Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to investigate culture representation through visual images in a Korean as a foreign language textbook for Indonesian students. It specifically exhibits how cultures are represented through visual images and how they are implicated to KFL learning. Culture and language are closely related, and understanding the cultural values underlying the target language can greatly affect the effectiveness of the learning process. Even though this topic has been the subject of substantial prior research, many have not been explored in the context of Korean textbooks as learning foreign languages. The method used in this study was qualitative using a multimodal discourse analysis. The data were analyzed using the image representation mode of Kress van Leeuwen (KvL). The data were collected from visual images showing cultural identities such as gender roles and ideology, contained in each chapter of the Korea Foundation Level 1 textbook, focused on the speaking (Malhagi) and cultural sections. The results of the data analysis show that cultural representation is dominated by Korean culture in both animated and non-animated images. However, the social role of people's lives represented in the picture corresponds to Indonesia and some pictures are found to be relevant to Indonesia, as the religion of the majority of Indonesians is depicted in the book. Almost all images are illustrated with animated visuals. Male gender is more heavily highlighted than female gender, rendering gender bias. This is related to the Confucian principles that exist in South Korea. Apart from the ulterior motives, the existence of Korean language learning textbooks for Indonesians provides benefits as a multimodal learning medium and helps teachers and students as a support medium for teaching and learning purposes. Keywords: Visual Language, Representation Mode, Multimodal Discourse, Culture

Abstract

The ubiquitous presence of mobile devices has benefited the implementation of foreign language learning through Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL). Previous research highlights the portability aspect of mobile devices such as smartphones that can lead to spontaneous, flexible, and personalized learning activities. However, challenges remain; particularly the connectivity issues. The present study seeks to continue the discussion by investigating 79 Indonesian undergraduate students’ experiences and perceptions of MALL in their Korean language classes. The data were obtained by distributing a questionnaire to the students. The validity and reliability coefficients were also measured. Interview sessions were conducted afterward with eleven students to dig for further explanations. The results demonstrate that most students used smartphones for sending messages to peers, checking notifications, accessing materials, submitting their work, and sending messages to lecturers. Regarding the applications used, they frequently utilized smartphones for accessing Google Classroom, Zoom, and WhatsApp during their Korean classes. The results also revealed that while they perceived MALL as useful and flexible for learning Korean toward increased language skills, motivation, autonomy, and critical thinking, technical problems, and connectivity issues remain to be the main challenges. This study discusses some concerns in implementing MALL and its implications for future research.

Abstract

Although previous research has demonstrated the significance of blended learning in foreign language learning, little attention is devoted to examining the influence of blended learning on students’ basic Korean learning process. This research aims to investigate the students’ perceptions of blended learning model in learning basic Korean. A quantitative and qualitative research method was employed by collecting data from questionnaires and interviews. This research involved 20 students in a Donasi Sambil Belajar (DOSILA) program. The DOSILA program was included as a learning program that used a blended learning model with a composition of 30% of e-learning and 70% of face-to-face learning. In addition, students’ perceptions of the blended learning model were examined. The results revealed that the application of blended learning as a new learning model could improve students’ learning independence properly. The students also informed that blended learning model assisted them to learn basic Korean easily with satisfaction. However, they encountered some obstacles such as forgotten schedules and poor internet connection. The results of this research can be a reference for future research to formulate more rigorous teaching framework.

Abstract

Along with the increasing interest in learning the Korean language and culture, textbooks have become important agents in disseminating culture. The cultural value in textbooks plays a crucial role in enhancing learners' cultural awareness. However, there has been limited research specifically examining cultural content in Korean language textbooks for foreigners. Therefore, this study aims to determine the representation of the culture that emerges in the Buku teks Bahasa Korea Terpadu untuk Orang Indonesia at basic and intermediate levels using the categorization of cultural contents from Cortazzi and Jin. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive method by comprehensively analyzing all aspects included, such as vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, writing, pronunciation, and culture. The findings indicate an uneven distribution of cultural categories. The target culture category dominates with almost three-quarters of the total content, while the source culture category is less represented. The implication is that this study emphasizes the urgency of developing balanced textbooks to enhance equitable cultural awareness among Korean language learners.

Abstract

This research examines the fairy tale 진짜 진짜 얼굴을 찾아서 (Finding The Real Face) which is found in the Korean drama "It's Okay to Not Be Okay". This research analyzes the actant schema and functional structure from A.J.'s structural narrative theory. Greimas, after that, identified the representation of existentialism in it. The method used is qualitative with narrative semiotic analysis presented descriptively. The results of this research show that the fairy tale 진짜 진짜 얼굴을 찾아서 (Finding The Real Face) fulfills the six actants in varying amounts. The dominant actant of this tale is the Box Man, namely as subject, helper and recipient. The functional structure of a fairy tale has a sequential plot. Apart from that, this fairy tale reflects the search for identity of the characters, namely the Box Man, the Mask Child, and the Tin Can Princess.
