JPPT was first published in January 2000. JPPT published a print version in 2007, then started the online version or Open Journal System (OJS) in 2014. Early online versions of JPPT or OJS editing have not yet been fully implemented online management and are beginning to make improvements Web Journal view and journal cover and OJS governance management on Volume 2 No. 2 of 2017. JPPT has been indexed on Google Scholar and Garuda IPI by 2015, and by 2017 it has indexed SINTA and registered DOAJ and Crossref in the same year. We accept submissions from all over Indonesia. All submitted articles will not be published elsewhere, original and not considered for other publications.

Abstract

The use of AB mix as a nutrient in soilless rice cultivation actually prolongs the vegetative phase which results in late flowering and suboptimal grain filling. This study aims to examine the effect of ABC Mix (AB Mix + silica) and gibberellin nutrients on flowering age, growth, and yield of red rice in a soilless cultivation system. This experiment was designed using a split plot design, where ABC mix nutrients were the main plot while gibberellins were the subplots and replicated three times. The concentration of ABC Mix nutrients consisted of 4 levels, namely 750-800 ppm, 1000-1050 ppm, 1250-1300 ppm, and 1500-1550 ppm, while the concentration of gibberellins consisted of 2 levels, namely 0 ppm (control) and 200 ppm. The results showed that there was a significant interaction between the ABC Mix 750-800 ppm and GA3 200 ppm treatments on plant height (192.0 cm). The single treatment of GA3 200 ppm showed a significant effect on plant height (192.0 cm), while the ABC Mix treatment of 750-800 ppm showed a significant effect on the total number of tillers (60.03 stems), the number of productive tillers (23.03 stems), panicle length (55.42 cm), and plant height (192.0 cm). However, the addition of silica to the AB Mix (ABC Mix) and the applied GA3 was not able to accelerate the flowering phase, where the flowering time was still above 80 days after planting. This was suspected to be due to the inappropriate timing of GA3 application, while the activation of the flower meristem gene takes about 5 days after GA3 application. The inaccuracy in the timing of GA3 application actually resulted in the growth of gigas plants (twice as much as normal plants) and a low number of productive tillers (±38% of the total number of tillers).

Abstract

Sargassum is recognized as a valuable source of bioactive secondary metabolites; however, quantitative comparisons of solvent-dependent extraction efficiencies remain limited. The present study rigorously assesses the extraction performance of methanol and hexane for phenolics, tannins, and major phytochemical constituents. Samples were subjected to seven-day maceration followed by phytochemical screening, determination of total phenolics using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, and quantification of total tannins with a tannic acid standard. Methanol exhibited a markedly higher extraction yield (4.23%) compared with hexane (1.13%). Furthermore, methanol extracts contained substantially greater levels of phenolics (16.13 mg GAE/g) and tannins (36.86 mg TAE/g) than those obtained with hexane, which yielded only 0.26 mg GAE/g and 0.42 mg TAE/g, respectively. The resulting phytochemical profiles highlight a clear polarity-driven selectivity, wherein methanol preferentially extracts polar metabolites, while hexane favors non-polar constituents. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that methanol is the superior solvent for obtaining Sargassum extracts enriched with bioactive compounds.

Abstract

Photosynthetic bacteria are used as autotrophic bacteria capable of carrying out photosynthesis independently. They also serve as atmospheric nitrogen-fixing microorganisms that contribute to the nitrogen supply for plants and enable more efficient utilization of inorganic nitrogen fertilizers, thereby enhancing nutrient uptake by plants. The effectiveness of photosynthetic bacteria is also influenced by their concentration. An appropriate concentration of photosynthetic bacteria affects plant growth and yield. The objective of this study was to determine the optimal concentration of photosynthetic bacteria to improve nutrient availability and uptake in order to increase the seed yield of Inerie kidney bean variety grown in lowland areas. The study was designed using a Randomized Block Design with treatments consisting of different concentrations of photosynthetic bacteria (K), namely K1 (10 mL L⁻¹), K2 (15 mL L⁻¹), K3 (20 mL L⁻¹), K4 (25 mL L⁻¹), K5 (30 mL L⁻¹), and K6 (35 mL L⁻¹). The results showed that the concentration of 15 mL L⁻¹ was the most effective, producing 125.19 seeds per plant, a seed weight of 40.89 g per plant, and a total seed weight of 642.54 g per 3 m² plot. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different types of organic manure on the growth and survival of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) seedlings cultivated in Vertisol media. The treatments consisted of cattle, goat, and chicken manure, along with a non-fertilized control. Vegetative growth parameters observed included plant height, leaf number, and leaf area, while seedling survival was analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method and log-rank test. The results showed that manure type significantly affected all vegetative growth parameters. Cattle manure produced the highest vegetative growth performance, followed by the control and goat manure treatments, whereas chicken manure resulted in the lowest growth response. The highest survival rate was observed in the cattle manure treatment (100%), followed by the control (93.75%) and goat manure (87.50%), while chicken manure showed the lowest survival rate (18.75%). Kaplan–Meier curves revealed that the chicken manure treatment experienced the most rapid decline in survival probability from the early observation period. The log-rank test demonstrated that differences among survival curves were statistically significant (log-rank χ² = 41.98; df = 3; p < 0.001), indicating that organic manure type significantly influenced seedling survival during the early nursery stage. Overall, the findings demonstrate that under Vertisol conditions, cattle manure provided the best combination of vegetative growth and survival stability of watermelon seedlings compared with the other treatments.

