Abstract

Purpose − The Merdeka Curriculum provides greater flexibility for schools to design, implement, and evaluate learning programs according to their contextual needs. However, its successful implementation requires effective school management practices. This study aims to explore how school management functions are implemented in the process of adopting the Merdeka Curriculum in secondary schools in Mataram City, Indonesia. Method − The study employed a qualitative case study approach involving six secondary schools consisting of three senior high schools and three junior high schools. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews with principals, teachers, and school staff, as well as document analysis. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Findings − The findings reveal that school management in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum is carried out through four key stages: planning, organizing, implementation, and monitoring. In the planning stage, schools conduct curriculum planning meetings, diagnostic assessments, and teacher training programs. The organizing stage involves the establishment of curriculum development teams and teacher performance assessment teams. During implementation, teachers apply teaching modules aligned with the Merdeka Curriculum while schools conduct workshops and professional development activities to strengthen teachers’ competencies. Monitoring and evaluation are conducted through summative assessments, the National Assessment (ANBK), and the use of educational report data. These findings highlight the crucial role of school leadership and collaborative management in ensuring the effective implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. The study contributes to the understanding of school-level management practices that can support curriculum reform in the Indonesian education system.

Abstract

This experimental study aims to analyze the influence of school principal leadership and learning climate on the competitiveness of non-formal education (NFE) institutions offering equivalency programs in Mataram City. The study employs a quantitative approach with an experimental design. Data were collected through a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, with respondents consisting of 56 teachers and educational staff as well as 56 students from 8 NFE units (1 SKB and 7 PKBM) in Mataram City. Data analysis used multiple linear regression. The results showed that, simultaneously, school principal leadership and learning climate significantly influenced the competitiveness of NFE institutions with a calculated F-value of 20.744 and a significance level of 0.000 (p < 0.01), contributing 43.9%. Partially, school principal leadership has a positive and significant effect on competitiveness (β = 0.668; p = 0.000), while the learning climate does not have a significant effect (β = -0.028; p = 0.793). The findings of this study reveal that in the context of non-formal education units in Mataram City, school principal leadership is the primary driver of competitiveness, while a learning climate that is already good and relatively homogeneous does not directly serve as a significant differentiator.

Abstract

This study aims to examine madrasah policies for improving the quality of education implemented through flagship programs to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education. This is a qualitative study using a multiple-case study approach conducted at two research sites in East Lombok Regency. The subjects of this study include madrasah principals, vice principals, committees, advisors, and students. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis utilized the Miles and Huberman model, comprising data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the flagship program policies at both madrasahs are based on an analysis of the needs and characteristics of the madrasahs using different approaches. MAN IC Lombok Timur tends to adopt a top-down approach focused on academic excellence, while MAN 1 Lombok Timur employs a bottom-up approach by offering extracurricular activities capable of accommodating all potential interests and talents. The implementation of flagship programs at both madrasahs contributes to quality improvement, competency development, and graduate competitiveness in line with SDG 4 indicators. The impact of flagship program policies extends beyond student achievement to include educational quality, attractiveness, and the madrasah’s reputation within the community.

Abstract

This study explores the role of religious leadership in mobilizing community participation within the context of Islamic boarding schools ‘pondok pesantren’ in East Lombok, Indonesia. The focus is on understanding how the charisma and religious authority of tuan guru influence community engagement in the development and sustainability of these educational institutions. The significance of this research lies in addressing a gap in the literature regarding the interplay between religiosity and social participation in Islamic educational settings. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis involving key stakeholders, including tuan guru, pesantren administrators, students, and local community members. This study is analyzed using Resource Mobilization Theory, which emphasizes both societal support and constraint of social movement phenomena. Findings show that tuan guru’s approach to leadership—grounded in Islamic values and humility—enabled him to navigate societal resistance, inspiring both material contributions such as land and building materials and non-material contributions such as voluntary labor and moral support. Furthermore, the deeply rooted tradition of gotong royong ‘mutual cooperation’ amplified collective efforts, sustaining the pesantren’s progress. This research contributes to the discourse on religious leadership by highlighting how charismatic and inclusive leadership can transform community dynamics and mobilize collective resources. These findings underscore the importance of integrating cultural and religious values in leadership practices for community development.
