redefining economic fatwas from rigid theological dogmas into adaptive socio-economic protection instruments that promote real business partnerships over short-term capital gains. In conclusion, the strategic synergy between DSN-MUI fatwas and state financial regulations is paramount in establishing the Indonesian Islamic stock market as a resilient safe haven, providing a sustainable and ethical investment framework amidst persistent global economic uncertainty.

Abstract

This study discovers sustainable tourism by focusing on how digitalization is revolutionizing community-based ecotourism in rural Indonesia, particularly in Pela Tourism Village, East Kalimantan. It investigates how digital tools supercharge promotional strategies and bring local wisdom, like Mahakam dolphin conservation and traditional practices, to a global audience. This research fills critical gaps in localized ecotourism studies, where digital transformation often overlooks ties to environmental sustainability and community empowerment, while bolstering weak areas in tourism competitiveness such as ICT readiness and green practices. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with an intrinsic case study design. Researchers collected data via observations, interviews, and document reviews. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, covering data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. This research confirms that digital ecotourism in Pela thrives on five key pillars: knowledge, internetworking, convergence, communication, and innovation. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and QR codes dramatically expand reach, foster interactive engagement, preserve heritage, and craft a strong village identity, enhancing competitiveness despite hurdles like patchy internet. This research offers tourism scholars a village-level framework blending digitalization, ecotourism, and local wisdom, proving digital strategies are vital for sustainable development by safeguarding the environment, culture, and community well-being in the digital tourism era.

Abstract

In Javanese society, slametan has long functioned not only as a religious ritual but also as a cultural mechanism for maintaining social harmony, solidarity, and collective identity. This study analyzes the meaning and function of slametan as a form of social piety within the Galih Warangka Jati Association. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the research gathered data through in-depth interviews and observations. The analysis was conducted using the perspectives of social piety and Javanese ethics to examine the interrelationship between religion and culture in the lives of penderes ‘sap tappers’. The results show that the penderes ‘sap tappers’ perform various types of slametan, including 1 Sura, takiran, wetonan, telasan, mulud, life-cycle rituals (birth and death), and celebrations (hajatan). The diversity of these rituals indicates that slametan accompanies various important personal and communal phases of life. Furthermore, the tradition reflects social piety through solidarity and togetherness. These values align with Javanese ethics, which emphasize the principles of harmony ‘guyub rukun’ and respect ‘hormat’ to maintain social balance. This study contributes to the field of religion and local culture by showing that social piety within the Galih Warangka Jati Association is shaped by both religious teachings and long-standing cultural ethics. The solidarity among members of the Galih Warangka Jati Association proves that social harmony in Javanese society is achieved through interactions born from religious devotion and inclusive cultural preservation.

Abstract

This article is situated within the field of environmental sociology and adopts an interdisciplinary approach that integrates religious, cultural, and water resource conservation dimensions. The aim of this study is to analyze the rainwater harvesting movement as a social practice that is not only technically and ecologically oriented but also shaped by the construction of myths and religious values within society. The significance of this topic lies in the understanding that the increasingly complex water crisis cannot be viewed solely as an environmental issue; it must also be recognized as a social phenomenon intertwined with value systems, power dynamics, and the daily practices of communities. This study employs qualitative methods, specifically a case study approach that includes field observations conducted in the Banyu Bening Community of Tempursari Hamlet, Sardonoharjo, located in the Ngaglik Subdistrict of Sleman Regency in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The research also features in-depth interviews and narrative analyses of community practices and interpretations related to rainwater. The findings reveal that the rainwater harvesting movement has emerged from a tension between environmental conservation rationality, mythological beliefs, and the legitimization of religious values. While this practice serves as an adaptive strategy to confront the water crisis, its effectiveness is heavily influenced by how well religious values are internalized as ecological ethics that inspire collective action. This research contributes to strengthening the hydrosocial perspective within environmental sociology by identifying religion as a crucial factor in conservation practices. The findings emphasize the necessity of integrating local knowledge, religious values, and environmental policies to achieve sustainability. Consequently, this research provides an essential foundation for developing contextually relevant and sustainable conservation strategies that are deeply rooted in culture and religion.

Abstract

The Peresean tradition is a distinctive cultural heritage of the Sasak people, combining elements of traditional martial arts, local wisdom, sportsmanship and character education into a single cultural practice passed down from generation to generation. It is important to study this tradition, given that its survival faces various challenges due to modernisation and a decline in the younger generation’s interest in local culture. In addition to serving as a cultural performance, Peresean also acts as a medium for passing on the values of courage, self-control, respect, solidarity, and social responsibility through the direct involvement of the community. This study is to examine the Peresean tradition of the indigenous Sasak community as a means of internalizing character values through an ethnopedagogical perspective, as well as to explore its contribution to strengthening social bonds within the Sasak community. This study uses qualitative methods. Data collection was conducted through observation and in-depth interviews with pepadu, pekembar, traditional leaders, academics, and the community, as well as field documentation in Bonjeruk Village, Central Lombok Regency. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's method with the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. This study draws on Berger and Luckmnn’s Social Construction Theory, which explains that cultural values are formed and internalized through the process of social interaction. The results of the study show that the Peresean tradition not only functions as a cultural performance but also as a medium of education based on local culture that instills social and moral values through role modeling, habituation, and community involvement. Peresean plays an important role in strengthening social solidarity and the collective identity of the Sasak community. This study makes a theoretical contribution by broadening our understanding of the role of local cultural traditions as a means of internalizing character values in community life. In practical terms, the findings of this study can be used as a basis for developing education grounded in local wisdom to strengthen students’ character and support sustainable efforts to preserve local culture.