Abstract

Parasitoid insects play a crucial role in the wetland rice ecosystem as natural enemies of key pests. This study aimed to assess the population dynamics and community structure of parasitoid insects across four rice growth phases in Gampong Gintong, Grong-Grong District, Pidie Regency. Sampling was conducted at 25 observation units (5 transects × 5 points) using yellow sticky traps, sweep nets, and aspirators at 14, 28, 49, and 70 Days After Transplanting (DAT) with three replications. A total of 28 individuals from six parasitoid families of two orders were recorded: Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, Chalcididae, and Eulophidae (Hymenoptera), and Pipunculidae and Tachinidae (Diptera). Population density was highest at the Late Vegetative phase (28 DAT) at 3.00 individuals/plot and lowest at the Grain-Filling phase (70 DAT) at 1.67 individuals/plot. One-way ANOVA showed no significant overall difference among phases (F = 3.556; p = 0.067), although Tukey HSD identified a significant difference between the Late Vegetative and Grain-Filling phases. Shannon-Wiener index (H’) ranged from 0.673 to 1.277, Pielou’s evenness (E) from 0.870 to 0.971, and Simpson’s dominance (C) from 0.190 to 0.400. Air temperature increased from 27.9°C at the Late Vegetative phase to 30.1°C at Grain-Filling, showing a strong negative correlation with parasitoid abundance (r = −0.98; p = 0.021), while relative humidity showed a strong positive correlation (r = +0.96; p = 0.038). Braconidae (42.86%) and Ichneumonidae (39.29%) were present across all growth phases and showed potential as biological control agents in integrated pest management programs in Pidie Regency.

Abstract

This study aimed to compare the growth responses of two local Madurese maize varieties, Talangu and Elos, grown in media contaminated with polypropylene (PP) microplastics, and to identify the variety that showed better adaptive capacity during the early growth stage. The experiment was conducted using a 2 × 2 factorial completely randomized design with three replications. The tested factors consisted of maize variety, namely Talangu and Elos, and growth media condition, namely without PP contamination and with PP contamination. Observations were carried out at 5, 10, and 15 days after sowing on plant height, number of leaves, root length, and plant fresh weight. The results showed that polypropylene microplastic contamination affected the growth responses of both varieties, although the magnitude of the effect varied depending on the observed parameter. In general, the Talangu variety exhibited better growth performance in plant height, root length, shoot fresh weight, and root fresh weight, whereas the Elos variety was relatively better at maintaining leaf number under contaminated conditions. These findings indicate that plant responses to polypropylene contamination are parameter-specific and influenced by varietal differences. Based on the overall early growth responses, the Talangu variety can be considered more tolerant to polypropylene microplastic contamination than the Elos variety.

Abstract

Mung bean is a legume high in plant protein. Malaka mung beans have about 15% protein and up to 60% antioxidants. However, their productivity is lower than that of superior varieties. This study analyzed how different NPK doses and biofertilizer types affect the growth and yield of local Malaka mung beans, and identified the best combination. This experiment used a factorial Randomized Block Design with two factors: NPK dose (100 kg ha⁻¹ (N1) and 50 kg ha⁻¹ (N2) and biofertilizer type (no biofertilizer (P0) Bioboost (P1) Bion Up (P2), and Extragen (P3). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Soil samples were compositely analyzed to assess changes in pH, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and base saturation before and after the study. The results showed an interaction between treatments on stem diameter and seed yield per plot. The largest stem diameter and seed yield were obtained with 50 kg ha⁻¹ NPK + Extragen biofertilizer. The highest seed yield per plot was 153.78 g, equivalent to 1.28 t ha⁻¹. This yield was 40% higher than farmers’ yields, but reached only 64% of the yield of nationally superior mung bean varieties. These findings provide a vital foundation for developing a cultivation technology package for local mung beans in the drylands of East Nusa Tenggara. By advancing environmentally friendly agricultural inputs and strengthening food security rooted in local commodities, this work will make a significant contribution to sustainable development in the region.

Abstract

Fruit flies (Bactrocera spp.) are among the major agricultural pests attacking chili pepper fruit. The fruit fly species reported to attack chili pepper plants in Indonesia is Bactrocera dorsalis. One method of controlling fruit flies in chili pepper fields is the male annihilation technique (MAT), such as the use of methyl eugenol. Methyl eugenol, a male fruit fly attractant, enriched with fruit aroma in fruit fly traps, was expected to increase fruit fly abundance. This study aimed to determine the abundance of chili pepper fruit fly pests under various combinations of methyl eugenol and fruit aroma. The research was conducted in chili pepper fields in Bangka Regency using a randomized block design with eight replications. The study consisted of six formulations: Methyl Eugenol without fruit aroma (F0); Methyl Eugenol + Chili Aroma (F1); Methyl Eugenol + Starfruit Aroma (F2); Methyl Eugenol + Orange Aroma (F3); Methyl Eugenol + Guava Aroma (F4); and Methyl Eugenol + Mango Aroma (F5). The fruit fly trap model used was the Lynfield trap, and each formulation was mixed with an insecticide containing deltamethrin as the active ingredient. The results identified four fruit fly species: Bactrocera albistrigata, B. carambolae, B. dorsalis, and B. umbrosa, as well as one non-fruit fly species, Ankylopterix cf. anomala. Attractant formulation had no significant effect on fruit fly abundance in chili pepper plants, namely the abundance of B. dorsalis (p = 0.192), B. carambolae (p = 0.203), and the combined abundance of B. dorsalis + B. carambolae (p = 0.259). The methyl eugenol formulation without fruit aroma showed the highest fruit fly abundance compared to the methyl eugenol formulations enriched with fruit aroma, although the difference was not statistically significant. Although not statistically significant, the addition of fruit aroma to methyl eugenol reduced the abundance of B. dorsalis by 32.58–61.80% and reduced the abundance of B. carambolae by 36.71–60.76%. The methyl eugenol formulation without fruit aroma (F0) attracted more male fruit flies than the methyl eugenol formulations enriched with fruit aroma (F1–F5).
