Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has transformed maritime education, creating new opportunities and challenges for Maritime English learning. As English serves as the primary language of international maritime communication, maritime cadets are expected to develop not only general English proficiency but also specialized communicative competence required for shipboard operations. This study aimed to explore the challenges experienced by maritime cadets in learning Maritime English within the technological era. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, the study was conducted at Politeknik Pelayaran Malahayati Aceh, Indonesia. Twenty-four cadets enrolled in the Marine Electrical Officer program participated in semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed thematically to identify recurring patterns and perceptions related to technology-mediated Maritime English learning. The findings revealed that cadets experienced both benefits and challenges associated with technology-enhanced learning. Digital tools such as mobile applications, learning management systems, and maritime simulators increased learning flexibility, authenticity, and learner autonomy. However, participants reported significant challenges related to vocabulary retention, listening comprehension, Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) recall, pronunciation practice, and communication under time pressure. These linguistic difficulties were frequently exacerbated by technical and infrastructural barriers, including limited access to digital devices, unstable internet connectivity, software malfunctions, and insufficient digital literacy. Furthermore, technological challenges contributed to psychological consequences such as anxiety, frustration, reduced self-confidence, and decreased motivation. To overcome these obstacles, cadets relied heavily on peer support, low-technology learning strategies, and repeated practice. Participants also emphasized the importance of improved institutional support, including digital literacy training, enhanced technological infrastructure, accessible learning platforms, and continuous instructor guidance. The study concludes that while technology offers considerable pedagogical benefits for Maritime English education, its effectiveness is strongly influenced by digital access, technological competence, and institutional support. Therefore, successful implementation of technology-mediated Maritime English learning requires a balanced approach that integrates technological innovation with inclusive educational practices and learner-centered support systems.

Abstract

Students’ limited interest in reading English texts is often associated with low levels of reading comprehension. This study aimed to improve students’ reading comprehension through the implementation of the Index Card Match strategy in an English classroom. The research adopted a classroom action research design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, consisting of two cycles, each comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through observation sheets, field notes, interviews, reading comprehension tests, and student questionnaires. The quantitative findings demonstrated a progressive improvement in students’ reading comprehension across the research cycles. The proportion of students meeting the predetermined achievement criteria increased from 44% in the pre-test to 70% in Cycle I and further to 91% in Cycle II. Qualitative data supported these results, indicating increased student engagement, enjoyment, and motivation during reading activities. The findings suggest that the Index Card Match strategy is effective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension and creating a more interactive learning environment. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers consider integrating this strategy into reading instruction, while future studies may explore its application in different educational contexts or through alternative research designs. Abstract

Effective communication is a fundamental requirement in maritime operations, where clarity and accuracy are essential to ensuring safety at sea. One key element supporting this objective is the Maritime Alphabet, also known as the NATO phonetic alphabet, which standardizes oral communication among seafarers from diverse linguistic backgrounds. This literature review examines the role of the Maritime Alphabet in English language learning within maritime education contexts. The review analyzes 20 selected sources, including peer-reviewed journal articles, International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions and guidelines, and Maritime English textbooks published between 2015 and 2024, drawing on pedagogical frameworks in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and Maritime English. The findings indicate that integrating the Maritime Alphabet into Maritime English instruction enhances pronunciation accuracy, listening comprehension, and learners’ confidence in oral communication. Furthermore, its integration with the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) supports the development of professional communicative competence required by international maritime standards. The literature also highlights that simulation-based, task-oriented, and blended learning approaches significantly improve cadets’ engagement and practical communication performance. Despite these benefits, challenges remain, including persistent pronunciation difficulties among non-native speakers, limited exposure to authentic communication contexts, and insufficient instructional resources. Overall, this review underscores the Maritime Alphabet as a core component of Maritime English pedagogy, contributing to the development of standardized communicative competence essential for safety and professionalism in maritime education. Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of the Maritime Alphabet by students of Politeknik Pelayaran Malahayati, focusing on their level of understanding, accuracy, consistency, and the challenges faced in maritime communication. This research employed a descriptive method with a mixed methods approach. The subjects of the study were 48 fourth-semester students of the Ship Electrical Engineering Study Program. Data were collected through written and oral tests, observation, and questionnaires. The results showed that the students’ ability in using the Maritime Alphabet was in the “good” category, with an average score of 76.8%. Most students (41.7%) were categorized as good, followed by very good (25%), fair (20.8%), and poor (12.5%). Based on the assessment aspects, pronunciation (72%), accuracy (78%), and fluency (70%) were also categorized as good, although pronunciation was the lowest aspect. The errors identified included mispronunciation, incorrect use of code words, lack of fluency, and the influence of the mother tongue. The questionnaire results indicated that students were aware of the importance of the Maritime Alphabet; however, they still experienced difficulties in pronunciation and lacked confidence. Therefore, practice-based learning such as simulation, role play, and pronunciation drills is needed to improve students’ maritime communication competence.
