Abstract

This study looked at the teratogenous effects of ethanol extracts of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. on the white mice fetus. Experimental animals consisted of 24 mices, 4 male mices and 20 female mices, divided into 4 groups, namely the negative control group, ethanol extracts of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr. 150 mg/kg BW; 300 mg/kg BW; and 600 mg/kg BW. Provision is made from the 6th day until the 15th day of pregnancy. Laparactomy is carried out on the 18th day of pregnancy. The parameters observed were body weight of mices, number of fetuses, average fetal weight, and macroscopic observation of the fetus. The results showed that the parent's body weight, number of fetuses, and average fetal weight were significantly different (sig <0.05). Macroscopic observation of the fetus obtained slow growth in ethanolic extracts dose of 600 mg/kgBW. This study can be concluded that the ethanol extract of Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr.has a teratogenic effect on the fetus of white mice.

Abstract

Calcium is an important micronutrient that helps prevent stunting. It plays a crucial role in bone growth. Maman (Cleome gynandra L.) is a local plant that grows in the Riau province and is used by local people as a fermented food. To utilize this local plant, it is necessary to analyze its nutrients, including calcium levels. Calcium analysis was carried out using a quantitative descriptive method with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Validation of the atomic absorption spectrophotometry method yielded a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9997, with calcium levels in maman leaves and fermented maman being 3132.33 mg/g and 1976.31 mg/g, respectively.

Abstract

Chia (Salvia hispanica L.) seeds contain phenolic compounds such as flavonols and phenolic acids (myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol, caffeic acid) that act as primary and synergistic antioxidants. These antioxidants reduce cholesterol by inhibiting absorption in the intestine and enhancing bile acid formation, facilitating cholesterol excretion through feces. Additionally, the high protein and fiber content in S. hispanica L. seeds reduces appetite and promotes prolonged satiety. This study evaluates the effect of different administration patterns of S. hispanica L. seeds on cholesterol reduction in common quail (Coturnix coturnix). The research involved five groups: three treatment groups receiving S. hispanica L. seeds at varying frequencies (once, twice, three times daily) and two controls (positive, negative), with six C. coturnix in each group. The S. hispanica L. seed dose was 1.8 mg per 200 g body weight (BW) administered for 30 days. Cholesterol levels were measured at baseline and after treatment and analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Duncan’s Post Hoc Test. Results indicated that administering S. hispanica L. seeds three times daily significantly reduced cholesterol levels (p < 0.05) compared to other frequencies. This research provides a foundation for further exploration into practical applications of S. hispanica L. seeds in cholesterol management, both in animals and potentially in humans.

Abstract

The prevalence of stunting toddlers increased in 2017 from 27.5% to 29.6%. Stunting occurs from the pre-conception mother who is malnourished and anemic and becomes severe during pregnancy with insufficient nutritional intake. Chia seeds as a food ingredient were safe because it has no side effects or allergenicity. Thus, chia seeds and their derivative products are a promising source for development. Chia seeds contain 17.83% omega-three fatty acids (-linolenic acid), sources of dietary fiber, a protein with high biological value, and antioxidants. In addition to containing essential fatty acids, chia seeds contain phenolic compounds. These phenolic compounds are bioactive components that contribute to the health benefits of chia seeds. However, this time, many studies on the chemical content of Chia seeds made us interested to see a different effects of Chia seeds, such a have a significant effect on fetal growth. This information is not widely known by the public yet. So the solution offered is to educate the people of Tuah Negeri Village, Tenayan Raya Pekanbaru District utilize these chia seeds as additional nutrition for pregnant women. Abstract

Abstract

The Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that has long-term impacts on children's growth and development, as well as the quality of human resources. One of the main strategies in the effort to prevent stunting is to provide education to vulnerable groups, especially pregnant women. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of pregnant women in RW 13 Pebatuan Village, Pekanbaru City, about stunting prevention through balanced nutrition education and early understanding of stunting. The methods of implementation include counseling, interactive discussions, and the distribution of educational media. This activity was carried out as part of the work program of the Community Service Practice of students from Poltekkes Kemenkes Riau. The results of the activity show an increase in pregnant women's understanding of the importance of nutritional intake during pregnancy and steps to prevent stunting. This activity is expected to become a sustainable promotive-preventive effort in supporting the acceleration of reducing stunting rates in the region.