Abstract

Islamization in Java developed through the interaction between Islamic teachings, Sufism, and local culture. Studies on Kiai Mutamakkin in the Serat Cebolek have mainly seen him as a political figure, an ideal of Javanese Islam, or a symbol of moderation. However, little attention is paid to how Sufi cultural practices shape the santri habitus and produce religious authority. This article examines how the santri’s habitus forms and authority emerges through Kiai Mutamakkin’s symbolic strategies in the Serat Cebolek. The primary source is the Serat Cebolek version by Van Dorp, transliterated by Soebardi. This literature review uses documentation and analyzes data with Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of praxis, focusing on habitus, capital, field, and symbolic strategy. Findings show the santri’s habitus forms through cultural Sufi practices using Javanese symbols, such as the Dewa Ruci narrative and religious pedagogy. These practices help internalize religious values in a reflective, context-aware way. The study also finds that Kiai Mutamakkin uses cultural, social, and symbolic capital, converting them into religious legitimacy recognized by his community and followers. Using symbolic strategies, he links Sufism with local culture, building alternative religious authority outside formal Keraton structures. This article supports studies on Nusantara Islam and Islamic anthropology by showing that cultural Sufism shapes the santri habitus, creates legitimacy, and forms community-based authority.

Abstract

This article examines the epistemological structure of Pesantren reasoning within the tradition of Islam Nusantara through the dialectical relationship between turāṡ (classical Islamic texts) and ʻurf (local traditions). The study is based on the argument that Pesantren cannot merely be understood as institutions preserving classical Islamic scholarship, but also as dynamic spaces of negotiation between textual authority, socio-cultural realities, and contemporary transformations. The importance of this study lies in the growing challenges faced by Pesantren in responding to modernity, including issues related to industry, economics, science, environment, gender, health, digital technology, and artificial intelligence. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research methods with descriptive-analytical, historical, and philosophical approaches. The study analyzes classical Islamic texts and contemporary scholarly works related to pesantren, Islamic epistemology, and Islam Nusantara through the framework of Muḥammad Ābid al-Jābirī’s epistemology, particularly the concepts of bayānī, burhānī, ‘irfānī, and tajrībī reasoning. The findings demonstrate that pesantren reasoning is not a singular textual system, but a multi-epistemological construct formed through the interaction between textual authority, collective ijtihād, spiritual tradition, and social praxis. Pesantren possess significant strengths in contextualizing turāṡ within social realities, yet also face epistemological limitations due to the dominance of textual reasoning and the limited integration between religious and scientific knowledge. This article contributes to Islamic, social, and cultural studies by positioning pesantren as dynamic epistemological institutions capable of negotiating between tradition and modernity in contemporary Muslim society.

Abstract

The Al-Jabbar Grand Mosque in Bandung, West Java, stands as one of Indonesia’s largest religious infrastructure projects and has quickly become a prominent symbol of Islamic modernity, regional identity, and religious tourism. Although its significance continues to grow, existing studies on Al-Jabbar primarily address architecture, symbolism, and tourism, with limited attention to its broader social, political, and economic impacts as a religious megaproject. This research examines the ways in which the Al-Jabbar Mosque reshapes power relations, spatial structures, and socio-economic dynamics in the Gedebage area, utilizing Bent Flyvbjerg’s megaprojects framework, including the Iron Law of Megaprojects, strategic misrepresentation, and the four sublimes. Employing a qualitative case study approach based on field observations, in-depth interviews, and literature analysis, the study finds that the Al-Jabbar Mosque serves not only as a place of worship but also as a political-urban instrument reflecting state interests, modernization agendas, and narratives of technological progress. The results indicate that the project has converted former wetlands and agricultural land into a religious-tourism hub, restructured mobility patterns, stimulated new economic activities, strengthened micro and small enterprises, and accelerated the commodification of public space. However, the distribution of benefits remains uneven. Government institutions, developers, and tourism-related actors obtain significant economic and symbolic advantages, while local residents experience increasing pressures, such as traffic congestion, waste accumulation, land-use conversion, business competition, and emerging forms of religious gentrification. These findings suggest that religious megaprojects can generate both economic opportunities and new forms of urban inequality. The study contributes to the sociology of megaprojects by introducing the concept of mega religious infrastructure as an analytical framework for understanding how large-scale religious developments intersect with power relations, urban capitalism, and socio-spatial transformation in contemporary Muslim societies.
