Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of the Scrambled Text Technique on students’ ability to identify the generic structure of recount text. The research was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Siantar, with the students of Class X TJKT 3 as the research sample. This study used a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design. Although suitable for measuring changes after treatment, it is limited by internal validity threats and lacks a control group. Short instructional periods and consistent materials were applied to reduce these threats, with future research recommended to use a control group.   The instrument used in this research was a test in the form of recount text tasks that required students to identify the generic structure of the text. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test, and the results were analyzed by comparing students’ scores before and after the treatment, The findings revealed that the students’ mean score increased from 48.40 in the pre-test to 69.00 in the post-test, with a mean gain score of 21.00 after the implementation of the Scrambled Text Technique. The gain score analysis also revealed that all students experienced improvement, with no decrease in scores. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the Scrambled Text Technique has a positive effect on students’ understanding of the generic structure of recount text. These findings provide empirical support for the use of the Scrambled Text Technique as an effective instructional approach in enhancing students’ mastery of recount text generic structure in vocational high school contexts.

Abstract

This study explores the role of connotation in literary analysis through a semantic approach, focusing on how implicit meanings and emotional nuances in literary language enrich textual interpretation. Conducted as a library-based research, this study draws upon various literary texts and theoretical sources to investigate how connotation functions as a key element in understanding the aesthetic, ideological, and cultural dimensions of literary works. By analyzing a range of texts across different genres and historical periods, the research demonstrates that connotation not only enhances literal meaning but also reveals deeper interpretive layers. Through a semantic lens, it emphasizes the importance of sensitivity to word choice, cultural associations, and historical context in critically reading literature. The findings affirm that awareness of connotation is a vital tool for uncovering the complexity of literary meaning and broadening readers’ interpretive perspectives. Moreover, the study highlights the potential of semantic analysis to bridge linguistic and literary disciplines, fostering a more nuanced and interdisciplinary approach. Ultimately, it encourages deeper engagement with literature that transcends surface-level reading and embraces language’s rich capacity for meaning.

Abstract

This community-based outreach program was conducted to improve Grade XI students’ awareness, skills, and motivation in preparing for the TOEFL Listening section at SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar. As English language proficiency becomes an increasingly essential requirement for global education and career advancement, early exposure to international standardized tests such as TOEFL is critical. The program introduced students to the structure and function of the TOEFL, including its different types (iBT, ITP, and Prediction) and the specific challenges of the Listening section. Students were trained to use effective strategies such as focusing on the final line in dialogues, identifying synonymous phrases in questions and answers, and avoiding traps based on similar sounds. The implementation included interactive presentations, real-time simulations using Google Forms, and guided listening activities with authentic audio. Students participated actively and demonstrated improved engagement, comprehension, and test readiness. The feedback phase indicated that students gained a clearer understanding of TOEFL Listening tasks and increased confidence in approaching listening-based questions. The combination of strategy-based instruction, digital simulations, and supportive discussion helped students overcome initial anxiety and performance gaps. As a result, this outreach initiative successfully equipped students with practical listening tools, increased their motivation to practice independently, and laid the foundation for future TOEFL preparation. It is recommended that similar programs be extended to other schools to support students’ readiness for international English proficiency testing.
