Abstract

The research aimed to explore the problems and the solutions in translating proverbs in the SL into the TL. This research applied a qualitative research and supported by cultural and translation analyses. The data were collected from the dialogues of Ngapul and Yerti in the film of “Mate ras Mate”. The Karonese proverbs in the MRM film texts were the source language (SL). The researchers translated the SL and found out their equivalents in the target language (TL) in English. The data for this research were gathered from its film text. After collecting the proverbs in film, the researchers identified and translated them into English. The researchers applied the translation procedures of cultural equivalent, paraphrase, descriptive equivalent, and literal translation method to translate the proverbs in the SL into the TL. The result shows that many Karonese proverbs and cultural terms in the SL have no equivalent in the TL.

Abstract

Abstract

Kajian ini berfokus pada jenis-jenis frase nomina dalam bahasa Batak Toba. Sumber datanya adalah khotbah yang disampaikan dalam bahasa Batak Toba. Penelitian kualitatif digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Studi ini menerapkan X-bar dalam menganalisis jenis frase nomina. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah bahasa Batak Toba memiliki tiga jenis frase nomina yaitu nomina+tambahan, penentu+nomina, dan nomina. Studi ini menemukan tipe yang mematahkan teori X-bar. Hasil analisis menunjukkan tipe TN di Batak Toba sebagian besar mirip dengan Mulyadi (1996) dalam dua tipe; kata benda + tambahan dan specifier + kata benda. Jenis frase nomina baru dalam bahasa Batak Toba adalah nomina yang berdiri sendiri tanpa komponen tambahan. Poin utama dari frase nomina adalah nomina sebagai kepala. Artinya, tidak ada masalah dalam mengklasifikasikan kata benda ke frase kata benda.

Abstract

This study explores the interjection of He Soaya le…! in Nias language using a descriptive qualitative method. Words that denote reactions or spontaneous expressions are interjections. The Nias language has an interjection that is similar to the exclamation of oh my God, namely He Soaya le...! Where this interjection is one of the quite iconic interjections in the daily conversation of the Nias people.  This research aims to know the meaning of the Interjection He Soaya le...! . In this paper, researchers identify Nias interjections in the Nias language using the Natural Semantic Metafunction approach. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method, namely research that uses written and oral data sources. The data is taken from a dialogue in the comedy-drama series entitled Abunawa. Distribution and contextual methods are the methods used in this study to obtain data. From the results obtained in this study, there is one meaning of the interjection He Soaya le...! Namely shock, fear and panic, and emotional expressions that can be formed through physiological changes in humans. In Nias language, it is also expressed in two semantic aspects of its metafunction, namely emotive and cognitive aspects. From the results of this research, it is hoped that it can become a source of knowledge and understanding for other people of different ethnicities from the people of Nias and can avoid misunderstandings about a language.

Abstract

Community service (Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat) is training and educating the public to improve the quality of people. Community service is a training process to give information, training and mentoring. This paper entitled “Praktik Bahasa Inggris dalam Pemasaran Produk UMKM di Desa Lumban Pea Timur, Kecamatan Balige Kabupaten Toba.” Conducted on 8-11 June 2022. This objective of community service is to exercise the society in speaking English, to increase their economy. This community service using discussion, sharing ideas and practice.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the maintenance of the Karo language in Tiga Juhar. This study uses qualitative research, especially case studies. The subjects studied were 2 people; 1 is Christian and 1 is Muslim. Subjects were chosen specifically because they had to meet the criteria for having children, being able to speak their own tribal language fluently. Data were obtained by using interviews and observation. The data analysis technique used the Miles and Huberman method, namely data reduction, data classification, verification, and conclusion. In data analysis, it was found that a. Four factors that influence language defense are attitude, values and identity factors, social factors, religious factors, and demographic factors. b. There are two ways to maintain the language, namely creating an environment that integrates the use of regional languages and the continuous use of regional languages.

Abstract

This study aims to describe errors at the syntactic level which include aspects of phrases and sentences in writing personal experiences. This study used a qualitative research design with a descriptive research type. The results of this study indicate that students make many mistakes in sentence structure which includes ten aspects. These findings prove that students pay little attention to the use of grammar in writing, the lack of vocabulary that students have, the influence of the use of regional languages, and the teacher pays little attention to the use of grammar in writing. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Based on the results of the research, the researchers found data on language errors in the syntactical aspect, including: 8 errors in the word aspect, 1 error in the phrase aspect, and 34 errors in the sentence aspect. From the findings of these data researchers chose 3 data to be analyzed. These data are: 1 word aspect error, 1 phrase aspect error, and 1 sentence aspect error. Abstract

The aim of this research is to describe that many studies have employed politeness techniques as their main focus since Brown and Levinson first proposed it in 1987. Some of these are considered to be a formal class within an academic subject. Politeness tooimprove learning by creating a dynamic atmosphere and pleasanttinteraction between teachersaand students during the teaching and learninggprocess. Additionally, because of the relaxed atmosphere and positive interactions present, it helps inspire students to learn. The purposeoof this paper is to examine how politeness strategiesiareiusediby students and teacher during interactions in EFL classrooms. It is based on the fouritypes of politeness strategiesiproposed by Brownand Levinson (1987): bald-on-record, off-record, positive-politeness, and negative-politeness. The method employed is qualitative descriptive with literature study methodology. Abstract

The goal of this study is to analyze the lexical and contextual significance of Fajar Sadboy's quotes. Researchers employed qualitative methods to carry out this study. Fajar Sadboy's utterances, obtained from web pages, served as the research's data source. Fajar Sadboy's quotes, which have lexical and contextual interpretations, serve as the study's primary source of data. This study used observation, lexical analysis, and contextual interpretation to collect the data. Fajar Sadboy's quotes were found online and recorded after being found, as well as their lexical and contextual meanings. The data is then examined using the meaning study. There are lexical meanings and contextual meanings based on the analysis of the quotes from Fajar Sadboy that was done for the research. Lexical meanings are dictionary translations of Indonesian and English words. The situation described in the quotes from Fajar Sadboy serves as the contextual meanings.
