Abstract

Background: Children’s Nutritional Disorders (CND) are diseases that occur when childhood’s dietary intake doesn't contain the proper amount of nutrients for healthy functioning. In Indonesia, the prevalence of severely underweight is 1,4%, underweight is 6,7%, 1,1% were severely wasted and 4,3% of children were wasted. The prevalence of stunted has decreased from 27,7% in 2019 to 24,4% in 2020. However, this achievement is still far from the SDG’s targets. Objective: This study aims to determine the CND with a mapping geographical that can help the government to find the cause so the cases decrease faster. Methods: This study was descriptive with a cross-sectional design and conducted in Bukittinggi, West Sumatera, and used secondary data (Height and Weight Measurement Reports in 2020) from Public Health Office. To present the mapping geographical using QGIS 3.16 by taking the coordinate points of the Community Health Center in the Bukittinggi area. Results: Severely underweight, Guguk Panjang (7,55%) vs. Nilam Sari (0%). Underweight, Tigo Baleh (12,33%) vs Nilam Sari (1,55%). The risk of overweight, Tigo Baleh 23,33% vs. Gulai Bancah (4%). Severely stunted, Tigo Baleh (5,19%) vs. Gulai Bancah (3,60%), Nilam Sari (1,06%). Stunted, Guguk Panjang (15, 81%) vs. Gulai Bancah (14,75%). Severely wasted is very low in each Community health center (0,02% or 0,01%). Wasted, Tigo Baleh (0,91%) vs. Mandangin (0,08%). Overweight, Guguk Panjang (9,62%) vs. Gulai Bancah (6,12%).Conclusion: The risk of overweight is the most cases of CND in Bukittinggi, while severely wasted is the lowest case. The cases in 2020 increased associated with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Dietary patterns may contribute to diabetes burden, but evidence from Indonesian provincial populations remains limited. This study assessed associations between selected processed/instant food and beverage indicators and doctor-diagnosed diabetes mellitus (DM) in West Sumatera. We analysed 31,921 survey respondents from West Sumatera using complex-sample weights. DM was defined as self-reported doctor diagnosis. Exposures were ever vs never consumption of salty foods, grilled foods, preserved meat/fish with additives, carbonated soft drinks, and instant noodles. Multivariable survey logistic regression produced adjusted odds ratios (AORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The weighted prevalence of diagnosed DM was 1.4% (≈71,486 of 5,272,303). In adjusted models, respondents reporting ever consumption of preserved meat/fish (AOR = 0.64; 95% CI: 0.47–0.89), carbonated soft drinks (AOR = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.28–0.52), and instant noodles (AOR = 0.56; 95% CI: 0.40–0.78) had lower odds of doctor-diagnosed diabetes mellitus than those reporting never consumption. Salty foods (AOR = 0.97; 95% CI: 0.64–1.46) and grilled foods (AOR = 1.27; 95% CI: 0.88–1.82) were not significantly associated. These inverse associations should be interpreted cautiously because they are likely to reflect reverse causality, post-diagnosis dietary modification, and residual confounding rather than protective effects of these foods. The prevalence of doctor-diagnosed diabetes mellitus in West Sumatra was low. Although several processed-food indicators showed inverse associations with diagnosed diabetes mellitus, these findings should not be interpreted as evidence of protective effects. Instead, they are more likely explained by reverse causality, behavioral modification following diagnosis, underdiagnosis, and residual confounding. Prospective longitudinal studies are warranted to clarify the causal relationship between dietary behaviors and diabetes risk.

Abstract

WHO data in 2022 stated that anemia in adolescents aged 13-18 years was 23%, developing countries 53.7% in 2018. Based on the 2023 SKI, anemia in adolescents in Indonesia is quite high, which is 32% at the age of 15-24 years, which has an impact on adolescent health. The iron and vitamin content of dragon fruit affects the process of hemoglobin formation in red blood cells. This study aims to determine the effect of giving dragon fruit pudding on hemoglobin levels in anemic female adolescents. Quantitative research type, Pre-Experimental Design method, One-Group Pretest-Posttest Only Design. The infinite population of all anemic female adolescents in the Koto Lolo Health Center work area, Sungai Penuh City with a purposive sampling technique obtained 16 respondents in 2024. The instrument uses POCT (Easy Touch GCHb Brand) and observation sheets. Data is not normally distributed, using the Wilcoxon test. Univariate analysis obtained the average hemoglobin level before being given dragon fruit pudding was 9,81 + SD 0.832 and after being given dragon fruit pudding was 11,81 + SD 0.758. There was an increase of 2 gr/dl in Hb levels. The results of the bivariate analysis obtained a p value of 0.001 which means (p≤0.05). There is an effect of giving dragon fruit pudding on the hemoglobin levels of anemic adolescent girls in the Koto Lolo Health Center work area in 2024. It is hoped that giving dragon fruit pudding as one of the alternative companion therapy programs to increase Hb levels in anemic adolescent girls

