Abstract

Informal economic activities significantly influence the spatial and functional transformation of urban street corridors; however, their quantitative impact has not been examined in depth. This study analyzes the restructuring of street space by informal activities by integrating spatial pattern analysis (linear, spot, and mixed) with two quantitative indicators: the Informal Economic Activity Intensity Index (IIAEI) and the Spatial Occupation Ratio (SOR). Empirical data from three urban corridors in Medan City demonstrate that street space transformation occurs systematically through the interaction between activity intensity and spatial distribution. The findings indicate a non-linear relationship between activity intensity and spatial occupation, with SOR reaching up to 100 percent in several corridor segments. Concentrated activities result in high spatial pressure even at lower intensity levels, whereas dispersed activities lead to lower pressure despite higher activity counts. This interaction yields three distinct corridor typologies: high-pressure corridors, concentration-based hotspots, and transitional corridors. This study introduces a novel quantitative framework that operationalizes the relationship between informal economic activities and street space transformation by integrating IIAEI and SOR, enabling a measurable and comparative assessment of spatial pressure. The integration of IIAEI and SOR enables an objective, comparative assessment of spatial pressure. The results underscore the need to transition from control-oriented policies to integrative, data-driven approaches, thereby positioning urban street space as an adaptive and inclusive socio-economic environment.

Abstract

Background: Secondary cities play a strategic role within national spatial systems, but often face limitations in planning capacity and environmental carrying capacity. Pangkalpinang, the capital of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province, represents an archipelagic city undergoing a rapid transition from an agrarian to a service-oriented economy. Its dispersed physical expansion over the past two decades has become increasingly challenging to manage due to the absence of a comprehensive spatial diagnosis. Methods: This study aims to diagnose spatial order and urban morphological polarization using the Shannon Entropy method, based on proximity to the city center (H’p) and road networks (H’j) across seven districts in 2000, 2010, and 2024. Results: The results indicate significant increases in entropy in Bukit Intan (H’p 0.334–0.532) and Gerunggang (H’p 0.348–0.461), suggesting decentralization along road networks. An increase in entropy in this context reflects a decline in spatial order, where land-use patterns become more dispersed and fragmented, signaling reduced planning control and a greater need for targeted growth-management interventions. Implications: The findings demonstrate that Shannon Entropy functions not only as a quantitative tool but also as an analytical approach for interpreting spatial transformation in archipelagic urban environments. Moreover, this study offers initial evidence to support policy formulation for growth control and the protection of productive land in archipelagic secondary cities. Keywords: Pangkalpinang City; Secondary Cities; Shannon Entropy; Urban Morphology; Spatial Polarization  Latar Belakang: Kota sekunder memegang peran strategis dalam sistem kewilayahan nasional, namun sering menghadapi keterbatasan kapasitas perencanaan dan daya dukung lingkungan.

Abstract

Abstract: This research develops a Green Wall Ventilation Block made from recycled plastic and glass as an innovative sustainable façade solution for tropical architecture. The study aims to design a modular ventilation block capable of supporting natural airflow while providing planting space for green wall systems. The research method integrates digital modeling using SketchUp, airflow simulation through Autodesk Vasari, formulation of recycled composite material, and fabrication of a full-scale 1:1 prototype using a combined 3D printing and fiberglass mold. Simulation results confirm that the diagonal ventilation geometry improves airflow velocity and stability under tropical climatic conditions, while the planter cavity remains functional without obstructing ventilation. The recycled plastic–glass composite demonstrates good workability, reduced density, and sufficient durability for non-structural façade applications. The final prototype shows precise geometry, structural stability, and compatibility for modular installation as a green façade. Overall, the developed system not only enhances passive ventilation and thermal performance but also contributes to reducing plastic and glass waste by repurposing them into functional architectural components. This innovation offers strong potential for wider implementation in sustainable tropical building design.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the Building Information Modeling (BIM) competencies of vocational teachers and students at SMKN 1 Lubuk Pakam and to support the integration of BIM into vocational building design education. The program was implemented through demonstrations, hands-on training, and curriculum integration assistance. A total of 16 participants, consisting of teachers and students from the Building Modeling and Information Design program, took part in the activities. Data were collected using a BIM knowledge test, a perception questionnaire, a teacher readiness questionnaire, and a practical assessment rubric for BIM modeling skills. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, while changes in participants' BIM knowledge were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed that the mean BIM knowledge score increased from 17.62 on the pre-test to 19.88 on the post-test. This improvement was statistically significant (p = 0.039), with a moderate effect size (0.65). Participants' perceptions of BIM also improved, with the mean score increasing from 3.44 to 4.09 and the proportion of responses in the high category rising from 51.3% to 90.0%. Teachers' readiness to integrate BIM into classroom instruction increased substantially, with the mean score rising from 2.00 to 4.36 and the proportion of high-category responses increasing from 13.9% to 94.0%. In addition, participants successfully applied fundamental BIM workflows and produced simple digital building models. These findings indicate that the program effectively enhanced participants' BIM knowledge, practical competencies, and teachers' readiness to integrate BIM into vocational learning. Nevertheless, sustained mentoring and advanced training are recommended to support the development of more complex BIM competencies and long-term curriculum implementation.
