Abstract

This study aims to analyze illocutionary act used by the main characters, Travis Shaw, in a movie entitled The Choice. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe the types of illocutionary acts; (2) to find out the most dominant illocutionary acts; (3) to explain the implication of the dominance used by Travis in The Choice movie. The study uses the descriptive qualitative method to describe and analyze the selected of the illocutionary acts connect to the current context which is found in the utterances uttered by the main character, Travis, in The Choice movie. In this research, the writer finds that Travis Shaw uses all types of illoctionary act : Representatives are (36, 14%), Directives are (32, 53%), Commissives are (12, 04%), Expressives are (18, 07%), Declaratives are (1, 20%). This study reveals that the most dominant type used by Travis Shaw in his utterance of illocutionary acts of representative more often than other acts. It implies stating, describing, affirming, boasting, acknowledging, telling, reporting, speculating, claiming, boasting, mentioning, asserting and etc, in his utterances.

Abstract

Kajian ini berfokus pada jenis-jenis frase nomina dalam bahasa Batak Toba. Sumber datanya adalah khotbah yang disampaikan dalam bahasa Batak Toba. Penelitian kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Studi ini menerapkan X-bar dalam menganalisis jenis frase nomina. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah bahasa Batak Toba memiliki tiga jenis frase nomina yaitu nomina+tambahan, penentu+nomina, dan nomina. Studi ini menemukan tipe yang mematahkan teori X-bar. Hasil analisis menunjukkan tipe TN di Batak Toba sebagian besar mirip dengan Mulyadi (1996) dalam dua tipe; kata benda + tambahan dan specifier + kata benda. Jenis frase nomina baru dalam bahasa Batak Toba adalah nomina yang berdiri sendiri tanpa komponen tambahan. Poin utama dari frase nomina adalah nomina sebagai kepala. Artinya, tidak ada masalah dalam mengklasifikasikan kata benda ke frase kata benda.

Abstract

This research aims the delusion within Alfred, the main character in Ruta Sepetys’ Salt to the Sea. The delusion within the main character has great impact toward the novel. Ritunanno and Bortolotti’s (2021) theory of delusion is meant to analyze the delusion within the main character.  This method is adequate for analyzing the delusion within the main character in Salt to the Sea novel. This research uses qualitative method. The data will be taken from dialogues between the main character with other characters and the author’s narrations. The delusion within the main characters is collected by identifying and classifying the dialogues into the beginning, the process, and the result of the delusion within the main character. The delusion is portrayed by Alfred which leads to the tragic impacts. The beginning of the delusion occurs in Alfred’s environments that depicts how his parents and friends treat him in certain ways he does not want to. While, the process of the delusion occurs when he’s on duty during the war. It is interpreted how he goes through such underestimation toward colleagues and strangers being rude to him. Eventually, the impacts make some significant changes toward Alfred’s character. The positive impacts are the remembrance of his mother and the details of the ship. And the negative impacts are the neglect on other people and his death. All in all, this research shows the worst that the delusion could create to Alfred is his death.

Abstract

Community service (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat) is training and educating the public to improve the quality of people. Community service is a training process to give information, training and mentoring. This paper entitled “Praktik Bahasa Inggris dalam Pemasaran Produk UMKM di Desa Lumban Pea Timur, Kecamatan Balige Kabupaten Toba.” Conducted on 8-11 June 2022. This objective of community service is to exercise the society in speaking English, to increase their economy. This community service using discussion, sharing ideas and practice.

Abstract

The epic poem "Beowulf" has the characteristics of this type of poem, including adventure and heroic stories, mythological and fantastic elements, and the conveyance of moral and ethical values in the form of teachings or advice from the characters in it. The poem also has a distinctive style of language and introduces a number of terms and events that are part of the Anglo-Saxon cultural and literary heritage. However, Beowulf's poem does not yet have a word structure that gives a message and impression that expresses thoughts and creativity that can be read by the message that reads the poem, where the poem does not give words that inspire readers to use them at various events and events because it does not have a word structure and function that makes people interested in reading it, Because there are still readers who do not understand and explain well, because it includes old poems that have never been used in various performances and events. The purpose of this study is to understand how the use of words and their morphological forms affects the reader's understanding and experience in appreciating the value of art and the story contained in this literary work. The method used in this study was morphological analysis of the text of Beowulf's poem. The text data will be analyzed in depth to identify the morphological structure of the words used in the poem. The use of frequently used words, unique morphological forms, and striking morphological variations will be identified and analyzed in the context of Old English poetry. The data collection method is carried out by making observations and literature studies (documentation studies). The results of the study can be concluded that the word structure and word form in the Old English poem Beowulf is not fully understood well by readers and poets because the word structure in the form of stanzas, alliteration and the use of words that are not understood by the reader which does not make him arouse himself to read the literary work. In addition, the function of the word da in each stanza of Beowulf's poem still does not make the reader's emotions and feelings aroused to use this literary work, does not give the impression because it does not provide messages and ideas that touch the reader, and does not provide meaning that can make the reader interested in using this literary work. Keywords: Morfology Analysis, Old English Poetry, Structure of Words and Functions of Words.

Abstract

Ray Stevenson's children's poems are one of those poems that have a style and message suitable for children, and many of them are found in children's poetry collections and children's literature books. These poems demonstrate Stevenson's talent for creating works that appeal to young readers. However, although known as a poet, Robert Louis Stevenson's poetry work is not easy to understand and digest by readers, which is because the acquisition of language and words used does not provide a complete understanding of the theme to be described properly, so children do not like the poem presented, where this is due to the acquisition of language and words used do not provide a complete understanding of the theme to be described properly, so that children do not like the poem presented, so that the poem by Robert Louis Stevenson does not get a good response from readers because the meaning presented is not so familiar, so that among children the work of Robert Louis Stevenson gets less attention. The purpose of this study is to understand how children's poetry influences and facilitates the process of language learning in children, as well as how language style and poetry structure help the development of their language skills. This study used a qualitative analysis approach, by collecting children's poems written by Robert Louis Stevenson as research data. The data will be analyzed in depth to identify language styles, poetry structures, and other language elements that influence the process of language acquisition in children. The data collection method is carried out using documentation and observation studies. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that Robert Stevenson's poems still cannot attract sympathy and attention for children, where the verses in the poem, the structure of the poem provided, and the complicated language style for children to digest, so that children do not understand the meaning of the poem, resulting in a decrease in children's interest and enthusiasm in using the poem at certain events or certain events.
