Abstract

The increasing volume of household waste has occurred in parallel with population growth and rising household activities. Limited public knowledge regarding household waste management has resulted in waste being disposed of without further processing, leading to environmental pollution. At the same time, the intensive use of chemical fertilizers has contributed to declining soil fertility and increased production costs for smallholder farmers due to rising prices of non-subsidized fertilizers. This community service program aimed to empower the Sumber Tani Farmer Group in Arjasa Village, Jember Regency, through training on the production of eco-enzymes from household organic waste as a strategy to improve soil fertility and enhance farm cost efficiency. The program was implemented using a participatory approach (learning by doing), consisting of three main stages: preparation and coordination, implementation (counseling, demonstrations, and hands-on practice), and evaluation. Conducted from August to October 2025, the activity involved 30 members of the farmer group. The results demonstrated an increase in participants’ knowledge and skills in processing organic waste into eco-enzymes and applying them to agricultural land. Overall, the program successfully promoted farmer self-reliance in the provision of liquid organic fertilizers, reduced dependence on chemical inputs, and supported the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural systems.ABSTRAKPeningkatan volume limbah rumah tangga terjadi seiring peningkatan populasi dan aktivitas rumah tangga.

Abstract

A major constraint in edamame (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) cultivation is the rapid deterioration of seed viability, which limits crop productivity. Seed priming has been widely applied to improve the physiological quality of seeds by activating early metabolic processes prior to germination. This study aimed to determine the most effective seed priming treatment using Trichoderma harzianum and rice husk ash as matriconditioning media to stimulate edamame seed germination and vigor. The research was conducted from July to September 2025 at the Seed Technology Laboratory, Jember State Polytechnic, using a completely randomized design (CRD) with seven treatments: control (M1), matriconditioning with rice husk ash plus water for 6 hours (M2), matriconditioning with rice husk ash plus Trichoderma sp. isolate for 6 hours (M3), matriconditioning with rice husk ash plus Trichoderma sp. isolate for 12 hours (M4), matriconditioning with rice husk ash plus Trichoderma sp. isolate for 18 hours (M5), and matriconditioning with rice husk ash plus Trichoderma sp. isolate for 24 hours (M6). Observed parameters included germination percentage (GP), maximum germination potential (MGP), vigor index (VI), seedling uniformity, seedling biomass, and shoot and root length. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at a 5% significance level. The results suggested that T. harzianum seed treatments have not yet shown a significant effect on enhancing edamame seed viability, as indicated by the parameters of Germination Percentage, Maximum Germination Potential, and Vigor Index. These findings imply that further optimization of priming duration and inoculum concentration may be necessary to achieve more consistent improvements in germination performance and seed vigor.

Abstract

Fruit fly infestation (Bactrocera spp.) represents one of the major constraints in melon production, leading to significant reductions in both yield quality and quantity. The continued reliance on chemical insecticides for pest control poses adverse environmental impacts. This community service activity aimed to enhance farmers’ awareness and technical skills in utilizing lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) as a botanical pesticide, as well as the application of methyl eugenol as an attractant for fruit fly control in melon fields. The program was conducted in May 2025 at the Maju Tresno II Farmer Group, Wuluhan District, Jember Regency. The activity employed a combination of lecture, demonstration, discussion, and evaluation methods. The results indicated a substantial increase in farmers’ knowledge, particularly in the use of lemongrass as a botanical pesticide (60%) and the application of pheromone traps (87%), with an average knowledge improvement of approximately 43%. Farmers actively participated in the program and showed strong interest in adopting the introduced technologies. This extension approach can serve as an effective, economical, and environmentally friendly alternative for pest management.
