Abstract

Language choices are often used to reveal and reflect writers’ perspectives on certain issues, particularly constructed in online news media. Such language choices can affect readers’ stance in evaluating the issues being raised, leading to framing the news. This study aims to reveal the framing of Indonesia’s political dynasty during Indonesia’s regional election in 2024 in online Korean News. This study applied Pan and Kosicki’s framing analysis method to uncover the news construction in three Korean news: Seoul Economic Daily, Kyunghyang Shinmun, and Yonhap News, through syntactical, script, thematic, and rhetorical structures. The analysis results show that the syntactical structures on three news highlights 대규모 시위 (large-scale demonstration) as the main cause of the cancellation of the candidacy. Meanwhile, the script structures are structurally complete, holding all the 5W+1H elements. On the thematic structure, the three Korean news reports surrounded the same issue, the change of regional election law, also using the same pronouns: 장남 (first son) and 차남 (second son) to refer to the main figure being discussed. Lastly, the three news articles have distinctive styles in their rhetorical structures while delivering the information, but still attempt to shape audiences’ opinions through diction, character quotations, and narratives about the integrity or ambition of power. Based on these findings, this study recommends further research by applying a critical discourse analysis approach to unpack the interplay between language use and power relations, concerning with critical issues discussed in online news.

Abstract

This study adopts a Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) approach grounded in Halliday’s theoretical framework to investigate Theme-Rheme structures in the Integrated Korean Language textbooks . This research is significant as prior studies on Korean language textbooks have largely overlooked the interplay between thematic structure and ideological representation, leaving a gap in understanding how discourse patterns contribute to implicit cultural messaging. The primary objective is to examine the deployment of marked and unmarked themes as well as the patterns of thematic progression within narrative and descriptive texts. The data are drawn from Volumes 3 and 4 of the textbooks, which encompass cultural, object-related, and activity-based themes. The findings indicate that the majority of clauses adhere to the Simple Linear Thematic Progression pattern, wherein the rheme of one clause becomes the theme of the subsequent clause, thereby contributing to a cohesive and logically sequenced discourse. In certain instances, Complex Linear Progression patterns were also observed, offering extended elaboration of central ideas. Material and relational processes are predominantly employed to represent actions and identity relationships, illustrating how lexical choices such as verbs and conjunctions function to structure the narrative. Furthermore, the analysis reveals the implicit integration of feminist ideology gender roles within the texts, particularly concerning evolving gender roles in contemporary Korean households. The thematic patterns identified reflect broader social values and ideological transformations embedded in the educational material, conveying underlying messages that promote gender equality and advocate for more equitable social roles. The thematic patterns identified in the texts function not only to organize information but also to foreground specific social actors and actions that align with feminist ideology. By consistently thematizing female subjects, progressive roles, or relational identities, the texts reflect and reinforce broader social values of gender equality and contribute to the ideological transformation toward more equitable gender norms.

Abstract

This research employs Pan and Kosicki's framing model to examine the depiction of SEVENTEEN's address at the 2023 UNESCO Youth Forum by Korean online media. The study analyzed three leading media sources: The Chosun Daily, Hankyoreh, and The Kyunghyang Shinmun, each showcasing distinct ideological perspectives. This research employs qualitative methods to explore how these outlets intentionally utilize syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical framing components to construct the conveyed message. The results indicate that The Chosun Daily prioritizes national pride and unity, Hankyoreh emphasizes humanitarian and educational themes, while The Kyunghyang Shinmun showcases youth empowerment and solidarity. Although they have differing ideologies, the three media organizations advocate for common principles, such as the significance of education, international collaboration, and leadership among young people. This research highlights the significant influence of framing on the public's views of global occurrences and personalities, particularly within the realm of public diplomacy via K-pop. Furthermore, it aids in the progression of media studies by offering perspectives on how cultural symbols shape stories of optimism, collaboration, and citizenship. Future comparative research is suggested to examine cross-cultural framing methods in digital journalism.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Korean for Specific Purposes, Multimodal Analysis, Visual–Verbal Relations

Abstract

This research explored how cultural elements and values are represented in Korean storybooks for Korean language learners. The objectives of this study are to: 1. Identify Korean and non-Korean cultural elements depicted in Korean language storybooks for Korean language learners; 2. Identify Korean and non-Korean cultural values depicted in Korean language storybooks for Korean language learners. The analysis was conducted using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Based on the analysis results, 62 cultural elements and 50 cultural values were found for Korean culture. Meanwhile, for non-Korean culture, 35 cultural elements and 51 cultural values were found. The first finding related to Korean culture was its cultural elements, namely 6 cultural categories, including: monuments; groups of buildings; sites; social practices, rituals, and celebrations; knowledge and practices about nature and the universe; and traditional craftsmanship. Related to cultural values, 5 categories were found, including: time; human relations with nature; human relations with each other; behavioral motives; and human nature. The first findings related to non-Korean culture were cultural elements, namely 5 cultural categories, including: monuments; groups of buildings; sites; knowledge and practices about nature and the universe; and traditional craftsmanship. Regarding cultural values, five categories were identified as the same category found in Korean culture. Based on these findings, it can be seen that despite the author being a foreigner and not a native Korean speaker, Korean culture is still prominently featured in the book Short Stories in Korean for Intermediate Learners. The novelty in this study compared to previous studies are: 1. There is a combination of cultural elements and cultural values that create a more in-depth analysis; 2. The use of storybooks with authors who are not native speakers; 3. There is an analysis of elements that are explained more specifically.

Abstract

The advantages of incorporating technology-enhanced flipped learning in English classrooms are nothing new. However, the impact of incorporating the learning method on the occurrence and decline of students’ characters has not much been revealed. This study aims to fill the void by exploring the students’ perceptions of whether flipped learning and the use of technology in learning English can instill character education. Eighty-four (n=84) Indonesian undergraduate EFL students participated in this study. A 22-item questionnaire with a checklist and open-ended types was filled out after the students completed a 16-week course. While percentages were obtained from the checklist responses, codes and categories were generated from the open-ended responses. The results revealed that flipped learning could instill character values of responsibility, independence, and curiosity. The in-class group discussion was considered as the most contributing activity to the instillment of character values. Character values of religiosity, patriotism, and nationalism were less occurred among the students. Furthermore, the use of ICT-based learning media such as YouTube, WhatsApp, the Internet, and mobile phone could instill character values of independence, creativity, teamwork, activeness, and criticality. However, few students perceived that such learning media could influence them to commit cheating or become less concentrated during group discussion. This study emphasizes the teacher’s roles in designing learning activities oriented to developing the students’ English language skills and character.

Abstract

This research analyzes Korean fashion terminology in fashion-themed YouTube channels. It aims to classify, identify the word-formation processes, and explain the semantic functions of fashion terms used in Korean. Using qualitative descriptive methods, data were collected from various YouTube videos focusing on Korean fashion. The analysis was conducted using morphological theories by Go & Goo and semantic analysis by Leech. A total of 246 terms were identified and classified based on categories from the Fashionpedia book, including Apparel, Detail, Accessories, Textile, Manufacturing, Body & Beauty, and Measurement & Care. The results show that most terms originate from foreign words (외래어), Chinese loanwords (한자어), and native Korean (고유어), with the Manufacturing category dominating the dataset. The word formation processes include single words, compounds, derivation, and borrowing. This study reveals the linguistic diversity and cultural adaptation reflected in Korean fashion terminology and emphasizes the importance of understanding these terms in both industry and daily contexts.