Abstract

Background: The flash floods (galodo) that occurred in South Batipuh District and X Koto District, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, had significant impacts on public health, health service systems, access to clean water, as well as sanitation and environmental conditions. Damage to infrastructure, disruption of health service access, and environmental degradation increased the risk of infectious and environmentally related diseases and exacerbated pre-existing non-communicable diseases among affected populations. Purpose: This Community Service Program aimed to describe and analyze the implementation of the Siaga Sehat Mobile Kit, the installation of clean water and sanitation technologies, and the safety environment for recovery approach as post-disaster health recovery interventions. Method: A participatory descriptive approach was employed through mobile health services, installation of emergency clean water facilities, distribution of hygiene supplies, health education, and capacity building for community health centers (puskesmas) and local communities. The activities were conducted from 19 to 21 December 2025 in several affected villages (nagari), involving lecturers from Universitas Prima Nusantara Bukittinggi, primary health care personnel, volunteers, and local government authorities. Results: The results demonstrated improved access to basic health services for vulnerable groups, enhanced availability and quality of clean water, and strengthened partner capacity in post-disaster health and sanitation management. Conclusion: The program contributed to strengthening the resilience of the local health system and shows potential for replication in other disaster-prone areas.

Abstract

Background: The association between soft drink consumption and hypertension remains controversial, as many previous studies have not adequately controlled for potential confounding factors. Analyses incorporating complex survey designs are needed to provide more accurate estimates of this association. Objective: To examine the independent association between soft drink consumption and hypertension among adults in West Sumatra Province after adjusting for sociodemographic and health-related behavioral factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI), including 24,910 respondents aged ≥15 years in West Sumatra Province. Data were analyzed using a complex survey approach that accounted for sampling weights, stratification, and primary sampling units (PSUs). Associations were assessed using the design-based chi-square test, followed by complex logistic regression to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs). Results: The prevalence of physician-diagnosed hypertension was 7.1%. Bivariate analysis initially showed a significant inverse association between soft drink consumption and hypertension (p<0.001). However, after adjustment for age, sex, smoking status, and physical activity, the association was no longer statistically significant (aOR=1.155; 95% CI: 0.884–1.510; p=0.290). The strongest determinants of hypertension were older age (p<0.001), smoking (aOR=1.424; p=0.002), and insufficient vigorous physical activity (aOR=1.326; p=0.001). Conclusion: Soft drink consumption was not independently associated with hypertension among adults in West Sumatra. The significant association observed in the bivariate analysis reflected confounding, primarily due to the predominance of younger individuals among soft drink consumers

Abstract

Dengue fever in Indonesia is still classified as a serious disease because it has increased yearly from 2011 to 2013. This study aims to determine the difference in the effectiveness of various types of water in the queue as a trap for eggs of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in Bukittinggi. This type of research is experimental. The test used is the Anova test because the data is not normal using the Mann-Whitney test. The research sample used a sampling technique. This study uses primary data which can be seen from the number of trapped Aedes Aegypti mosquito eggs. The results showed that between the straw bales using well water and mineral water, the p-value was (0.421)> ɑ (0.05), meaning that there was no difference between the straw-soaked line with well water and water mineral. Meanwhile, after a statistical test was carried out between the straw bales using mineral water and rainwater, the p-value was (0.008)> ɑ (0.05), (Ho was rejected, Ha was accepted), meaning that there was a difference between the straw-soaked anthers and mineral water and rainwater. Based on the results of various types of attractants on the number of Aedes aegypti mosquito eggs trapped in the applied science laboratory of the University of Fort De Kock, Bukittinggi, the straw-soaked extract with rainwater is more effective because it produces more eggs than the extract soaked in straw with well water and extract soaked in straw with mineral water.

Abstract

Anemia remains a significant public health problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia, with low adherence to weekly iron-folic acid supplementation (IFAS) programs. Innovative educational strategies are needed to improve both knowledge and adherence to supplementation. This study aimed to examine the effect of CEMARA animated flipbook education on knowledge and weekly iron supplement adherence among anemic adolescent girls. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was used. The study involved 68 ninth-grade anemic girls from SMPN 03 Bukittinggi, Indonesia. Consecutive sampling was applied to recruit participants. The intervention consisted of the CEMARA animated flipbook, which was delivered over one month. During this period, the girls also received weekly monitoring of their iron tablet intake. Knowledge and adherence were measured using structured questionnaires, both of which had acceptable reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.812 for knowledge and 0.803 for adherence). Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman's rank correlation test. The mean knowledge score increased from 12.90 ± 2.306 to 19.13 ± 1.683 (p < 0.001). The mean adherence score increased from 3.56 ± 1.028 to 5.84 ± 1.016 (p < 0.001). However, the correlation between knowledge improvement and adherence was weak and not statistically significant (r = 0.171; p = 0.162). CEMARA animated flipbook education significantly improved knowledge and weekly iron supplement adherence among anemic adolescent girls. However, increased knowledge was not significantly associated with adherence, indicating that behavioral and contextual factors may also influence supplementation practices.
